This upbeat song, helps to get everyone in the mood to SING, SING, SING! If the group is
not too large, sing to everyone individually. You can also do two or three names at a time.
Encourage the children to wave hello…even make up a silly new way to wave hello (behind their
head, with their feet, like a chicken, with their toes…).

Action Song
Children like to MOVE! This song is wonderful for motor and counting skills. We made it into a
“freeze dance” song. Counting out the rests or “stop” parts are every child’s favorites. Follow
the direction of the song and move, move, move and sing, sing, sing!

Diggin’ for the bone under the ground
He found that bone; he took it home. He ate it in a blink.
He said, “I think it’s time to take a nice long doggie drink!”
The doggie drinks, drinks, drinks…
Drinkin’ from his bowl down on the ground
He went outside and saw his friends; he said, “Let’s have some fun!”
He said, “Ready, set, go!” Those dogs began to run.
The doggies run, run, run, run…
Then STOP! And lay down on the ground.
The doggie felt a little flea hoppin’ round his ear.
“Hey flea!” he said, “You go away! You’re not allowed ‘round here!”
The doggie scratched, scratched, scratched, scratched…
Scratched till the flea fell to the ground.
The doggie said, “This grass smells great. The dirt feel nice and cool!”
He rolled around and kicked his feet like he was swimmin’ in a
swimming pool.
The doggie rolled, rolled, rolled, rolled…
Rolled all around and around on the ground.
The doggie digs, digs, digs, digs
The doggie drinks, drinks, drinks, drinks
The doggie scratched, scratched, scratched, scratched
And he rolled all around…around on the ground.

DIGGIN’
Action Song
What does a doggie do in the course of a day? Let’s follow this doggie around and have a lot of
fun with him. Follow the directions of the song: Dig, drink, run (if sitting, the run your fingers
around on the floor), scratch, and roll (if you do not want to roll on the floor, then roll your
arms like “The Wheels on the Bus.”). During the verses where there is not a lot of action, you
can clap your hands, stomp your feet or pat your knees or shoulders.

(I love you Mommy)
I SPY
Action Song
This is the musical version of the all time favorite game of “I Spy”. Create your “spy glasses”
by making a circle with your thumb meeting your index finger. Put on your “spy glasses” and let
the game (and song) begin! We know that you can’t get enough hugs from your children. In
knowing this we put a real lovey verse at the end. Now you have ONE MORE EXCUSE to give
your little one a hug!

Shaker Egg Maracas
ALL ABOARD! Get your shaker eggs and get on the train! You may either stand up and walk in a
circle for your train ride or put on your seatbelts and sit in a circle. Shake your eggs to the
rhythm of the song and follow the directions of each verse. Shake them up high for the verse
if you choose, dance and shake your eggs for the “momma choo-choo”, pull the big train whistle
and shake for “daddy choo-choo”, walk on tippy toes or shake very quietly for baby. Whatever
relative you choose to visit, be sure to have a great time!

DIAL 911
Action Song
Every child should learn to dial 911 in case of extreme emergency. For this “mock” emergency,
we will call the firefighters to save this day!
“Dial 911” - Hold your pretend phone and simulate pushing the pad keys on a phone or pat your
knees and keep to the rhythm of the song.
“Ring, ding, ding on your fire truck” – Drive the fire truck to the fire.
“Put your ladder up” – With opened palms make pushing motions with hands and arms to put the
big ladder up against the “building”.
“Pick up your big fire hose” – Put the big “fire hose” over your shoulders.
“1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8” - Pretend to climb your big ladder.
“Squirt that hose and put it out” – Squirt that big fire hose and put the fire out.
“Hooray” – Put your hands high in the air and give a big HOORAY!
“Uh, oh!” – Put your palms on your cheeks and give a VERY WORRIED LOOK! The children look
adorable when they do this!
“Put your big boots on” – Mime putting your fire boots on.
“Put on your big fire hat” – Mime putting your fire hat on.

1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 STICKS UP!
COTTON EYED JOE
Rhythm Stick Song
When using rhythm sticks, some control is necessary. For safety purposes, we have our
children sit down and stay down. To get the group focused, begin by counting, “1, 2, 3, sticks
up!” This is one of our gentler rhythm stick songs and there is also no specific direction given
as to where or how to play them. You get to be creative! Some suggestions: Tap them on the
floor, roll them, zip, march, tap them on your shoes, be a bee. In trying to keep to a theme,
you and your children can visit Cotton Eyed Joe and see what he’s doing in his busy day; make
a pizza, build a bird house, be in Cotton Eyed Joe’s band and pretend to play different
instruments or best yet, watch your children. They have the best creative ideas!
Get your group focused again at the end of the song for the 6 count (which is really an 8
count). When you hear “sticks up” at the end put your sticks up in the air again and remain
still. Rhythm sticks are wonderful “visuals” for teaching rhythm. Your children can actually
SEE and FEEL the beats!
JACK IN THE BOX
(Traditional)
Jack in the Box jumps up like this
He makes me laugh when he waggles his head
I gently press him down again
(sit up really straight)
(waggle your head)
(press child’s head or bend down on floor)
But Jack in the Box jumps up instead!
(jump up)

BOOGA-BOO
Scarf Hiding Song
Your little one will get to peek out from his/her hiding spot quite often during this “high
drama” hiding song! Every time you hear the word, “boo”, peek out from under your scarf.
Sometimes very little children can be hesitant to cover their faces, so show your HAPPY face
when you come out from under your scarf and very soon your child will be hiding like a pro!
RING AROUND THE ROSY
(Traditional)
Ring around the rosy, a pocket full of posies
Ashes, ashes
We all fall down (drop to your knees)
Cows in the meadow eating buttercups (pretend to eat)
Thunder-lightning (pound on the floor)
We all jump up (jump up!)
The King has sent his daughter to fetch a pail of water
Hush-a, hush-a (make shhh to lips)
We all bow down (bow down by bending at the waist)
The bird upon the steeple looks high above the people (wave hands up high)
Ashes, ashes
We all fall down (fall down)

BUBBLES
Action Song
What child (or adult, for that matter) does not like to blow and pop bubbles?! Well, get your
store bought or homemade bubbles out and start blowing them! See how many ways your
children can pop them. Use fingers, hands, feet, or noses! This is a very fun yet quiet song for
a very fun but not always quiet activity!

HUSH LITTLE BABY
(Traditional)
D
A
D
Hush little baby, don’t say a word. Mama’s gonna buy you a mockingbird
If that mockingbird don’t sing, Papa’s gonna buy you a diamond ring
If that diamond ring turns brass, Mama’s gonna buy you a looking glass
If that looking glass gets broke, Papa’s gonna buy you a billy goat
If that billy goat won’t pull, Mama’s gonna buy you a cart and bull
If that cart and bull turns over, Papa’s gonna buy you a dog named Rover
If that dog named Rover don’t bark, Mama’s gonna buy you a horse and cart
If that horse and cart falls down,
You’ll still be the sweetest little baby in town.
So hush little baby don’t say a word, Mama’s gonna buy you a mockingbird.
HUSH LITTLE BABY
Lullaby
We use stuffed animals to help a group “quiet down.” Rock your babies to sleep and listen to
the gentleness of this song.

Action Song
Take a peek into the pumpkin patch either by shading your eyes with your hands or put your
spy glasses on much like “I Spy.” Every time you count to 5 during the song, count along with
your voice and with your fingers. For long skinny pumpkins, start with your hands together and
then in sweeping motions, show how long those pumpkins are. Show teeny pumpkins by making
little circles using your thumbs and index fingers. Great big pumpkins are so big that they
can’t even fit in your arms. Hold out your arms and pretend that you are carrying a GREAT BIG
pumpkin! Have fun in the pumpkin patch!

Rhythm Sticks Song
When using rhythm sticks, some control is necessary. For safety purposes, we have our
children sit down and stay down. To get the group focused, begin by counting, “1, 2, 3, sticks
up! Let’s go out to the woods or your backyard and listen to the woodpeckers at work!” This
song gives no direction as to how or where to play the rhythm sticks, so here are some
suggestions: You can pretend that the woodpecker is pecking on the ground (on the floor).
Hold one stick standing on end (being the tree) and hammer with the other pretending that
the woodpecker is pecking on the tree. Roll your sticks like a woodpecker would take a “dirt
bath,” tap your sticks on your shoes, etc. Rhythm sticks are wonderful visuals! Your children
can actually see the beats of the song!

Animal Dancing
Get your “babies” (stuffed animals) out and get ready to do some dancing! Your babies need
some exercise, and this is a great song to get them going! Dance for the looby loo verse and
follow the directions for each verse by wiggling, tickling, hugging, etc.

Suggestions for Special Needs Activities
With all Makin’ Music songs, encourage the movements that are
suggested but cater them to your children’s abilities and comfort
levels. If your children can’t do the motions independently, give
them the help that they need by manipulation. Praise them to the
sky for their efforts and milestones!
If your kids cannot stand or jump, not to worry! All of the activities
can be done from a sitting position:
 Hopping movements can be done by “hopping” your hands up and
down from your lap.
 Instead of jumping, children can do some leg lifts or “jump”
their hands off of their laps.
 Encourage your children to “march” by moving their arms up and
down if they don’t have the ability to move their legs.
 Instead of running or walking, use your fingers and walk them
up arms, legs, or heads. Move slowly for walking, and quickly
for running.
 To imitate animals in the songs: bounce your hands on your lap
to hop like a frog; move your arms as much as possible for a
bird; walk with your fingers for a kitty; swing your arms up high
and low for a monkey and stretch to the sky to climb a tree.
Rhythm Sticks: Rhythm sticks are great visuals for any child. You
can encourage your children to use the suggested movements or
take this opportunity to introduce or reinforce new skills. If they
do not have the ability to hold the rhythm sticks, use the
adapted sticks.
Shaker Egg Maracas: If your children are not yet able to hold
their own eggs, use the adapted eggs. Otherwise use the shaker
eggs as motivation to help to accomplish certain goals that you may
be working on in therapy sessions.
You can use Makin’ Music songs to introduce or reinforce
movements that you are trying to instill in your kids. Music is such a
great way to get them to do things that they don’t want to do in a

Suggestions for Adapted Instruments
In our classes, we have had the privilege of working
with many special needs children. Some of them do not
have as highly developed small motor skills yet and are
not able to grasp the eggs and sticks for our songs. We
have adapted both of these instruments to make them
easier to hold and play. All you will need to adapt the
eggs and sticks are several strips of sticky-backed
Velcro, which can be bought at any craft or
sewing store.
Adapted Egg Maracas
Attach piece of sticky-backed Velcro to
the side of each egg. Loop a length of
Velcro around the hand and egg to hold
the egg in place as shown.
Adapted Sticks
Attach a piece of sticky-backed Velcro to each rhythm
stick. Loop a length of Velcro around the hand and
rhythm stick to hold the stick in place.

Suggestions for Homemade Instruments
Rhythm Egg Maracas
Purchase plastic Easter eggs,
rice, dried beans and colored
electrical tape. Fill the eggs
with the rice and beans, wrap
twice with the tape and…
SHAKE, SHAKE, SHAKE!!!
Rhythm Sticks
Purchase 1/2” to 1” wooden dowels,
sandpaper, stain and permanent
markers. Cut dowels into fourths
and sand well, especially on the
ends. Use rubber gloves or
sandwich bags to cover hands while
staining and rub on stain. When
dry, decorate with markers and
BANG AWAY!!!
Drum
Cover an empty oatmeal container
with a 12” or 14” helium grade
balloon. Put heavy tape around the
container where balloon ends. Use
your hands to beat the drum or
“pinch” between fingers and hear
the drum “croak.”
