round tables - Royal London

ROUND TABLES
These small challenges help groups to understand the
importance of open and constructive feedback.
To be completed in groups of:
4–5
Time required:
15 minutes per task (10 for activity and 5 for feedback per task)
Method:
Set up four tables with a different task at each (the number of tasks
can vary depending on the number of attendees – see separate
sheet). These mini tasks must include steps that can be delegated to
members, such as sorting cards or drawing blindfolded. Have each
team select one person to act as team leader. The team leader is not
allowed to participate in the task; they can only communicate and
delegate tasks. Once everyone has visited all tables (and therefore
completed all tasks), take a moment to discuss how the leaders
and team members felt under each individual’s command. The
leaders can get feedback on their leadership style. To add a sense
of competition, you could time the group at each table.
Materials required:
Pads of paper
Pens
Playing cards
Balloons
Blindfolds
Logo sheet

ROUND TABLES
What to look out for:
Ensure everyone is participating.
Ensure there is an attendee leading each task.
Prompt questions:
What did you find easy/difficult about leading these tasks?
What leadership style worked best when carrying out these tasks?
If you could do these tasks again, what would you do differently?
Did everyone feel comfortable playing the leader?

Task 01:
Sort the cards
The group will have a deck of unsorted cards that they must sort by numerical order
(Ace–King) and by suit. The leader is the only person who can speak in the group
but cannot actively partake. The leader must therefore devise a system for the other
attendees to undertake the task in the fastest time possible.
Materials required:
Deck of cards (you can buy these here)
Task 02:
Balloon animal
The leader must advise the rest of the group on how to build a balloon animal without
actively partaking.
Materials required:
Modelling balloons (you can buy these here)
Task 03:
It’s a draw
All attendees apart from the chosen leader must be blindfolded. The leader describes
a scene for the blindfolded attendees to draw, e.g. a famous film scene, the London
skyline, a famous landmark.
Materials required:
A3 paper (if unavailable in your office, you can buy this here)
Sharpies or pencils
Blindfolds (you can buy these here)
Task 04:
Guess the logo
Each group will be provided with a sheet of paper that contains masked famous logos.
The leader must take the lead in guessing as many logos as possible.
Materials required:
Logo sheets (see the following pages for supporting materials)
