FEBRUARY News 2017
OF THE OHIO VALLEY
A LETTER
FROM 2017
HSOV BOARD
OF DIRECTORS
PRESIDENT
JULIE LOWTHER
I would like to begin by
thanking all the staff,
volunteers,
members
and supporters of the
Humane Society of the
Ohio Valley. All of us are
here for one thing … the
love of the animals.
For that reason, last year was a great year because of you. Our fundraising
team did a fabulous job raising funds at a record high. Our volunteers
promoted each and every dog, cat, rabbit, pig, rat (and all the other
animals) that came thru the doors. The staff worked incredibly hard to
ensure that all who entered were given the best care.
We would not be complete without the supporters helping financially,
physically and socially. It takes all kinds of people to guarantee the
success of our shelter.
I challenge you to make this year better than the last. However, this
will only happen with the help of all of you. Continue doing what you
do best, try something new, and bring a friend while doing it. Attend
those fundraisers, walk a dog, cuddle a cat, share the Facebook post that
connects a lost or homeless animal with its family. That is what will take
us to a new level and leave a positive impact on all that enter and leave
our doors.

on many committees in varying capacities J
We also said good-bye to HSOV Executive Director, Kelly Goedel, as she tendered her resignation effective February 2nd

Thank you to the Friends of Feline Fund for their financial
assistance and cooperation with the HSOV as part of an
ongoing joint program for spaying/neutering our shelter
cats. This program allows us to ensure that all HSOV cats
(and older kittens) are altered before adoption. This is
a win-win program for everyone! The adoption fee for
HSOV cats is $20 with an approved adoption application
(which includes vaccinations, wormer, flea treatment,
and spay/neuter procedure). So the spay/neuter is
provided free-of-charge for our adopters 
TNR [TRAP-NEUTER-RETURN] PROGRAM
The Humane Society of the Ohio Valley has begun working
with the community to implement a Trap-Neuter-Return
Program under the leadership of HSOV Shelter Manager,
Misty Carpenter.
A total of 363 HSOV cats were spayed/neutered during
the 2016 calendar year and has surely helped to control
over-population and to increase the adoptions of HSOV
kitties.
Trap-Neuter-Return involves humanely trapping cats,
having them spayed/neutered and vaccinated, and then
returning them to their outdoor homes where they will
be cared for by volunteers.
If you would like to make a tax-deductible contribution
to help provide spay/neuter of cats, you may send a
donation to:
To carry out this program effectively, we need your help.
The initial cost of setting up a TNR program is estimated
to be $3800 (to purchase traps etc)

The HUMANE SOCIETY OF THE
OHIO VALLEY and 24 other
shelters/rescues groups (who
are Petfinder members and
display our adoptable pets on
Petfinder.com) were randomly
selected to receive one of the
$10,000 grants which were
awarded in conjunction with
Petfinder’s 20th Anniversary Celebration ❤ We are most thankful to
Petfinder  Details of the donation/grant as provided by Petfinder:
ST. LOUIS, Nov. 17, 2016 -- Petfinder, the nation’s leading resource for
pet adoption, announced today it will donate $250,000 to the Petfinder
Foundation in celebration of its 20th anniversary. The donation will be
awarded by the Petfinder Foundation in $10,000 grants to 25 shelter and
rescue members, helping each organization to continue to transform
the lives of adoptable pets in their care, as well as cultivate more lifelong
relationships.
Beginning in late August, Petfinder asked people across the country to
help make a $200,000 donation possible by watching and generating
at least 1 million views of its #MetOnPetfinder anniversary video,
which shows how adoptable pets have transformed the lives of their
adopters. Pet lovers viewBed the video more than 1 million times by
mid-September, leading Petfinder to raise the goal to 1.25 million views
and increase the donation by $50,000. The second goal was surpassed
as the video was viewed more than 1.9 million times during an eightweek period.
“This year, Petfinder celebrates 20 years of helping find pets their forever
homes. We are thankful for the support we’ve seen from pet advocates
across country for the #MetOnPetfinder program which allowed us to
overwhelmingly exceed our goals,” said Kristin Ryan, Purina Pet Welfare
team managing director. “Petfinder is making this donation to continue
to demonstrate our shared passion for supporting adoptable pets.”
The following 25 shelters and rescue members were selected to receive
one of the $10,000 grants:

In Memory of “Ollie” Knight …..
Dale and Courtney Knight recently said ‘good-bye’
to their beloved Yorkshire Terrier “Ollie” who passed
away on October 20, 2016. “Ollie” had given the
Knight family 12 years of joy, companionship,
and love. Dale and Courtney miss him very much
but celebrate the time they had together with
“Ollie”. They have chosen to honor him by making
a generous donation to the HSOV in his memory.
And their donation will be matched by a corporate
matching gift. Dale and Courtney Knight are
lifetime members of the HSOV. We extend our
sympathy for their loss and thank them for helping
shelter animals in memory of “Ollie”❤
The HSOV OFFERS
MICROCHIPPING
SERVICE
for dogs and cats at a
very reasonable cost …
$20 for the microchip
and no registration
fee through PetLink/
Datamars. This is a great way to ensure that your
pet has the best chance of being reunited with you
in the event that he/she is lost. All veterinarians and
animal shelters (including HSOV) have microchip
scanners and can locate owners of microchipped
dogs and cats. This is especially helpful if dog tags/
collars are missing and fantastic for cats since they
tend to wear breakaway collars for safety reasons.
This microchipping service is available to all pet
owners and is not limited to HSOV adopters. No
appointment is necessary and the service is available
during normal shelter hours (Monday-Friday from
11am-5pm; Saturday 11am-4pm). However, you
should call beforehand (740.373.5959) to make
sure that staff is available that day who can implant
the microchip.
Blessing Of The Animals
The Humane Society of the Ohio Valley participated in a Blessing
of the Animals event on Saturday, October 8, 2016 which was
sponsored by the Williamstown Area Ministerial Alliance. The event
was held at the Waverly Volunteer Fire Department in Waverly, WV
from 10am-1pm.
Four HSOV dogs attended the event with their favorite volunteers
and joined in the festivities. Each dog received an individual blessing
by one of the three pastors who were officiating (David Calvert,
Teresa Belt Markins, and Elizabeth Campbell-Maleke).
VIOLET
HSOV Volunteers and their ‘dates’ for the event were:
OBOE
Jo Ellen Gray with “Oboe”
Amy Rogers with “Maria”
Michele Shamblin with “Violet”
Beth Underwood with “Speckles”
Teresa Cunningham (HSOV Board Member/Volunteer) and Sharon
Paul (Volunteer Photographer) were also in attendance.
SPECKLES
Oboe, Maria, Speckles and Violet put their best paws forward and
were great good-will ambassadors as they represented our shelter.
Maria, Speckles and Violet have found homes, but “Oboe” is still
waiting for the perfect family to call his very own.
MARIA
A special thanks to Amy Rogers for coordinating HSOV’s participation
and for her match-making skills in pairing up the perfect dog with
the perfect volunteer ❤ ❤
TERESA CUNNINGHAM
HSOV FOSTER PROGRAM
If you love animals but cannot adopt on a permanent basis
(or cannot add another pet to your household), we hope that
you will consider becoming a foster parent. Foster moms
(and dads) are always needed, and this doesn’t necessarily
have to be a long-term commitment on your part. Fostering
is a wonderful way to help HSOV shelter dogs and cats. There
are several reasons why a dog/cat might need a temporary
home. Many times we just need a short-term place for a dog
or cat awaiting transport. Pregnant/nursing mothers or dogs/
cats who aren’t adapting to shelter life truly appreciate and
benefit from the hospitality of a real home environment. And
with kitten season fast approaching, we are always desperate
for foster families who can help with bottle-feeding orphaned
kittens or un-weaned kittens brought to our shelter without
their mother 
A spare bedroom or bathroom usually provides the perfect
accommodation (especially for cats). If you would like to provide
a temporary home for an HSOV dog or cat, we encourage you
to contact our Shelter Manager Misty Carpenter (manager@
hsov.org) or our Foster Program Committee Member Celeste
Ridgway ([email protected]). These ladies will be happy to answer your questions and give assistance as needed. You
would be required to complete a Foster Application Form (available at the shelter and on our www.hsov.org website and submit
it for approval. The HSOV provides food, necessary supplies, and medical care if needed. You provide a safe haven, love, and
attention ❤

“Volunteers Do Not
Necessarily Have
The Time, They
Just Have The
Heart”……
There is an old
saying ‘If you
want something
done, ask a busy
person’,
and
that is certainly
true of our
HSOV volunteers
and also our
Vo l u n t e e r
Coordinators 
We appreciate our
volunteers,
and
the dogs and cats in
our shelter absolutely
adore them and look
forward to spending oneon-one time with them. Our
volunteers faithfully come to the
shelter each day to walk/socialize
the dogs and to cuddle/play with the
cats. Volunteers who have attended our
orientation sessions also participate in
evening walks on Tuesdays and Thursdays
and Sunday afternoons.
There are many ways to volunteer to help the
HSOV in addition to walking dogs/cuddling
cats, including: assisting at adopt-a-thons,
fundraising activities, grant writing, computer/
information technology assistance, animal
grooming, grounds keeping/maintenance,
nursing home visits with animals, and transport to name a
few. Our Volunteer Application Form (available at the shelter
or on our hsov.org website) provides a listing of activities so
that you may indicate a preference for your fields of interest.
Volunteer Orientations are held at the shelter from 1:003:00-pm on Sundays and appointments are not required 
Linda Perry and Brenda DeWees conduct our orientations and
would love to have you join them. They will present you with
an official HSOV Volunteer Badge & Lanyard following your
orientation session. You will be given a tour of the shelter, a
volunteer handbook, and a safety/educational briefing of “do’s
and don’ts”. You will then have the opportunity to meet some
of our adoptable cats when Linda conducts the Kitty ‘Jungle
Room’ segment of the orientation. And you will meet some
of our shelter dogs and be briefed on safe handling/walking
procedures when Brenda leads you through this segment of
orientation. Richard Long conducts the dog handling/walking
segment of orientation if Brenda is not available.
We can also schedule orientations on an alternate day if
Sundays are inconvenient. Ginger Eubank, Julie Lowther, and
Amy Rogers are always ready, willing, and capable to provide
orientation sessions for new volunteers as well 
Linda Perry posts a “Welcome New Volunteers” each Sunday
on our HSOV Facebook Group page. We are printing several
pictures of recent volunteer orientation sessions in hopes
of inspiring others to join us. The looks on the faces of the
volunteers, shelter dogs, and shelter kitties are priceless 
8
The last photo shows new volunteers as they learn the
importance of hand sanitizing between each animal. Facilities
that rescue, shelter, and care for animals are highly susceptible
to disease and cross contamination. Linda specifically asked
that we include this photo and educational message since it is
stressed over and over again during orientation  
“WAGS & WHISKERS PAWS WALK”
The 2016 HSOV ‘Wags & Whiskers’ Paws Walk was
held on Sunday, September 25, 2016 in East Muskingum
Park, Marietta, Ohio. This fundraiser is one of our most
popular events and always proves to be entertaining 
We love seeing the original costumes that many of the
dogs are wearing  We had an extra special treat this
year when Toni Weaver brought kitty “Kit Kat” (who
was advertised as ‘The Smallest Lion In The World] ❤
Several HSOV shelter dogs were also in attendance and
were accompanied by volunteers and shelter staff. Our
dogs put their best paws forward in hopes of finding a new
home as they ‘worked the crowd’ and were introduced on
center stage 
Thanks to Co-Chairpersons Teresa Cunningham, Kelly
Goedel, Becky Johnston, Celeste Ridgway, Deb Ryder,
and Jamiann Voshel and their committee members for
organizing this event, and to our many volunteers who
played key roles in making the 2016 Paws Walk memorable
as well as profitable  Approximately $2600 was raised
for the benefit of our shelter animals. The HPAC/Marietta
High School students were also in attendance and
orchestrated the “Woofrich Pet Show” contest. We thank
and appreciate the people in our wonderful community
who attended with their pets and supported the HSOV 
Many individuals and businesses supported the Paws
Walk by donating prizes and/or monetary donations.
Thank you to Boxers Bed & Biscuits, Invisible Fence
Company, and WeLovPets for your sponsorships and
providing information booths to represent your business
establishments.
We wish to thank Nathan Hess who donated his time,
talents, and sound equipment to serve as our ‘Master
of Ceremonies’ again this year. We highly recommend
Nathan if you are looking for a super DJ for a party or
event!
A special thanks to Reverend Teresa Markins (Crossroads
United Methodist Church) for her heartfelt “Blessing Of
The Animals” which she bestowed upon the dogs (and Kit
Kat) at the conclusion of the “Parade Your Paws Walk”.
Space doesn’t permit us to publish all of the photos in
our newsletter, so we’ve chosen a few which we hope
captured the spirit of the day. There are two albums on
our Facebook page which include photographs of all of
the dogs in attendance and their two-legged friends who
accompanied them. We hope those photos will provide
a glimpse of this event for those who weren’t able to
attend the 2016 Paws Walk. And we would love to have
the opportunity to include a photo of you and your dog
(or cat) in the 2017 Paws Walk Albums  

“JOSEPH” (A ‘HALLMARK CHRISTMAS’ STORY)
“JOSEPH” was a sweet 5-year old male
Tuxedo kitty who was brought to the HSOV on
January 5, 2017 by a Good Samaritan who had
found him in Lowell Ohio. “Joseph” had a very
touching ‘Hallmark Christmas-type’ story which
brought tears to our eyes when we heard where
he had been found 
This sweet cat had taken refuge and was sleeping
in the manger of a nativity setting at a church in
the small village of Lowell. The Good Samaritan
who re-told his
story asked that we name him Joseph
❤
“Joseph” had a rather rugged-looking outward appearance and seemed to have fallen
on bad times. But someone surely loved him at one time in his life since he had such
a lovable, affectionate personality and rubbed up against you for attention. The pads
of his paws were swollen and sore, and he tended to ‘favor’ them. Yet he seemed to
instinctively know that he was in good hands when he met our kennel techs.
“Joseph” had a gray-and-white short smooth coat in a tuxedo pattern, a long tail, and
an adorable (rather chubby-looking) face with a pink nose and long white whiskers.
He was given vaccinations, wormer, and Revolution flea treatment the day he arrived,
and our kennel techs gave him extra TLC. One of our kennel techs who had a small
child even brought tiny baby socks for “Joseph” to wear when the pads of his feet were
misted daily with a soothing medicated spay 
We posted Joseph’s pictures and story on our Petfinder/Facebook pages. Hundreds
of people began to fall in love with him, and we were sure that he would be adopted.
However, we were saddened when “Joseph” was combo tested a few days later and we
discovered that that he was positive for FIV (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus). We knew
that we had to find a special home/rescue for this special kitty.
As it turned out, a compassionate lady had seen Joseph’s chubby face on Petfinder,
and he ‘spoke’ to her heart before she ever read the story of where he was found.
“Joseph” was kept safe in our shelter where he was given the medical attention he
needed (and a daily dose of love and cuddling) while arrangements were made for
his scheduled transport on January 26, 2017. By the time you are reading Joseph’s
story in this newsletter, he will be safely in his new foster
home in Chicago ❤
We are thankful for Kylie Seese (who was the Good
Samaritan who found “Joseph” in the manger and
brought him to our shelter knowing that she needed to
do something to save him). The pads of Joseph’s paws
were so sore and swollen that he would not walk through
the straw (and miraculously this might also have saved
his life since he would not leave the nativity scene).
Joseph’s ‘Christmas Angel’ and the lady in Chicago who
fell in love with his chubby face gave this story a happilyever-after ending  
10
We’d like to believe that a belated ‘Christmas Miracle’ took place on
January 4th 2017 for “Leon”, who was one of our long-term residents ….
“Leon” had arrived at the HSOV
on October 12, 2015 after he
was picked up by the Washington
County Dog Warden. Sadly, his
family never came looking for him.
“Leon” was a majestic 6-year old
Pit Bull Terrier mix. His sleek black
coat (with a white formal bib on
his chest and white ‘spats’ on his
paws) gave him the allusion of wearing a
formal tuxedo, and he looked very regal
indeed. “Leon” had a lovable, calm
disposition, and he became a favorite
with our kennel techs and volunteers.
He walked well on a leash and was a real
gentleman with his people friends, but
he didn’t do well with other animals ..
which was likely the reason he did not
find a home quickly 
bond that he and Russell Meaux
have between them already. God
surely did bless this pair with each
other (and me too because I get to
know and love them both)”
Russ shares pictures of Leon on our
facebook pages, and they are ‘proof
positive’ that Leon is one happy guy.
Leon obviously knows how much
he is loved (and vice versa). Most
of Leon’s photos show him sleeping
next to Russ. Leon always looks very
relaxed, and we have to smile when
we see that big boy lying on his back
with all four feet in the air snoozing
away 
“Leon” has been registered with the
National Service Animal Registry
as a Certified Emotional Support
Therapy Dog and has an Official
ID Badge (with his original shelter
photo) to wear on his vest these
days. Russ gave us permission to
include photos of Leon’s certificate/
badge and new status
“Leon” had just celebrated his
second Christmas holiday season
with us in December 2016 when
a kind gentleman came to our
shelter looking for a nice canine
companion with whom to share
to his life. After meeting all of
the dogs, it was “Leon” that
Russell (Russ) Meaux bonded
with and chose to adopt ❤
When we asked Russ if there was
anything he would like to include
with this article, he replied with
the message: “I hope that this will
spark a few more people to adopt
great dogs like Leon”
After spending one year and three
months in a kennel, we said goodbye to this special dog on January
4, 2017 when Russ Meaux signed
the official adoption paperwork
and took his new best friend
home ❤❤ There wasn’t a dry
eye in the shelter that afternoon,
and we cried many happy tears
for our boy “Leon” as he left the
shelter with his new master/
companion 
Russ Meaux is surely a hero
and a ‘knight in shining
armor’ in the eyes of our
shelter staff, kennel techs,
and volunteers. Thank you
for choosing “Leon” and
for giving him a fantastic
home….
We posted an adoption album on
our main HSOV page later that
evening which included many
photos taken on January 4th,
and we loved the comments
that Russ and one of his friends
wrote:
January 4 …. (Russ)
“I love Leon so much. The kisses
I got before ever getting out of
the parking lot with him were so
awesome”
January 5 … (from one of Russ’ friends)

A BIT OVERWHELMED...
BUTTERS
CONSTANCE
DAISY

JACK
When 40 cats arrived in our shelter on December 1,
2016, to say that we were a bit overwhelmed would be an
understatement. Those beautiful felines had been loved
by their previous family and had been cared for to the best
of their ability, but with so many mouths to feed (and litter
boxes to clean) they began to feel overwhelmed as well.
HSOV Humane Officer/Shelter Manager Misty Carpenter
and some of our kennel techs worked with the family and
transported/unloaded the cats and brought them into our
shelter during the late afternoon/early evening hours.
Each of the 40 cats had unique names and were social but,
understandably, were frightened and confused having lost
their home 
Staff and volunteers quickly began to process
paperwork for kennel cards, assess health/medical needs,
and vaccinate/worm each of the new arrivals. By late that
evening, they were housed in crates or cages and snuggled
in their beds with soft warm blankets  Many of the kitties
were kept together so that they could provide comfort and
security for each other.
Though our “inn was full”, we always manage to
accommodate innocent souls who need our help.. And we
fell in love with each these kitties as we learned their names
and personalities. We began to administer medications
and schedule veterinarian- and spay/neuter appointments
in anticipation of finding each of the 40 cats a new home.
There were two nursing mother cats who found foster
homes.
As of January 25th, all had been spayed/neutered with
the exception of two younger kittens (Miss Kitty and Tutu).
Of the total of 40 cats, only 13 have not yet been adopted
or found rescue groups:

BUTTERS [2-year old, male, white/brown swirled tabby]
CONSTANCE [4-year old, female, Calico]
DAISY [One-year old, female, gray/white]

JACK [8-year old, male, white gray tabby]
MISS KITTY [5-month old, female, brown tabby]

PUCK [One-year old, male, black/white]
SISTER [3-year old, gray/tan/white]

We are including their photos with this article in hopes
that someone will fall in love and adopt  And please remember that we
have nearly 100 other cats/kittens who also need homes. All are pictured
with descriptions on our Petfinder/Facebook pages.

‘We’ve grown accustomed to their faces,
They almost make our day begin,
Their smiles, Their frowns’…
The lyrics to that well-known song have come to describe our feelings about
“Oboe, Tequila, and Triton” (HSOV Dogs) and “Daisy, Marbles & Carla” (HSOV
Cats) since they have the distinction of being our longest-term residents in the
shelter. Our staff and volunteers love them but we realize that shelter life is no
substitute for a loving home environment with a family to call their own. We
admit that they may come with a little extra ‘baggage’ .. (Oboe, Tequila, and
Triton don’t really care much for all other dogs and do not like cats). “Daisy”
(whom we affectionately call ‘Crazy Daisy’ at times) has a quirky personality and
has become famous as our ‘Christmas Tree Cat’  Our Shelter Manager, Misty
Carpenter, is the President of Daisy’s Fan Club   “Marbles & Carla” are both
senior kitties who enjoy the quiet life in our Humane Officer’s Office..
OBOE
TEQUILA
TRITON
We know that there is a perfect home for each of them if we can only locate
that person, family, or rescue group. Shelter Manager, Misty Carpenter, would
love to introduce you and tell you more about each of them. They are also on
our Petfinder/Facebook pages which descriptions.
“OBOE” is a magnificent 9-year old neutered male Chocolate Labrador Retriever
mix who has been with us since February 9, 2015 after he was surrendered by
his owner. Oboe weighs 70 lbs.
“TEQUILA” is a beautiful 5-year old spayed female brindle/white Pit Bull Terrier
mix who was surrendered by her owner on September 3, 2015. Tequila weighs
80 lbs.
“TRITON” is a majestic 5-year old neutered male black/white Labrador Retriever
mix who was surrendered by his owner on September 15, 2016. Though he
weighs 105 lbs., Triton is gentle on a leash.
“DAISY” is a cute 4-year old spayed female brown tabby kitty who was
surrendered by her owner on March 14, 2014. Daisy has a bit of a cat-i-tude
and is truly unforgettable. She is quite playful and loves feathery teaser toys,
balls, and anything that sparkles and dangles. Daisy is the self-appointed treeand gift inspector each Christmas season.
DAISY
MARBLES
“MARBLES” is a lovely senior female Calico kitty (possibly 11-years old) who was
surrendered by her owner on March 4, 2016. She has a sweet, gentle disposition
and would be ever so happy to find a home where she could snuggle up with a
new master/mistress.
“CARLA” is a sweet senior female brown tabby kitty of indeterminate age. She
was brought to the HSOV on June 7, 2016 and was definitely ‘under the weather’
and not feeling well, yet she maintained her friendly personality and has always
been appreciative of the kindness of our kennel techs. She and Marbles are our
‘Golden Girls’ and are given extra TLC, but they would be much happier in an
honest-to-goodness home.

JAMES EDWARD BALDINGER
11/7/1934 – 01/14/2017
We were saddened to learn that Jim Baldinger (who was a long-time
supporter, friend, and volunteer at the HSOV) passed away on January 14,
2017 in Raleigh NC.
Jim grew up in South Bend, Indiana. Following graduation from the
University of Notre Dame, he went into flight training for the United States
Air Force and served as a Captain in the USAF as a pilot. After serving 10
years in the military, Jim enjoyed a career in commercial aviation and was a
pilot with PanAm and United Airlines. When he retired in 1999, he became
involved with the HSOV and was an extraordinary volunteer. Jim served
at one point in time as our Shelter Manager, and he was a past Board of
Directors member.
Jim was always there when we needed him. He coordinated our recycle program, picked up our mail at
the post office, purchased dog tags that were sold at our shelter, collected/delivered donated supplies, and
coordinated the donation boxes at local businesses. He served on committees for major fundraisers (i.e.,
FurBall and Paws Walk) and was the HSOV Nominations Committee Chairman for many years.
Jim was a kind, soft-spoken humble gentleman who quietly helped the HSOV and animals in so many ways.
Jim never sought the limelight nor did he expect or seek praise for what he did.
Jim managed to find time to drive transports when there were dogs and/or cats who had the opportunity to
go to rescue groups. Jim and his best buddy, Fred Blake, were a great team and looked forward to those road
trips together. Often they would come back at the end of the day and tell us about a shelter- or rescue facility
they had toured. Fred passed away in the Spring of 2009, and Jim continued driving ‘solo cross country’
transports without his friend . We’re sure that Jim and Fred have teamed up again and are volunteering to
drive transports across the ‘Rainbow Bridge’ 
We had the opportunity to present Jim with an
engraved plaque shortly before he moved to
North Carolina which read:
JAMES BALDINGER
Thank you for your years of service.
Many animals are leading happier lives
due to your dedication to HSOV.
We extend our heartfelt sympathy to Jim’s
wife, Alayne, and their children. Jim’s family
remembered his love for our shelter and has
suggested memorial donations for the HSOV. We
are providing the link for his complete obituary:

Writing Our Thank You Notes
Thank you to the Marietta High School HPAC [Health Professions
Affinity Community) Club for their fundraising event during the
Sternwheel Festival in Marietta Ohio to benefit the HSOV. This
wonderful group of high school students (along with their advisor Kim
Miller–Depue) worked many hours during the Sternwheel Festival
weekend (September 9-11, 2016) as they manned two parking lots on
Third Street and collected parking fees to raise money for our shelter.
Once again these enterprising young men and women truly amazed
us! They collected $2000 in donations which they presented to the
HSOV. The MHS/HPAC students also participated in our 2016 Wags &
Whiskers Paws Walk on September 25th and many were accompanied
by their family dogs.
Thank you to Marietta Boot Camp for hosting a “Pound Party” for the
benefit of HSOV animals on Saturday September 17, 2016. Attendees
brought donations of flea medicines, Purina brand food for our dogs/
cats, and non-clumping kitty litter. Marietta Book Camp staff delivered
a truck load of supplies the following day 
Congratulations and a big THANK YOU to Green Meadow Veterinary
Hospital (3000 State Route 26, Marietta OH) on your 40th Anniversary
and for inviting HSOV to join in your Open House on Saturday,
September 17, 2016. We appreciate the wonderful care that Green
Meadow doctors and staff provide for our HSOV dogs and cats (often
on short notice).
Thank you to Original Pizza Place (231 Second Street, Marietta OH)
for their ‘Raise Some Dough’ bi-monthly fundraisers which were held
on the second Tuesday during the months of February, April, June,
August, October, and December 2016. The HSOV received 15% of the
total collected receipts for the day of each of those fundraisers 
Several HSOV dogs were accompanied by their favorite volunteers and were privileged to attend an adoption event at
S&P Harley Davidson (80 Thunder Road, Williamstown WV) on Saturday, September 24, 2016. S&P collected monetary
donations (in addition to pet food and supplies) from their clientele and proceeds/donations were split between both
area shelters (HSOV and HSOP). Thank you S&P Harley Davidson  All of our dogs had a super afternoon and their
‘dates’ did as well  
The HSOV Wags & Whiskers Paws Walk was held on Sunday, September 25, 2016 at East Muskingum Park, Marietta
Ohio. Thanks to Teresa Cunningham, Celeste Ridgway, Jamiann Voshel, Becky Johnston, Deb Ryder, Kelly Goedel and
all of the volunteers and board members who worked to make the 2016 Paws Walk memorable as well as profitable.
And a special thanks to everyone who attended and brought their dogs (and one special kitty)! The 2016 Paws Walk
raised approximately $2600 for the HSOV. Highlights of the Paws Walk are included in this issue.
Thank you C&C Toyota (Jim Cobb) for your donation of $2,500 to the HSOV! Toyota Corporate will also match this
amount. C&C Toyota/Jim Cobb have been wonderful supporters of our shelter for many years 
A big THANK YOU to The Station Lounge & Grill (595 Joe Skinner Road, Belpre Ohio) for collecting donations and
supplies for the HSOV during their ‘Chili Cook-Off’ event on Sunday October 9, 2016. We were overwhelmed with
the generosity of your patrons when you presented us with cash donations totaling $777 and a carload of supplies
for our dogs and cats  Thank you Becky Johnston (HSOV Board Member/Treasurer) for collecting the donations and
delivering them to the shelter.

Thank you to the American Legion (Williamstown WV) for your
continued support of the HSOV and for inviting us to host our Spayghetti Dinner Fundraiser at your location on October 16, 2016. And
thank you to the committee members who planned/organized this
event (Shelly Kidd, Kelly Goedel, Deb Ryder, Becky Johnston, Jamiann
Voshel, and Michele Reed) This fundraiser netted approximately $800.
We had a special guest who joined
us during our HSOV Volunteer
Orientation on Sunday, October 16th.
Carrie Roe (who served many terms
as HSOP Board of Directors President
and has worked tirelessly for HSOP in
many capacities) visited our shelter
to evaluate our volunteer orientation
presentation. Carrie provided some excellent suggestions for improvements to our
program. Carrie said she was very impressed with HSOV and would be sharing some
of our ideas with the Parkersburg shelter. On behalf of HSOV (Linda Perry, Brenda
DeWees, and Ginger Eubank), we wish to thank Carrie Roe for sharing her time and wisdom with us 
Thank you JS Detailing (26450 State Route 7, Marietta OH) for inviting the HSOV to your 1st Annual Barktoberfest on
Saturday, October 29, 2016. Several volunteers and their doggy ‘dates’ participated in a mini-adoptathon and thoroughly
enjoyed the Halloween costume contest.
Thank you Dr. Roberta Haught and the staff at Colegate Woods Veterinary Hospital for the Pumpkin Decorating
Fundraiser which you held for the benefit of the HSOV during the month of
October 2016  (Clients donated $1 to vote for their choice of the prizewinning pumpkin). We loved seeing the artistic/creative talents that your staff
displayed. We appreciated the donation you made for the HSOV animals 
 And a sincere thank you for the great care you give so many HSOV dogs and
cats each week ❤
Thank you to the students at Phillips
Elementary School (Marietta OH) for
the money they raised for our shelter
animals! HSOV Volunteer Ginger
Eubank and Beagle “Hobo” visited
the school on December 20, 2016 and enjoyed a huge ‘group hug’ from the
children. The students LOVED “Hobo” and the feeling was mutual 
The 8th Annual “They Light Up Our Lives” Fundraiser was held during the
month of December 2016. Thank you to Nancy Mendicino and her committee
for organizing and coordinating this event.. Thank you to American Flags &
Poles (for displaying the Christmas tree with white/colored lights to honor/
memorialize the pets in their store window) and to ARC Resin, Marietta
Office Supply, Marietta Times and the businesses who handed out the donation forms. And a heart-felt ‘thank you’
to the anonymous donor who matched contributions again in 2016. A total of $2,652 was donated to the HSOV.
Congratulations to Susan Wallfert who was the winner of the drawing for two tickets to the 2017 HSOV FurBall.
Thank you to WeLovPets for their “Pet Photos With Santa” fundraiser in December 2016 and to Dirt Candy Photography
for sharing their time/talents by taking pictures of the pets. WeLovPets presented a donation of $720 to the HSOV for
this fundraiser. WeLovPets does so many nice things for our shelter, and we also want to thank them for the adoptathon
which they hosted for us on October 8, 2016.

Writing Our Thank You Notes
Thanks to these three lovely young ladies (Williamstown WV
Elementary School third graders) for thinking of the HSOV during the
holiday/Christmas season. They collected both monetary donations
and supplies in order to help the dogs/cats who are in need. All three
girls have a great love for animals and were excited to help the shelter.
The girls sold HSOV tags for $1 to hang on the fundraiser Christmas
tree and donated shelter items were placed beneath the tree. Thank
you Sarah Corbett and Susan Knopp for your role in this heartwarming
project and for delivering the donations to our shelter 
Our Holiday Business Window Fundraiser was held during the month
of December 2016. Several local businesses and veterinarians offered
to help us with this new idea. Holiday cards featuring a dog and cat
in a Christmas hat were available for a nominal $1.00 donation fee.
Contributors personalized them with names of their pets, and the
cards were displayed in their storefront windows or on the walls of
their shops/offices. Approximately $850 was raised for the shelter.
Marietta College Students held a unique fundraiser for
the HSOV. These innovative young men and women
cleverly utilized dog bowls to collect cash donations
from friends and raised $442 for the shelter!
Thank you to Jamiann Voshel for thinking of the HSOV
in conjunction with the Sunday December 4th .. Holiday
Vendor/Craft Show at Best Western Hotel, Marietta OH
on Sunday, December 4, 2016. Donations and supplies
were collected for the HSOV animals that day and were
very much appreciated.
Over The Moon Pizza & Pub (170 Front Street, Marietta OH) held their “Three Dog Nights of Christmas” (a benefit
concert for the HSOV) on Friday, December 9, 2016. Price of admission was a donation (either cash or supplies) for our
shelter  Thank you Over The Moon for your generous support!!
HSOV Fundraiser “Coach Purse Raffle/Santa Paws Bingo” was held at the American Legion (Williamstown WV) on
Sunday, December 11, 2016. Thanks to everyone who attended and/or worked on this event, we raised more than
$3000 for the HSOV.
As reported at the January 2017 HSOV Board Meeting, our Fundraising Committee raised a phenomenal $70,000 during
the 2016 calendar year!! Thank you Jamiann Voshel and all of your committee members/volunteers who made this
possible. [Insert a standing ovation and round of applause here for a job well done] ❤
Our newsletter thank-you notes would not be complete until we gave recognition to our wonderful HSOV Kennel
Technicians and Humane Officers who take fabulous care of the dogs and cats in our shelter on a daily basis. They
are there for our animals 365 days a year including holidays, and (much like the postal oath), “Neither rain, nor snow,
nor sleet, nor hail keeps our kennel techs and humane officers from their appointed rounds.” These individuals give
the dogs/cats the love, socialization, and TLC that they give their very own pets. And our Humane Officers (Misty and
Todd) are not shy about being the voice for animals who cannot speak but need their help. Please join us as we express
our thanks and appreciation to: Brianna Artist, Misty Carpenter, Rennelle Casto, Steve Dickinson, Clyde Duffey, Todd
Hallock, Ted Laskowski, Michelle Ruud, Devon Stout, and Katelyn York.

Celebrating The Life Of
“Chelsea”
“Chelsea” was a beautiful white/
black kitty who came to the HSOV on
September 13, 2013 (and that isn’t a
typo)  “Chelsea” spent 2 months in
a cage before being granted ‘Official
Shelter Mascot Kitty’ status. She became
the self-appointed quality control kitty
in charge of checking softness of blankets and bedding
in our laundry room  Her 3-year laundry career had
a ‘rags to riches’ ending when she was chosen by Three
Sisters Rescue to travel to their rescue on September
8, 2016.. And she found a permanent home within a
few weeks  
We celebrate Chelsea’s life and good fortune and the
639 HSOV kitties who were adopted/rescued from

January 31st or 30 days after the dog becomes 3 months old.
Licenses are available at the Washington County Auditor’s Office, 205
Putnam Street, Marietta OH (Monday-Friday 8:00am-5:00pm) for a cost
of $16.00 Late registration will increase the fee to $32 if purchased
after January 31st. Application forms may also be downloaded on their
website: www.washingtoncountyauditor.us
You may also purchase 2017 dog licenses/tags at the HSOV during our

11:00am-4:00pm) for a cost of $16.75. We provide this service as a
convenience for anyone who wishes to stop by the shelter for dog tags.
Facebook Pages:
Humane Society Of The Ohio Valley
www.hsov.org
Having a current dog tag on your dog’s collar is very important to help us
reunite you and your beloved pet in the event he/she becomes lost and
ends up at the shelter. The shelter staff or dog warden will contact you
and ensure that your lost dog will be held for 14 days before it is made
available for adoption. We also scan for microchips. Your veterinarian or
the HSOV can provide microchipping. We provide this service at the low
cost of $20 (for both dogs and cats) during normal hours of operation.
