Dear parents and students:
Summer vacation is a great time to enjoy and relax… why not fit in some fun
Spanish?! Spanish skills can deteriorate rapidly from lack of use and exposure, so
here is an easy assignment for your son to complete before September. This
assignment is collected on the first week and is worth 100 points.
1) Watch 5 movies in Spanish (could be an American movie that’s dubbed)
and write down 2 interesting or idiomatic phrases/ expressions from each
movie in SPANISH with the English equivalent. Have a parent sign and
check off that you watched the movie IN SPANISH and what type of
subtitles you used (Spanish, English or both)
2) OR you may substitute 2 episodes of a Spanish language television show for
a movie. You still must watch 2 movies minimum. Again, have a parent
sign and check off that you watched the show(s).
HOW TO WATCH (Parents may want to watch, too!)
1) Find a movie or show your parents say is ok to watch, whether online or at
the grocery store (Redbox). Check “details” or the root menu/ set up menu
of the DVD or player in order to check that it is possible to switch the
language (if movie is in English) and add captions.
2) Enjoy your movie or show, but make sure you pause a couple times to jot
down a phrase you really like (in Spanish) from the movie.
3) Fill in the sheet with Title, date watched, phrases in Spanish and English,
and get a parent to sign your assignment.
Check out: Univision.com for television programs (careful with content since
news shows and soap operas/ regular tv shows will feature stronger content than
the typical American news or television program)
Check out: Hulu, Amazon Prime, Netflix and Redbox (NOTE: many American new
releases will feature the choice to listen to the movie dubbed along with subtitles.
A movie you watch with your family in English could then be watched in Spanish.)
