The AP Track Begins at Entry Level!
Level I: Novice Mid-to-High Proficiency – The learner communicates
with simple phrases and short sentences, in response to learned input in
highly familiar contexts. Class activities include listening, speaking,
reading, and writing, strategies for understanding main idea from input, and
recombining learned structures in output. Grammar and culture are
embedded in comprehensible input rather than explicitly presented.
Level II PreAP: Novice High to Intermediate Low Proficiency –
Learners continue to be involved in activities at the novice level (Level 1),
with increasing length and complexity of input. The expectation for output
is slightly longer phrases and sentences, questions, and slightly more
vocabulary control. Grammar and culture are still embedded, and
inaccuracies are expected as students take more risks with language.
Level III PreAP: Intermediate Low-to-Mid Proficiency – Expectations for
comprehending and producing language continue to increase in complexity.
The Intermediate language learner can express himself in familiar contexts
using learned phrases, and can combine and recombine what he knows, hears
and reads, using sentences with some elaboration. He can ask and answer
questions to participate in short conversations. Culture is constantly
embedded, but more emphasis begins to be placed on grammar concepts to
increase accuracy, although risk-taking is encouraged.
Level IV AP: Intermediate Mid-to-High Proficiency – The learner is
able to combine and recombine sentences, strings of sentences, and
sometimes paragraphs, using what he knows, hears, and reads. Greater
elaboration is expected within mostly familiar contexts. The AP LOTE
student is expected to take the AP Exam; therefore a large portion of class
activities and assessments reflect the AP format. Grammar is presented in
order to promote accuracy of expression.
At all Levels of LOTE study, the expectation is that classes are conducted in the target language 90% of the time.
