achieve their highest individual potential; empowering them to participate in a diverse global community.
A message from our principal…
Dear Deltona Lakes Elementary Family,
Welcome to the 2013-2014 school year. I look forward to another successful school year as we work
together to provide the best educational experience for our students. Thanks to the outstanding participation of our parents, business partners and community volunteers throughout the year, we once again
received the Five Star School Award and the Golden School Award. I am appreciative and proud of the
faculty, students, staff, and stakeholders who work diligently each and every day to help DLE achieve
these recognitions and awards.
Due to a decline in student enrollment, promotions, relocations and retirements, we welcome a few new
teachers to our fabulous Deltona Lakes family! Joining us this school year are the following people:

I look forward to seeing you at Open House on September 19. Our hope is that you will gain valuable
information about your child’s classes and their teachers’ expectations. Please take advantage of this time
to pass by the media center to set up your parent portal account if you haven’t done so already. My
secretary, Cathy Flores, will be there to gladly assist you. I’m confident that you will enjoy having access
to your child’s school information from the comfort of your home. While in the media center, be sure to
inquire about some of the parent involvement resources we offer such as our VIPS (Volunteers in Public
Schools) and Business Partner programs and our very supportive PTA.
Deltona Lakes Elementary strives for excellence for all students. DLE will continue to develop life-long
learners by providing a rigorous and relevant curriculum in a safe, secure and enriching environment. It is
an honor to be the principal of such a fine school and I thank you for your continuous input, support and
dedication.
Sincerely,
Ms. Judith M. Rivera

In the art room we have gone back in time to
the Middle Ages – a time of knights and
castles, superstitions and dragons, chivalry
and hardship. We will be creating art that
captures our theme and studying artists who
were also captivated by this exciting time in
history. Please ask your children to share what
they are learning and making and share what
you know with them. Also new this year, ask
your child to tell you how they can be the
winning class to win the “Awesome Artists
Award” for the month. First winner
announced in the next newsletter.

Thank you for supporting the children at Deltona Lakes.
On September 5th, the halls of Deltona Lakes Elementary
School changed forever as our guidance counselor, Mrs.
Stephanie Bondinell, retired after 25 years of service. To say
“DLE will not be the same” is merely an understatement. If
there is one person who has truly given more than 100% to
the children of our community and has done so with
compassion, courage and determination, it is Mrs.
Bondinell. She has been an integral part in keeping our DLE families united. Mrs.
Bondinell has spearheaded numerous activities including Red Ribbon Week, Terrific Kids, Citizenship Day, SGA
(Student Government Association), FFEA (Florida Future Educators of America), Toys for Treats, Teacher of the
Week recognition, Sunshine Club and many other school and community events. Most importantly, she provides
the ties that bind the parent-student-teacher relationship.
Thank you Mrs. Bondinell for all you have done for DLE. Need someone to talk to, she’ll listen; need someone
to help you, she’ll be your guide; need something for a family, she’ll get it; need a shoulder to cry on, she has
two that are always available. We will never forget the impact you have had on so many lives -- both young and
old. Enjoy your retirement!

Mrs. Campbell and Ms. Jones
The 5th grade classes will be going to the Indian River Lagoon
in May. Start saving money now! The cost will be approximately $22. The dates/classes are as follows:
May 6
Ms. Kent and Ms. Auerbach
May 8
Mr. Nial and Ms. Vogel
The late Jim Valvano who coached basketball at North Carolina
State said we should do these things everyday:
1. LAUGH
2. THINK
3. HAVE YOUR EMOTIONS MOVED TO TEARS (Dads, it’s okay to cry in front of your
children. It does not mean you are weak.) We call this transparent realism and it
simply means your children can see what you are doing and it is real!
We have two more:
4. DO - Do something everyday with your children. Do it, both physically and emotionally, for 30 minutes. Walk, run, walk/run, bike, swim, play catch, shoot baskets,
swim, go hit balls...Just DO! Read - read to them and let them read to you. Reading
is the gateway to success.
5. TALK! Put the iPod, cell phone and X-Box away. Talk to your children every day
and listen to them. Learn from them as they do from you. It’s a win-win. Talk as
you walk and play. You’ll be a hero for your kids, and we need more heroes!
Meet 3rd grade teacher, Miss Judy Tracy...
Miss Tracy has been an educator for 21 years, 18 of those years at DLE. She was born in
Killeen, Texas, at Fort Hood, then lived four years in Germany before moving to Muncie,
IN and finally, Elkhart, IN where she spent her childhood. Miss Tracy went to Indiana
University where she earned her BS in Education, and Stetson University, where she
earned her Masters in Reading K-12. She is one of only a small percentage of National
Board Certified Teachers, which happens to be her greatest career accomplishment. She
is also a National Trainer for Reading Comprehension. Who
inspired her to teach? Her daddy. She loves nurturing students and witnessing the “ah-ha” moment in her children’s
faces. Before teaching she was in personnel management and an officer on a cruise ship.
She passed the Merchant Marine safety class by scaling a 20-foot wall from a row boat in
the water (and earned a trophy for tenacity!) Being an educator brings about many
challenges. When asked what her greatest challenge is, she replied “the societal norms
that have altered the preparedness of our students in the education area. Closing that
gap is extremely challenging”.
When she’s not teaching, Miss Tracy enjoys reading, traveling, good friends and good food.
Speaking of traveling, she looks forward to doing more when she retires and hopes to visit all 50 US states (she’s already been to 42 of them and has seen most of Europe!) When asked where she would live if she could live anywhere? She replied, “Bermuda because of the pink sand.”
Miss Tracy is an inspirational teacher whose fun and radiating spirit fills the classroom. You’ll find her wearing red
during Red Ribbon Week, sporting blue every spirit day and flaunting Dr. Seuss garb on Dr. Seuss’s birthday. She has
a positive impact on all her students which holds true to her favorite quote “to teach is to touch a life forever.”
Back-to-school expenses can add up! If your child is in need of a backpack, limited supplies are available
from the Jewish Federation of Volusia County. Just have your child write a thank you note to the Jewish
Federation, bring it to the front office at school and they will receive a backpack filled with school supplies.
