The Scarlet Ibis Webquest.
This is a short story rich in symbols and symbolism. It isn’t so much a story about a bird but it is more
about a young, delicate boy and how he thrives or perishes in his environment. Please read the short
story before you begin the web quest paying attention to the richness of descriptive language.

Read the poem, “ First Lesson” in the web quest.
Answer the questions about the symbolism of floating. To be answered on the printed
worksheet.
Hand in your completed worksheet/questions and essay question in a booklet with a title page. You
have two classes to finish this.

In an essay of 250 words or more discuss the importance of symbolism in James Hurst's, "The Scarlet
Ibis." Be sure to define the symbol (i.e. the scarlet ibis, dead scenery) and discuss how the symbolism is
important to the main idea of the story. Be sure to discuss how this story is really about discovering
yourself and your true character.
