2008-09 ANNUAL REPORT
FROM THE PRESIDENT
Dear Members and Friends,
T
his is our Annual Report issue, which is always a time for reflection on the past and a
view to the future.
What a difference a year makes. As I wrote this letter a year ago, Lehman Brothers was
collapsing. No one could see the economic shock that hit the world, creating a time that
tested us all—as individuals, as government and corporate entities, and as students of
history. How did we fare?
First, I would like to compliment and thank you the members. You stood by us.
Unlike the experience at many other not-for-profit institutions, your numbers did not
decline and your contributions did not decline. Nearly 4,000 of you are listed later in this issue—representing all 50 states and
15 countries. You showed us that you support our efforts to provide thousands of people from across the world with an educational
experience which brings light on the most important chapter of American history.
Second, our visitation did not decline. We provided a history lesson and a memory for a lifetime to people from all 50 states
and 51 different countries. People who enter our doors are diverse in age, backgrounds, origin, and (especially) knowledge of the
Confederacy. The core of our mission is to provide an educational experience for all of them, and this Annual Report highlights
the many ways that we accomplished this mission. From my many conversations, letters, and e-mails with you members, this
educational experience is why you support us.
Third, a lot of effort on the part of the staff and the Trustees brought the Museum to a new level of excellence. Instead of
retreating, we advanced. We saw record numbers—in programs provided beyond our doors, in the interns who studied inside those
same doors, in the teachers who attended our summer Teachers Institute, in the people who reached us over the internet, in the
images and lessons provided on our website. All are testaments to hard work by us and great acceptance and appreciation by our
audiences.
We do more than wait for people to come to us in Richmond. Take a look at our website, for example, at the programs that we
offer to people who think that it is important to learn more about the Confederacy. Almost 40 programs are listed, up from fewer
than 10 several years ago. In the past couple of years, our staff has made presentations from Kansas City and St. Louis to Minneapolis,
from Providence, to Houston and Austin and Jacksonville.
But I started this letter by saying that the global economy melted down. How has that affected us? It has slowed our expansion
plans significantly. A year ago, we were saying that we thought we could open our first expansion site in Appomattox in the spring
of 2011 and follow that up rather quickly with sites in the Fredericksburg region and Fort Monroe. We will not keep to that schedule.
Large capital contributions come principally from large individual donors and foundations. Both have seen marked declines in
their wealth, and most have pulled in their support for new ventures.
We have made significant progress in our fundraising and tremendous progress in our architectural and exhibit planning, but
we have not reached the financial point yet that would allow us to begin construction in Appomattox. We will report more progress
in the near future. And we are grateful that our long-term plan—doing these projects sequentially rather than all at one time—allows
for us to lengthen or shorten our time lines without jeopardizing the basic strategy.
In the meantime, we are looking forward to the Sesquicentennial commemoration of the Civil War. Here in Richmond, we have
already participated in two large conferences, both hosted by Trustee Ed Ayers, the President of the University of Richmond. And
I hear from many of you that your communities are only now beginning to think about what they can or should do.
We hope that we can help you prepare for the increased national attention that the 150th anniversary will bring. Many of you
will have friends who will say, “Why do you study the Confederacy or the Civil War?” or even “Why do you care?” We hope we
can help you answer those questions with insights provided from your visits, from our website, and from this Magazine. You can help
us in this regard. Send people our way. Tell them about us. Show them the Magazine. We feature education in this issue. You too
can be a part of our educational efforts.
I close the letter with heartfelt thanks to you for supporting us, and I look forward to the next year of being
Your most obedient servant,
S. Waite Rawls III

his deceptively simple question is one
that President and CEO Waite Rawls
hears most often from potential donors and
supporters. The first time he heard it, his
answer logically focused on the Herculean
efforts of his small Education staff to handle
the hoards of school groups that descend on
the Museum every fall and spring. But pondering the question, he quickly realized that
“education” is more than school groups and,
in fact, that nearly everything that the
Museum does is education, properly understood. What the Museum does about
education is what the Museum does year
round. It is the basis of our mission and why
our members support us. Because of this
revelation, Rawls and the editors decided to
devote this Annual Report issue of the
Magazine to the subject. What did we do
with your support this year—and what do
we do every year? We educated.
Apropos of an annual report, let’s review the
Museum’s year as an educational institution.

he Museum’s fiscal year begins on July 1. The children are out of school, so the
Museum’s Education staff, Kelly Hancock and Sean Kane, can take a well-deserved
break from the busy spring. Well, not really. Late June and now early July is the season
for the annual Teachers Institute, which requires months of advance planning.
Teachers Institutes are educational experiences for a select group of teachers who apply
for the privilege. The Institute affords teachers an opportunity to “re-charge their batteries,”
to immerse themselves in the substance of the subject they love. It also gives them ideas
and materials that they can take back to the classroom and enhance their pedagogy.
Throughout the school year, the Museum educates students directly. The Institute is
one of the ways that Museum education has a “multiplier” effect by reaching those who
educate others.
The July 2008 (14th annual) Institute recognized two important bicentennial birthdays
and was entitled “Davis and Lincoln: Reflections of a Divided Nation.” Sponsored by
the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities and funded as part of the “We the People”
initiative of the National Endowment for the Humanities, the 2008 Institute was able to
bring in such guest speakers as Dr. William J. Cooper, Jr., and Dr. Gerald Prokopowicz,
biographers of Jefferson Davis and Abraham Lincoln, respectively. The program attracted

teachers from six states and also featured lectures and tours by
Museum staff and hands-on exercises using the Museum’s collections—an element that differentiates this from other
teachers’ programs.
When schools are out, the professors can go out and play—in
the archives, that is (well, at least it keeps them off the streets).
The summer and winter breaks are when the Museum’s Eleanor
S. Brockenbrough Library sees many college professors and graduate students working on books and dissertations. There they join
genealogists and amateur historians who make the necessary
appointments to use the Library’s valuable collections of original
manuscripts and records. Our research materials contribute directly
to the most important books published about Confederate and
Civil War history—the books that educate students of all ages,
whether enrolled in schools or learning on their own.
Summer is the high season for visitation at The Museum of the
Confederacy and at many American museums. It is, therefore, the
season when we do the most education. More people view our
exhibits in this travel season than at any other time of the year.
And what else are the exhibits and tours if not education?
The artifacts themselves educate people about what southerners
of the 1860s wore, carried, used, read, wrote, and experienced.
The accompanying text and labels put the artifacts in the wider
context of the Confederacy and the war and stimulate thought
about the complexity of human history.
Beginning on July 1, 2008, we made available to our visitors
for a nominal cost audio wands that offer a guided tour of the
Museum’s venerable flagship exhibit, “The Confederate Years,”
adding to the visitors’ educational experience.
Guided tours are the only way to see the restored White House
of the Confederacy, and those tours are, in effect, our most popular
educational program. As an article in our spring 2008 Magazine
described, White House tours are among the best historic house
tours in the nation. They educate visitors not only about President
Jefferson Davis and his family, the slaves and servants in the White
House, the Confederate government, and the social life of wartime
Richmond, but also about the many original and period furnishings
and decorative arts that they see.
The Museum’s living history program is also in high gear during
the busiest summer weekends. Visitors cluster around a living history
volunteer—or a group of volunteers—loaded for bear with often
extensive collections of reproduction clothing and accoutrements.
Visitor Services Supervisor Bryce VanStavern (who serves as the
Museum’s volunteer coordinator) and other staff members interview
volunteers about their programs to insure that they are accurate and
educational. Many museum visitors learn best from personal communication or from demonstration, and the living history interpreters
provide an effective complement to the exhibits and tours.
In an effort to add a new dimension to the Museum’s exhibits
and to make the collections accessible in a new way to more people
on the World Wide Web, we launched the Wilkinson Vodcast
Series in the late summer of 2008. Scripted, filmed, and produced

by our own staff, the Wilkinson Series consists of short videos
that provide in-depth looks at specific artifacts or artifact groups.
Available on the Museum’s website at this writing are vodcasts
about Brig. Gen. Turner Ashby; Lt. Col. Heros von Borcke;
southern women’s war work; emancipation and the AfricanAmerican vote after the war; amputations and artificial limbs;
balloon reconnaissance; famous Confederate horses; and a two-part
vodcast documenting Museum volunteer Ozzie Raines’ cut-away
model of the CSS Richmond. The vodcasts are effective teaching
tools for the video generation and are also intended to promote
visitation to the Museum and research in the collections.

programs on such topics as the Common Soldier, the AfricanAmerican Experience, Life on the Home Front, and Civil War
Medicine. The tours and the programs are keyed to SOLs, which
make them attractive to time-constrained teachers—and keeps
Sean’s phone ringing.
In the fall of 2008, Director of Administration, Programs, and
Special Events Linda Lipscomb was busy coordinating programs for
students at the other end of the demographic spectrum. Following up
the success of a series of one-day Elderhostel programs, “Confederate
Citizens: A Civilian Look at the Civil War,” that she planned
through the national Elderhostel office (see the spring 2008
Magazine), Linda arranged for Museum staff members to conduct
classes at the Chesterfield Life Long Learning Institute.
So popular did those classes prove that the Institute scheduled a
separate “Museum of the Confederacy Series,” which included such
offerings as “To Take Tea,” “Jefferson Davis before the Civil War,”
“First Ladies of the Civil War,” “The Battle of the Wilderness,”
“Civil War Art and Photography,” “Medical Practices of the Civil
War,” “The Development of Ironclad Ships of War and the Battle
of Hampton Roads,” and “Victorian Christmas Traditions.”
Clearly the Museum serves its own educational mission by
cooperating with an organization that describes itself as “a learning
community of peers who are committed to ongoing education and
their own intellectual development.”
The Life Long Learning Institute classes provide the Museum
with educational outreach opportunities—presenting programs to
groups in the wider Richmond community that staff members have
developed for presentation at the Museum. In fact, staff members
routinely present talks to Confederate and Civil War interest groups,
historical societies, and civic organizations around the country. In
2008-2009, our staff educated “students” in such groups in a dozen
states from Texas to Florida to Pennsylvania to Connecticut.
FALL
useum Education Specialist Sean Kane knows when schools
are back in session when his phone begins to ring more
frequently. He is the contact for teachers who want to arrange
field trips for their classes. Museum education staff conducts
programming for over 5,000 students (in grades 4-12) a year and
are actively involved in the development of classroom materials,
ranging from resource packets to lesson plan units designed to
target specific Virginia Standards of Learning (SOLs).
While a majority of our student visitors are from Virginia
schools, we have annual visits from schools from across the
nation: Arkansas, Texas, Illinois, Arizona, California, and other
states, and a growing number of international students from Italy
and France.
The Education staff (Sean Kane and Educational Programs
Coordinator Kelly Hancock, reinforced for larger groups by
Abdur Ali-Haymes and other Visitor Services staff) not only
tour school groups through the galleries and the White House
of the Confederacy, but also offer a variety of hands-on educational

Bringing outstanding lecturers to Richmond is a major part of
our educational mission. Since 1998, the Museum has ushered in
the autumn with the Elizabeth Roller Bottimore Lecture. Made
possible by an endowment from the Roller Bottimore Foundation,
the lecture, since its inception, has been cosponsored with and
hosted by the University of Richmond’s Department of History. It is
one of several long-standing partnerships that the Museum has
enjoyed with other educational institutions.
The Bottimore Lecture has established a reputation as a forum for
cutting-edge scholarship about the Confederacy and the Civil War
and for discussing difficult issues from multiple perspectives. Such
award-winning authors as Drew Gilpin Faust, George Rable, David
Blight, and Bruce Levine have shared their research in progress.
The 2008 (13th annual) program was a panel discussion on “The
Treason Trial of Jefferson Davis” and probed the U.S. Government’s
case against the Confederate president and why it was eventually
quashed. It follows in a tradition of panel discussions that include
“The Battle over the Battlefields” (which was broadcast on C-Span)
and “The Confederacy in the 21st Century.”
For 20 years, Museum staff and members have known to circle
on their calendars the weekend before Thanksgiving as “Relic
Show” weekend. In November 2008, the Central Virginia Civil War
Collectors Association sponsored for the 29th time this signature
event that has also involved and directly benefited The Museum of
the Confederacy (see the summer 2009 Magazine). The CWCCA
not only donated proceeds to the Museum for conservation projects,
but gave the Museum several tables to display a few artifacts,
offer educational programs, and introduce Show attendees to
the Museum.
Just in time for the 2008 Christmas shopping season, the
Museum announced the availability of its first custom-produced
compact disc, “The Sound of the Original Rebel Yell Lives!” Thanks
to the survival of a recording of two Confederate veterans individually giving authentic “rebel yell” and to miracles of digital
reproduction, the CD allows the listener to experience the sound
of an entire army giving the famous yell.
The “Rebel Yell” CD is an enormously successful example of
museum product development on every level. Not only did it prove
to be The Haversack Store’s best-selling item for 2008-2009, but
it has educated thousands of people about a legendary piece of
Confederate history and influenced the interpretations of living
historians and reenactors.

House and participate in children’s programs than on any
other day.
In addition to the open house, the Christmas season also
brings more intimate educational programs that have explored
the traditions of “Christmas in the Confederacy” and more
specifically “Christmas with the Davis Family.” As with most of
the Museum’s educational programs, these allow participants to
enjoy up-close and personal exposure to artifacts and documents
from the collections.
The dead of winter is traditionally the slowest season for
museum visitation and often a dead time on public program calendars. For that very reason, we have learned, our members and
patrons are receptive to programs offered in the winter months.
This was particularly evident with the wild success of “The
Civil War in 3-D,” offered on January 22, 2009. More than 80
people crowded the Moody Court to don funky 3-D glasses and
see images of 1865 Richmond as they were meant to be seen.
Visitors to the Museum on February weekends would hardly
guess that winter is a slow season. For the last several years, the

the open house is a gift to the community. It is typically the day

on the weekend for a day of hands-on educational activities that
help them fulfill the requirements for their Folk Arts or Local
Lore badges.
On another February 2009 weekend, visitors to the Museum saw
more than a few brawny men in buzz-cuts conferring earnestly with
each other in the lobby. Major Greg Thiele of the U.S. Marine
Corps attended one of the Museum’s Kriegsspiel (war game) public
programs and requested that Director of Collections and Senior
Curator Robert Hancock hold a session as a training exercise for
other Marine officers. For eight hours, 20 Marines, including colonels
and majors re-fought the Second Manassas Campaign, hampered

occurs on a Saturday close to Presidents Day in late February—
uses a format that allows investigation of themes of historical
significance through lectures and an often lively panel discussion
that are as educational as they are entertaining. This year’s topic,
playfully entitled “Generals Behaving Badly,” explored the serious
subject of “character and command” and offered compelling
presentations by historians Hunter Lesser, Robert K. Krick, John
Quarstein, and Ed Bearss.
The all-day symposium is the latest incarnation of a late-winter,
early-spring lecture series that dates back 30 years. The “Evening
Series Lectures” began in 1979; since 1998 the series and the
symposium have been cosponsored with and hosted by our Court
End neighbor, The Library of Virginia.

So successful did the organizers deem this exercise that they

is now adding the training program to its regular curriculum

February means Valentine’s Day, and the Museum has used
the occasion to educate people about love in the time of war.
The Museum’s collections are rich in wartime love letters and
valentines and home-made items of affection, which have been
featured in exhibits and publications. Those collections also provide the centerpiece for the popular program, “Hearts at War.”
Participants learn about the history of St. Valentine’s Day and
home-made and commercially-produced Valentines.
Anticipating the creation of the Museum’s new system site,
“Hearts at War” was the first of several planned programs to be
held in Appomattox.
The annual misnamed “Spring Symposium”—which actually

been part of the Museum’s educational mission since 1896. The
Magazine perpetuates and expands upon a Newsletter initiated in
1963. As its budget allows, the Museum also publishes catalogues

“Access to the collections” is the mantra of the Museum’s publications program. Museum visitors read didactic text and labels
while walking through three levels of galleries, and all but the
most avid visitors can only absorb so much before fatigue sets in.
The Magazine offers members an opportunity to study and learn

easy chairs. The articles with their full color photographs provide
in-depth information about artifacts, their history, context, the
people who owned or used them, and about the Museum’s efforts
to preserve and conserve them.

Early June finds the Museum feting the recipients of its annual
literary awards. The Jefferson Davis and Founders Awards are
among the oldest and most prestigious recognition of scholarship
about the Confederacy and the Civil War. Decided by panels of
leading historians, the awards are the capstone of the Museum’s
involvement with scholarship. The relationship begins with
assisting research in the Brockenbrough Library and continues in
the form of lectures and other programs.
June 30 marks the end of the Museum’s fiscal year, and June
30, 2009, the end of the period covered in this annual report.

The coming of spring weather makes possible some of the
regular outdoor programs that are part of the Museum’s event
calendar. The popular “Jefferson Davis’ Richmond” walking tour
resumes in March after a four-month hiatus. Dean Knight, the
tour’s creator, teaches participants about the “Court End” neighborhood and nearby Capitol Square as they appeared in the 1860s.
Spring also means Mothers Day, which provides the occasion
for one of the most popular new programs, “To Take Tea.” Library
Manager Teresa Roane teaches about the customs and traditions
of tea in the Victorian era. Participants also get a close-up look
at examples from the Museum’s collections of tea pots and cups,
tour the parlors of the restored Confederate White House, and
complete their visit with tea and light refreshments.
The tea program attracted the attention of a Richmond area
coffee house, which recruited Teresa and Development Director
Diane Willard and Development Associate Emily Souder to
offer an educational program for mothers and daughters.
The return of warmer weather finds the Education staff figuratively strapping on their battle armor. It is high season for school
field trips. Other Museum staff and visitors weave their way
through clumps of students consulting over gallery search games
or dodge guided school tours in the exhibit galleries. The School
Group Season peaks in May and extends well into June.
The rhythm of the school year calendar determines not only
who is in the Museum’s galleries, but also who is in the Museum’s
offices. The first of May finds the staff bidding an affectionate
farewell to the latest class of “school year” interns and preparing
to welcome the summer interns.
Undergraduate and graduate student interns are an invaluable
source of support staff for The Museum of the Confederacy.
Most of the interns are from local colleges and universities and
earn college credit for working as many as 150 hours during a
semester. Others come from farther a field (the summer 2009
class included interns from schools in Maryland, North
Carolina, Ohio, and Arizona) and work essentially as volunteers.
Internships provide important practical training for students
interested in working in the museum profession. Over the
decades, a very high percentage of our professional staff began
their careers as interns, often at the Museum.

his letter is our customary report to you as the “investors” in the Museum, in
which we focus on the financial health of your institution, accompanying selected
information from the annual financial statements and list of donors.
In the fiscal year 2009, revenues of $2,754,748 exceeded expenses of $2,419,173,
producing a net surplus of $335,575 and a net surplus of $246,422. While this is our
third straight year of net surpluses, it is a surplus that needs further explanation
(below).
Let’s look first at the revenues. In a year in which the economy tanked and many
museums saw significant declines in attendance, membership, and donations, the
Confederate Memorial Literary Society was almost flat year over the year; you are to be
congratulated on this major accomplishment. Door fees were flat, as a modest price
increase offset a small decline in visitation. Haversack sales (net of cost of goods sold)
were also flat, with an increase in internet sales offsetting lower purchases on site.
Membership dues and annual fund contributions declined year over year, due entirely
to the timing of two large gifts. Adjusting for those gifts, membership and annual fund
donations were also close to flat.
Given the state of the economy, we are thankful for our flat revenue performance in
most operating categories.
There were two revenue areas, however, that were not flat. On the negative side,
last year, 17 percent of our revenues ($380,000) came from state support; but this year
state support was zero because of the significant state budget deficits. On the positive
side, the quiet phase of the capital campaign to support the expansion to Appomattox
yielded significant results, despite the economy, with written pledges of more than $1
million being committed, and indications of intentions to give exceeding that number.
To understand the financial statements, it is helpful to understand the required
accounting treatment under which the CMLS operates. Many of our gifts have come in
the form of pledges payable over a five-year period. We are required to record the entire
pledge as revenue if the pledge is written, and we create a pledge receivable asset category
for the entire amount (less a discount factor for multi-year pledges). Cash payments will
reduce the pledge receivable amount, but the revenue has already been recognized. We
cannot recognize any oral pledge as revenue, as this is considered an intention to give,
not a commitment to give. Revenue from oral pledges is recognized only when the cash
is received. As a result, you will note that there is an increase in the assets—both current
and non-current—that represents the $700,000 in unpaid written pledges for the
capital campaign.
On the expense side, we have continued to run a very tight ship. Customary operating
expenses for all areas except the expansion increased only $4,500 year over year. No
raises, no headcount increases, minimal travel and reduced advertising—all have been
a way of life for museum employees. The increase in expenses has come almost completely
from the strategic expansion planning and its associated fundraising costs, which
totaled $277,000 for the year.

We have reported earlier about the excitement of this planning—to bring far more
artifacts in front of far more people, using far better technology to aid in their education
and understanding. But we have adopted a couple of important rules: The contributions
received for the expansion should not support the day-to-day operations of the museum;

approximately $200,000 and ended the year with a small draw of $49,927 from our
B
bank line of credit.
The statement of financial position was slightly worse year over year. As noted
above, we have a small amount of debt, and our investments declined from $2,715,744
to $2,336,404. This 14 percent decline could have been far greater if we had not taken
C
steps several years ago to be primarily invested in the most conservative area of the
markets—short-term bonds. Our current “spending policy” is to appropriate and spend
D
only the dividends and interest from our investments, and the lower interest rates in
bonds produced a smaller amount of interest this year (only $69,000, down from
E
$93,000 last year).
We would note that we have very conservative budgeting and investment policies.
Our Board of Trustees carefully oversees the financial reporting and monitors financial

We note with utmost appreciation the service of Carlton P. Moffatt, Jr., who has

to details, his love of the White House, and his devotion to our mission have all helped
to produce a remarkable turn around in our operations and planning during his tenure.
We are all in his debt.
Finally, we thank the Board Committees and their leaders for their hard work and
strong support throughout the year.
Sincerely,

Roll of Honour
T
he Museum of the Confederacy’s Roll of Honour pays tribute
to the extraordinary generosity of its donors who have contributed at least $1,896 (a figure commemorating the year the
Museum opened) to Membership, Annual Fund, the Flag
Conservation Program, White House Conservation Program,
and other special fundraising projects.
The name “Roll of Honour” pays homage to an ambitious
project undertaken by the Museum’s founders late in the 19th
century. The ladies of the Confederate Memorial Literary Society
sent out blank forms to veteran’s camps and United Daughters
of the Confederacy chapters asking for the biographical information on the brave men who fought for the Confederacy. The ladies’
tireless efforts resulted in more than 50,000 biographical entries
accumulated into 346 volumes that are housed in the Museum’s
Eleanor S. Brockenbrough Library.

THE FUTURE IS NOW!
BY
O.T. CROWTHER, Vice President for Advancement
I
n my first message to you a year ago, which we
titled “Funding the Future,” I told you about a
capital campaign and its value to the Museum.
A year later those values are being realized and the
momentum and urgency to attain them have
escalated. Accordingly, I have titled this message
“The Future is Now.”
Since July 2008, we have been in a campaign
phase that development professionals refer to as the
“silent phase.” The silent phase is the time taken
to study the needs of the campaign, assess resources, test the
climate, and set interim and long-term goals. When we announce
the campaign formally, we will set goals that are clearly stated
and achievable. Once we announce the campaign it will be a
dash to the finish.
The term “silent” does not imply secrecy or any reticence to
raise funds. Indeed, the silent phase is quite the opposite. There
is no secret about the Museum’s intent to create the museum
system. There is no secret about the Museum’s desire to increase
its endowments for the White House, its collections and library,
and the education programs. There is no secret about the Museum’s
need to increase its operating revenue.
All of these targets will require substantial funding. All of these
goals are critical to the future of The Museum of the Confederacy.
The Board and the staff are diligently developing the standards
which will adequately fund each of these initiatives and which will
reach each goal. As we set each of these targets, we will develop
the processes and messages to tell the world what we are doing,
how we’re doing it, and how they can help.
We are not ready yet to announce specific campaign initiatives,
but we already know that the success of our future and any plan
must include the opening of The Museum of the Confederacy at
Appomattox. Success in Appomattox will motivate even more
32 THE MUSEUM OF THE CONFEDERACY MAGAZINE
people who want to see the Museum grow and
flourish and who want to be part of something
exciting, innovative, and bold—a once-in-a-lifetime achievement. The opening of the museum site
at Appomattox represents a dramatic announcement
of our reentry into the national dialogue and the
largest contribution to Civil War scholarship and
tourism during the 150th observance of the American
Civil War.
But the plans we’re making now for the Museum
are not just for the Civil War Sesquicentennial. That observance
will only last for four years. The Museum of the Confederacy has
been in existence for 120 years, and we are preparing for the
next 120! What we are doing now and what we will share in the
future will signal the start of that journey. We have started to
create that future.
The past 18 months have not been the most fertile time for
fundraising. We all have met personal and business challenges. The
economic future is still uncertain. All of these factors have slowed
giving, but not eliminated it. The members and friends of the
Museum have been most generous. We must rely on that continued
generosity and find ways to expand the number of participants.
We will continue to direct you to events and opportunities
for information and engagement as we make our plans and finalize
our goals. We will announce interim financial targets and gifts.
When we announce our final goals, that will be the prologue to
final success.
But today we see the future we are seeking and it is already
upon us. Every successful step we take toward the future makes our
dreams more attainable. Our opportunity to define the future is now.
Your opportunity to help create the future is now, by helping to
increase the membership rolls and the annual fund. Let’s not delay
because the “Future is Now.”

Civil War Wives: The Lives and Times of Angelina Grimké
Weld, Varina Howell Davis & Julia Dent Grant by Carol
Berkin. The wives of abolitionist Theodore Dwight Weld,
Confederacy President Jefferson Davis, and Union commander
Ulysses S. Grant were unrepresentative in their marriages but
typical in their struggles to use their sharp minds to break free
of the era’s restrictions on married women. They pointed the
way to what women’s lives might—and eventually did—
become. (361 pages, 9.5” x 6.5”, hardcover) – Item #736:

A Southern Spy in Northern Virginia: The Civil War Album
of Laura Ratcliffe by Charles V. Mauro. As the Civil War raged,
Confederate Brig. Gen. J.E.B. Stuart entrusted a secret album to
Laura Ratcliffe, a young girl in Fairfax County, “as a token of his
high appreciation of her patriotism.” A devoted southerner, Laura
provided a safe haven for Rebel forces, along with intelligence
gathered from passing Union soldiers. This is a fascinating look
at the covert lives and relationships of civilians and soldiers during
the war, kept hidden until now. (223 pages, 9” x 6”, paperback)

The Chancellorsville Campaign: The Nation’s High Water
Mark by James K. Bryant II. Chancellorsville was the true high
water mark for both the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia
and the Union Army of the Potomac. The campaign would be the
Confederates’ greatest battle, though it came at the cost of losing
Gen. Stonewall Jackson at the height of his military success and
public popularity. Although the Confederacy prevailed at Chancellorsville, “Fighting Joe” Hooker used the defeat to institute a multitude
of reforms in the Army of the Potomac, which paved the way for
the hard-fought victory at Gettysburg and heavily influenced the
Union winning the war. (159 pages, 9” x 6”, paperback) – Item

The Fredericksburg Campaign: Drama on the Rappahannock
by Edward J. Stackpole. Originally published in 1957, Edward
Stackpole’s history of this 1862 battle—probably the most onesided Confederate victory of the war—is reprinted here in a
second edition with subsequent scholarship taken into account.
It includes a commentary by Scott Hartwig analyzing Stackpole’s
Blue and Grey Cookery: Authentic Recipes from the Civil
War Years by Hugh and Judy Gowan. Cooking in the past
depended upon a mixture of intuition and common sense. Few
recipes had been written down prior to the 1860s, and measurements as we know them today were unheard of. The recipes
found in this book hopes to return some of the “art” involved
with cooking. (40 pages, 8.5” x 5.5”, paperback) – Item #708:

War events. They encourage readers to “daily gird yourself with
truth as you prepare to face today’s battles by spending a little
quiet time reading Devotions for Warriors.” (380 pages, 8.75” x 6”,
paperback) – Item #743: Retail $21.99 – Member Price $19.79

challenged by later historians. (312 pages, 8.25” x 5.5”, paperback) – Item #713: Retail $12.95 – Member Price $11.66
Cry Havoc!: The Crooked Road to Civil War, 1861 by Nelson
D. Lankford. Most historians agree that a degree of violent civil
strife in the U.S. was inevitable by 1861. However, that does not
mean that the actual war this nation endured, leaving 600,000
dead, had to occur. Could the conflict have been limited to
brush fires of violence until a workable compromise was achieved?
The events that led to the final rupture in 1861 were the consequences of specific decisions by specific men. Had they chosen
differently, Lankford suggests, war on a massive scale could have
been averted. (308 pages, 9.25” x 6.25”, hardcover) – Item #712:

missions and were involved in underground activities for both sides. Includes
discussions of codes and ciphers used during the war. (320 pages, 9.25” x 6.25”,

God Rest Ye Merry, Soldiers: A True Civil War Christmas Story by
James McIvor. Recounts Christmas celebrations during the early Civil
War, with an emphasis on how the holiday united opposing soldiers.
