… and Next Week …
Zech DeVits, for whom the event is named, died at age 22 in
2005, just weeks before graduating from NHTI with an Associate
degree in Addiction Counseling. Born with gigantism, a rare genetic
condition, and skeletal dysplasia, Zech had used a wheelchair since
age six. Despite his towering 7’8” frame and large features, Zech
quickly became a beloved role model on campus. The first
wheelchair benefit evolved as part of an education course project in
which students raised funds to help refurbish Zech’s wheelchairaccessible van. The campus continues to hold the event in his
memory, raising money to help other students with disabilities
purchase assistive equipment.
A highlight of this year’s event is a kickoff visit by wheelchair
bodybuilder and inspirational speaker Nick Scott. When Nick was
16, he was involved in a near fatal traffic accident. Wheelchair
bound, he gained weight and almost lost hope. But instead, he found
the determination to turn his life around, becoming a bodybuilder,
public speaker and personal trainer.
Nick will be speaking in the Wellness Center on Tuesday January 31 at 12 noon. This event is
free and open to the public; however, donations will be accepted with proceeds going to support the
Wheelchair Basketball Benefit.

A Day of Service for MLK
Fourteen NHTI students made Martin Luther
King Jr./Civil Rights Day a day "on" rather than a
day off, by devoting their time to community
service. The students cleaned and organized at
The Children's Place, painted walls and offices at
The Salvation Army, cleaned and helped sort
donations at The Friends Emergency Housing
Program, and assisted with an after school
program at The Concord Boys & Girls Club.
Student leader Eric Miller said, "It gave me
great pride to be involved with MLK day. It has
made me realize I am blessed in what I have."

Visual Arts Grad is
Outstanding Scholar
The campus community is invited to explore
Brian K. Vaughan’s graphic novel, Pride of
Baghdad, as the spring semester’s Campus
Reads title. As part of this year-long look at
dystopian worlds, Campus Reads turns to an
award-winning work based on real events.
In the spring of 2003, a pride of lions
escaped from the Baghdad Zoo during an
American bombing raid. Lost and confused,
hungry but finally free, the four lions roamed the
decimated streets of the Iraqi capital. In
documenting the plight of the lions, Pride of
Baghdad raises questions about the true
meaning of liberation, sacrifice, and selfdetermination.
Vaughan was a writer, editor, and producer
for the TV series Lost and executive producer of
Under the Dome. Wired called Vaughan "the
greatest comic book visionary of the last five
years." for his work on this book, Y: The Last
Man, Ex Machina, Runaways, Saga, and more.
A discussion of Pride of Baghdad will be held
in the Bistro on Tuesday, February 14 at
noon. Free pizza will be provided. Sponsored by
The Eye.
Michael Grady graduated from NHTI with a
degree in Visual Arts, Phi Theta Kappa with high
honors, in 2014. He transferred to the Rochester
Institute of Technology (RIT), where he has been
pursuing a bachelor's degree in Industrial Design - and continuing his tradition of excellent
scholarship.
Michael has been named an RIT Outstanding
Undergraduate Scholar for 2016-17, an honor
which requires a minimum 3.85 GPA, completion
of more than two-thirds of his degree
requirements, plus "demonstrated community
engagement." He will receive his award at a
ceremony in April, and has invited NHTI Visual
Arts department head Susan Haas to attend as
"the best instructor under whom I have had the
privilege of studying."
Michael will graduate from RIT this spring. To
