Getting the Kids Off to School pg 4
1. Early to Bed, Early to Rise: One of the best parts about
summer is getting to stay up late and go to those midnight
movie premiers, even on weekdays. But with school starting
early and a need to be attentive first thing in the morning,
it’s important to get kids used to an earlier bedtime. This can
be done by whittling bedtime down, fifteen or thirty minutes
at a time. If your kids have gotten accustomed to staying up
until 9 or 9:30, going to bed at 8 right off the bat is going to
be tough. Especially when it’s still so bright out.
2. A Classroom Visit: For some children, starting the new
year can inspire some anxious feelings. Meeting the teacher
before the first day of school and being able to see the
new classroom may help lessen your child’s fears about the
coming year.

The Good…
3. Emphasize the
Positives: The
Oral Digital camera? Check! We purchased a
small, state-of-the-art wand with a digital camera
on the end that can take pictures inside the mouth.
It has a cavity detection mode, and a plaque/ gum
disease mode which do a fantastic job of making dental
health more of a visual experience. Now you can really see
what we’re talking about when you’re in our chairs.
first day of school,
there’s always
something fun
to look forward
to. Getting to use
new school supplies,
meeting new friends,
being assigned a role
such as line leader or playing
kickball at gym are all fun and
interesting incentives to look forward to on
the first day.
Adding a compassionate, friendly, and knowledgeable front desk
staff? Triple check! Kaarin is on top of all of that. Tell her a joke the
next time you’re here.
4. Make it Special: The first day of school is a special
occasion. The night before, make it especially nice by letting
your child pick out the meals or their clothes. In the morning,
get the kids ready with a special first day breakfast. If you
show that you think the first day is exciting and unique, your
kids will see it that way too.
We have extended hours! We have added Monday evening hours for
your convenience. And we now work a little later on Thursdays too!
Mercury separator? You betcha! This year, Wrigleyville Dental is one
of the first offices in Chicago to have installed a mercury separator.

Personal Goals for 2014

Way back in January, I gave you an inside look at my New Year’s
resolutions. With half the year behind us, I think it’s a great time to
reflect and write a bit of a progress report. How are we doing on
those promises that were so important to us at the beginning
of the year? With only a handful of months left in 2014,
I’m sharing mine with you, and hope you take a
moment for self-reflection on your New Year’s
resolutions. Let’s reconnect with our priorities and
make sure we’re still on track for a great year!
Fixing Those First Day Jitters
If you’ve got a little one or two headed off to school this fall,
you know how difficult the transition can be. After all, it’s
hard to rationalize going back to school and homework after
three months of weekday sleepovers, camping trips, and
visits to the pool. If your child is one of those who is having a
hard time getting into the swing of things, here are some tips
to making the transition easier.

dentist (associate). Since our head assistant, Brittney’s, unexpected
departure we’ve had to delay the hunt for a new doctor until we
find the perfect replacement. We’re searching for an assistant who
can step in with the same care, kindness, and experience we
came to know and expect. If you can recommend a good
candidate, please let us know!
An Addition
Adding to the list: Strive for 30 minutes of sun,
every sunny day in Chicago. I need to up my
Vitamin D, so adding it to my resolutions will help
me remember it year round.
Still in Progress…
Not everything can be done at once! Hopefully within
the next few months, we will be the proud owners of a
new digital x-ray system, producing even quicker and more
accurate images. You may just be “wowed ” at your next checkup appointment.
Oh, the sore thumb . . . There’s always at least one resolution (at
least for me) that I tend to avoid like the plague and procrastinate
oh so much. And this year for me, it’s transforming our website.
We’ve added some new features, like “Pay Your Bill” and “Request an
appointment” But a big chunk of it is still in progress. We’ll keep
you updated.
Another en route . . . The AGD is an association of dentists dedicated
to excellence through continuing education (CE). To become a
fellow is a prestigious award among general dentists, a goal I’ve been
working on for the past 5 years. The prerequisites and exams are out
of the way now, and by averaging 100 CE hours per year, I only have

The Number ON THE SCALE
In today’s world, it’s hard for people to think that the
number on the scale is just that—a number. In many
television shows, like “The Biggest Loser,” everything
depends on the weight showcased on the fancy, electronic
readerboard. After you’re repeatedly reminded that how
much you weigh does indeed matter, stepping on a scale
is a daunting task. Will that number reflect just how much
fun you had over the weekend, or will it show you how
hard you’ve worked lately? So much stock is put into
the number on the scale when, in reality, no number will
determine your worth, how you feel, or how successful
you have been or will be. Here are a few reasons why you
should disregard that silly number for good:
Your weight fluctuates. If you weigh yourself in the
morning, you will weigh a different amount than if you
weigh yourself at night, after a day of eating. Things are
constantly going on in our bodies, making our weight
fluctuate from day to day. The number on the scale
doesn’t take into account what we have done or
are doing.
A scale doesn’t measure your health. Even if you are
AN EVENT you
You Won’t Feel the Burn,But Your Calories Will
slightly overweight, you could be much healthier than a
person at an “ideal” weight. Keep this in mind when you’re
easily cruising past people of all shapes and sizes on the
track at the gym, or heading up a long staircase without
huffing and puffing like your scrawny friend.
Your body is smarter than you think it is. If you exercise
and give your body the proper nutrition, you won’t see
the number on the scale climb. Listen to your body when
it tells you it’s hungry. Listen when it tells you that it’s not
hungry. Maybe you’re just thirsty? Your body will soon
regulate and shed the extra pounds it needs to in order to
rest at its natural weight. Give it a chance.
When it comes down to it, achieving the “perfect” weight
is a mindset. It’s not like that number will actually make
you happy. Self-love and self-worth won’t stem from a
number between your toes. If you’re thinking happiness
will hit as soon as you see the desired weight displayed,
you’ve got another thing coming. So as John Legend says,
“Love your curves and all your edges. All your perfect
imperfections.” And from there, you may find your happiness.

INVISALIGN DAY
September 15th, 2014
3:30- 6:30 pm
Burning calories is way easier said than done (as all dieters know) and calories are in almost everything. However, there are ways to burn
calories, every day, without resorting to a trip to the gym:
1. There are 3,500 calories in 1 lb. So by making small changes,
like consuming 100 calories less each day, you can lose almost 1 lb
by the end of the month!
2. The simple act of nomming on a stick of gum can burn up to
11 calories in 12 minutes. (Not to mention its anti-cavity benefits
too!) You can also chew on a stick of celery for similar effects.
3. Laughing heartily can burn up to 1.3 calories per minute.
When was the last time you went to a comedy club?
4. Eating a 60-calorie apple is way better than drinking 60
calories of apple juice. Your body is forced to run a little hotter

in order to digest whole foods—effectively amping up your
metabolism.
5. Did you know that standing burns 33% more calories
than sitting?
6. Consuming half a teaspoon of cayenne pepper naturally raises
your body’s metabolism. (Try putting some in water with honey
and lemon.)
7. Getting a good night’s sleep (seven to eight hours for most
people) lowers your levels of ghrelin, the hunger hormone—
meaning you’ll eat less without even trying.
CONTINUED FROM COVER...
a few left to be considered for the fellowship. But I’m on target
to hit by the end of the year!
And here’s a quick rundown of my personal goals:
- Run a 10k Race – >That’s still coming!
- Travel to one country abroad -> While it’s not Africa or Cuba
as I dreamed of in my resolutions, I did go to Jamaica. Ya mon!
- Eat 90% fresh produce -> This one’s a bit hard to gauge. I
would say I’m doing a good job sticking to a mostly earthgrown food diet.
- Meditate every morning -> Way to set high expectations!
While meditating every morning hasn’t been realistic for me, I
usually get in two to four days a week. It’s probably like flossing
for some people. I get it!
- Visiting my parents at least twice a month -> Oh, yea! I’ve
been a good daughter.
So there’s the inside scoop of a very human’s set of resolutions.
You win some, you add some, you change some . . . as long as
I’m moving forward into a happy healthy direction, then I’m
succeeding. I’m a strong believer that, if you write down your
goals, there’s a greater chance they’ll come true! Even if you
missed writing your New Year’s resolutions in January, write up
some mid-year ones now; let’s see how we all do at the end of
the year!
