IMPACT OF NHPRC IN CALIFORNIA The National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC) promotes the preservation and use of America's documentary heritage essential to understanding our democracy, history, and culture. Since 1964, the NHPRC has awarded $207 million to 4,900 projects in all 50 states and special jurisdictions. Total Cost of Projects supported by NHPRC in California: $31,911,069 - Total Project Funds $15,050,721 - Direct Federal Grants $16,860,348 - State and Local Contributions Projects of Special Value to the State of California: The NHPRC has played a unique role in supporting historical PUBLICATIONS and RECORDS projects of special value to California including: Establish a Network of Archives in California – support to establish or enhance archives at such institutions as Stanford University, University of California, California State University, Pepperdine University, Pomona College, the American Film Institute, San Francisco State University, Japanese American National Library, and many others. State Archives Enhancements – funding to support the California State Archives in preserving records, enhancing access, preparing for emergencies and managing electronic records. Publishing Historical Records – funding to research and publish multi-volume editions of the papers of such noteworthy Americans as Martin Luther King, Jr., Marcus Garvey, and Emma Goldman. Local records in California – support to help organize, preserve, and facilitate the use of county and local records throughout the state. Access to the Papers of Diverse Americans – project and/or academic press support for the papers of such historical figures as Mark Twain, Lucretia Coffin Mott, Samuel P. Chase, Thaddeus Stevens, Charles Sumner, John Muir, and Robert Andrews Millikan. Native American Heritage – funding to appraise, process, publicize, and make accessible records pertaining to under-documented groups including the Cher-Ae, Hoopla Valley, Paiute, and Wiyot tribes. Support includes training Native American archivists in maintaining tribal records. Preserving Special Format Collections – funding to preserve, arrange, describe, and make accessible photographs, audio recordings, film, and other special format archival materials, including over 3.25 million photographs at the University of California’s Bancroft Library and audio tapes of lectures by Martin Luther King, Jr., Aldous Huxley, and Frank Lloyd Wright. Documenting California’s Heritage – support to document California’s diverse heritage, including sound recordings of the Monterey Jazz Festival, San Francisco Maritime Museum collections, 20th century street scenes of San Francisco and other cities, Japanese American’s experiences during and after WWII, and Vietnam Veteran’s experiences.
