There is never a down time for the arts! The upcoming months have a whirlwind of cultural activities, both at Huntington Arts Council and throughout Huntington. Our Grants for the Arts program panel deliberations are continuing, and the awards will be announced shortly. HAC was excited by the response this year, showing a 40% increase in applications! I think this proves the richness and breadth of the arts on Long Island. Our Arts in Education Journey Program now has a Greek Chest available for our Journey partner school districts to incorporate into their curricula. Once again, HAC will offer Get With the Program(s), a series of professional and technical development workshops to assist artists and arts organizations [See page 5]. The exhibits in our Main Street Gallery feature several different shows beginning with our juried photography show The Human Condition. Other shows include a Celebration of Women’s History Month featuring works by four women artists with strong points of view, our annual High Arts Showcase featuring the best of our JOURNEY Program partner schools, Into the Deep, a collaboration with The Whaling Museum and Education Center of Cold Spring Harbor, and our annual Members Show [See Page 9] Of course, plans are already under way for the 2017 Huntington Summer Arts Festival. Our next issue will showcase the Festival. In the meantime, the Huntington Tulip Festival will take place with family performances on the Chapin Rainbow Stage, art exhibitions, lectures, demonstrations and much more. I encourage everyone to participate in the arts however you choose to do so. Look through the calendar of cultural events and find something to enjoy. See some of the marvelous performances; visit a museum or gallery; create something! The arts enrich our lives. Please let them enrich yours. Our 2016 Auction On Main – Annual Art Auction Fundraiser was a huge success. This year with over 50 pieces of artwork by as many artists, the support of local businesses, and friends of the Huntington Arts Council we exceeded our financial fundraising goal. Taking place over a three week period in November and December, the event opened and closed with a gallery reception attended by artists and friends alike. It is due in part to everyone’s ongoing support of this fundraiser that we are able to bring the Exhibition Program to the community. Starr Public Relations Manager Haylee Chancellor Office Assistant Arts in Education Chairperson For information on advertising please contact Huntington Arts Council at 631-271-8423 Letter From The Supervisor Dear Friends: Huntington’s distinction as the birthplace of Walt Whitman – frequently acknowledged as one of our country’s greatest poets – is just one aspect of Supervisor Frank P. Petrone our community’s distinguished literary heritage. This heritage spans from being the home of Jupiter Hammon, who in 1761 became the nation’s first published African-American poet, to fostering contemporary poets such as Northport resident George Wallace, named in 2003 as the first Poet Laureate of Suffolk County. As April is National Poetry Month it is fitting that we celebrate this distinguished heritage by recognizing some of Huntington’s newest poets. From 7-9 p.m. on April 26th Walt Whitman’s Birthplace will host in cooperation with the Town of Huntington a special event in honor of teen poets from our community. This award ceremony and poetry reading will recognize those teens whose poems have been selected this year for public display in the Town’s “Poetry for the HART” Public Art Initiative, a program developed in cooperation with Teenspeak and other youth and arts agencies within the community. These teen poets will have the opportunity to share their winning poems at a reading led by an adult poet mentor. Afterward, these winning poems printed on colorful placards will join those of previous years in gracing the interior of buses in the Town’s HART system. While these youthful words of humor, reflection, and sometimes profound insight are enjoyed by more than 260,000 riders annually, they can also be found online on the Town’s website at www.HuntingtonNY.gov/HARTpoetry. Please join us for this special event in celebration of our community’s literary heritage, which remains a living art form created by our friends and neighbors that still enriches our lives today. Sincerely yours, Frank P. Petrone Supervisor Town of Huntington Mark Cuthbertson Town Councilman Eugene Cook Town Councilman Staff News Opportunity: Advertising Salesperson Long time Huntington Arts Council Arts in Education Coordinator Peggy Low recently moved on from the organization. Huntington Arts Cultural News - Winter/Spring 2017 Issue - Page 7 GREEK Culture added to the JOURNEY Program! 2017 Long Island Grants The Arts in Education JOURNEY Program remains relevant, fresh and unique amongst in-school arts programs. The Huntington Arts Council is proud to announce a long awaited addition of Greece to our JOURNEY Discovery Chest loan program. The Huntington Arts Council is pleased to announce that the 2017 Long Island Arts Grants has had its best year as far as our records go back. With 313 interested applicants attending the mandatory grant workshops, and 117 applications submitted from Nassau and Suffolk County non-profit organizations, individual and teaching artists. The Arts Council is also delighted to see a predominant increase in applications from Nassau County to the Decentralization regranting program. The Greek cultural artifact chest is the vision, hard work and dedication of Northport-East Northport teacher Fran Bertos and JOURNEY coordinator Peggy Low (pictured above). Fran had envisioned the addition of the Greek chest to the existing Discovery chest inventory over 5 years ago. Currently, the Discovery Chest program offers chests of cultural artifacts in the following cultures: Africa, Ancient Egypt, China, India, Latin America and Native America. Fran’s passion, knowledge and first hand understanding of classroom teacher’s needs has led to the completion of this community supported project. Fran researched artifacts and traveled to Greece to fill the chests with treasures for students and teachers. In each of the two Greek chests available are clothing, examples of ancient Greek culture, Greek national products, and samples of art, musical instruments, texts and an extensively researched manual. The manual includes artifact descriptions and lesson plans for classrooms K-12 grades. School districts that participate in our JOURNEY program can have unlimited access to the Greek chest at the beginning of 2017. This chest aligns with current units in New York state social studies curriculum, comes with a teacher’s manual (written by Fran Bertos) and has cultural artifacts in each chest. There are 2 Greek chests and as with the other chests in our inventory teachers and administrators can call the Arts in Education coordinator to reserve free use of the chest for two weeks. Sam Miller, Pam Praetorious, Marc Courtade, Kay Sato, Beth Levinthal On Thursday January 12, the Huntington Arts Council hosted a reception in our gallery as we celebrated the addition of the Greek culture to the JOURNEY Program. HAC Executive Director Marc Courtade, Arts in Ed Coordinator Peggy Low, Board members including President Sam Miller, Kay Sato and Beth Levinthal were joined by an enthusiastic and supportive crowd. Thank you to everyone who came. Some special guests included Fran and Stelios Bertos, Reverend Fr. Elias (Lou) Nicholas of St. Paraskevi Greenlawn, Joanne Raia and Antonia S. Mattheou from Town of Huntington Clerks Office as well as George and Toula Haralampoudis who’s support and advocacy for this project are immeasurable. The Greek cultural artifacts were on display along with a wonderful array of delicious Greek food. Thank you to Fran for her homemade baklava and to Steve Soulellis of Mediterranean Snack Bar Huntington for donating dinner. Page 8 - Huntington Arts Cultural News - Winter/Spring 2017 Issue 2017 Huntington Summer Arts Festival Opens June 27, 2017 The weather outside may be frightful, but Performing Arts Director John Chicherio is working hard on creating another exciting and “delightful” roster of artists for the 2017 Huntington Summer Arts Festival. “I think of it as weaving a wonderful tapestry of music, dance and entertainment,” says Mr. Chicherio. “We can’t disclose artists until we have signed contracts, but there will be lots of great music, theatre and dance as always. You can count on an eclectic mix of superbly talented headliners & emerging artists from across the U.S. and around the world, including a number of Grammy winners!” The festival has been a Huntington cultural highlight each summer for more than 50 years. It is the region’s most extensive and varied summer festival and has helped earn Huntington’s reputation as the cultural capital of L.I. The 2017 This Fall Huntington Arts Council expanded its reach and ability to serve the arts community. Three workshops were added in towns that had not yet been visited by the Decentralization program bringing the total up to nine. These three new locations included Port Washington at the Port Washington Library, Smithtown at the Smithtown Library (Main Building) and Hempstead at the African American Museum of Nassau County. Huntington Arts Council also saw a break down in barriers for teaching artists, as a new strand in the Creative Learning granting opportunity allowed for artists to now visit after school programs and communitybased centers to work with students of all ages. As the funds are being determined by our panels over the next couple of months, the Council is excited by this year’s crop of applications that will be sure to culturally enrich our greater Long Island community. Notifications to the recipients will be made by March and we will celebrate with a reception at a later date. Grant opportunities are available annually for both arts and cultural organizations and individual artists residing in Nassau and Suffolk Counties. Grants range from $500$5,000 dollars. The funds are made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA) Decentralization Program. To find out further information about this program, refer to our website www.huntingtonarts.org under the Grants for the Arts section. edition will open on Tuesday, June 27 and continue six nights a week to August 13. In addition to a superlative roster of touring artists and ensembles, we present all your favorite local and regional ensembles like the Huntington Community Band, the Northport Community Band, the L.I. Dance Consortium, Plaza Productions and the Broadhollow Theatre. “We are especially pleased to bring back David Stewart Wiley and the new L.I. Also look for exciting Jazz and a new edition of Coltrane Day, World Music artists, as well as great folk and Americana artists at the Huntington Folk Festival in collaboration with the Folk Music Society of Huntington.
