Home of the RAPTORS OCTOBER 2013 Principal: B. Butler Vice –Principal: P. McIntee The Elementary Progress Report On October 29, your child will bring home their Elementary Progress Report. The format was created after years of consultation with parents, teachers, principals, and students across the province. Although it looks much like the Report Card, this report has a very different intent. The purpose of the Progress Report is to share early and specific feedback on your child's development of work habits and learning skills as well as his/her progress towards achieving the curriculum standards by the end of the school year. Traditionally, when reporting to parents about their child’s progress, teachers have prepared by looking back over the work done. The teacher evaluated your child’s progress from the beginning of the school term to the current point in time, and reported on the highlights of achievement as they compare to overall curricular expectations. Teachers continue to report on Provincial Term One and Term Two Report Cards in this manner. Reporting on the Progress Report is about looking forward. The purpose is to set the course for the learning journey ahead. Based on the evidence teachers see, as well as what teachers know about learning at this grade level, the report communicates the path your child is on towards achieving the grade level expectations by the end of the year. For students who are on a modified Individual Education Program, the teacher uses those modified goals when determining whether a child is progressing well, progressing very well, or progressing with difficulty. All subjects that are part of your child’s program in the first weeks of school will be assessed according to the following indicators: Progressing Very Well: In the first weeks of school, evidence shows that the student is demonstrating consistent progress and is on track to meet and/or surpass the provincial standard set for the end of the year. Progressing Well: In the first weeks of school, evidence shows that the student is demonstrating consistent progress and is on track to meet the provincial standard set for the end of the year. Progressing With Difficulty: In the first weeks of school, evidence shows that the student is experiencing difficulty towards meeting the provincial standard set for the end of the year. For subjects in which your child is Progressing With Difficulty, the teacher will discuss specific next steps plans needed for success. We look forward to partnering with you and your child for a year of great learning and growth. After a couple weeks of fund-raising efforts our school surpassed our goal of $1 per student and raised $490.25. Super job to all Richmond students, staff and community. Students participated in the Terry Fox Run by walking around our school field with banners/ signs and murals promoting our school’s interest in our annual Terry Fox Run. Also a big hit this year was our “Terry Fox Tug of War Contest” between students and teachers. It was a great day all around and we certainly look forward to next year’s run. WAY TO GO RICHMOND! Edge Imaging will be here on Friday, November 1st to do retakes for individual photos only. How Long Must My Child Stay Home When Sick? Yet majestic is exactly what happened on September 23rd at the Welland Soccer Club. After 50 minutes of hard fought action, and eleven penalty shots- Connor Burke's "shot heard 'round the Niagara Peninsula" ended a historic game versus Glynn A. Green (GAG), that resulted in the Richmond St. Jr. Co-ed Soccer team as the Region 2 Champions. Earlier in the day, they handily defeated Diamond Trail and Princess Elizabeth 5-0 and 4-0 respectively. Coaches Mr.Currie and Mr.Garrah were proud of how the students were ambassadors of Richmond St., showing sportsmanship, fair play, and respect towards all competitors. Members of the team included: Melanie A., Hayden D., Avery F., Ella F., Connor G., Rylie G., Madison M., Lauren S., Elisa W., Destinee W., Blake B., Blayden B., Connor B., Andie L., Dylan M., Logan M., Julian R., Regan W., Grace D. and Julia G. Leaving School Property Just a reminder, the crossing guards are scheduled until 3:20 p.m. To ensure the safety of all students at the end of the school day, please encourage your children to leave school property as quickly as possible so they cross with the crossing guard. Students are to arrive home first before they decide to go play with their friends!
