A Quarterly Update On Family Service Of The Piedmont, Inc.
You Helped Jessica Find Her Smile
When six-year-old Jessica* first came to Family Service
of the Piedmont’s Children’s Advocacy Center (CAC)
she was terrified. She spoke softly and only when necessary.
She would not make eye contact and was very untrusting.
She was afraid her mother
would find out she was
telling what her mother’s
boyfriend had done.
For over a year, her
mother’s live-in boyfriend
had taken his hostilities
out on Jessica. She had
suffered significant injuries
and on multiple occasions
required medical attention.
Her mother lied and
covered up the abuse
so teachers and medical
staff never intervened.
Eventually, however, a
report was made to the
Department of Social
Services, who referred
Jessica to the CAC.
Message from
the High Point
Foundation Chair
Child Victim Advocate Cristin Hassell insisted
that Jessica see a doctor, who confirmed head trauma,
although her mother continued to deny the abuse.
After CAC staff had completed their forensic interview
process withJessica, her testimony eventually led to child
abuse charges and the subsequent arrest of her mother
and the boyfriend. Jessica was given permission to live
with her father.
Guilds Celebrate
a Great Year
Hassell remembers, “Once I told her the judge said her
mother couldn’t be around her until he said so, and that

mom’s boyfriend couldn’t be around her at all, she was like
a totally different child. She gave a huge sigh of relief and
kept looking skeptically back and forth between me and her
dad and asking “Really?” and “Are you sure?”“
“Then,” Hassell remembers, “she smiled so big
and started jumping up and down hugging me and
firing off questions to her dad so fast he hadn’t even
answered one question before she was asking more.”
“Could they have pizza for dinner? Could they go to
the park when they got home? Was he going to buy
her more clothes and toys or was he going to get
her stuff from mom’s house? Would Santa know
she lived with him now?”
Once she realized she was safe, Jessica seemed to
become a totally different child.
Through counseling at Family Service, attending
the Children’s Witness-to-Violence group, and her
father’s love, she is healing. Jessica still carries the
scars from those injuries, but she hasn’t let them
stop her from being a cheerful and outgoing child
full of energy.
“There were a lot of obstacles to making sure things went the
way they were supposed to on this case,” summarized Hassel.
“I devoted a large amount of time to it for months, a lot of
it afterhours, to make sure this kid didn’t fall through the
cracks again. But every minute of it was worth it for that
one moment standing in the courthouse hallway, watching
the anxiety and fear disappear from that girl’s face that day.
It’s one of those things I won’t ever forget.”

BB&T Lighthouse Project Supports the FFRC
The Fairview Family Resource Center (FFRC), located at the
Southside Recreation Center in High Point and a program
of Family Service of the Piedmont, provides community-based
programs and services for families, children and individuals
living in the Fairview Elementary School district. The FFRC
conducts a full range of educational programs and activities for
parents and children. The services they provide include after
school and summer activities for school-age children, parenting
groups and community projects.
Recently volunteers from BB&T’s Triad Corporate Center
traded their professional attire for tennis shoes and work gloves,
rolled up their sleeves and got to work helping the FFRC with a
long list of projects.
The FFRC staff was amazed at all the volunteers accomplished.
Program Manager Andrea Dalporto said, “They did more today
than we would have been able to accomplish in one year.
The programs and services we provide the community are so
important, but our staff is small and our resources are extremely
limited. We are so grateful for their help. They have transformed
the center!”
Dalporto sums it up, “Thank you BB&T volunteers for the
tremendous contribution you have made, for your willingness
to give and for your support of our mission.”

Message from the President
“The key to abundance
is meeting limited
circumstances with
unlimited thoughts.”
- Marianne Williamson
As we wrap our fiscal
year, Family Service
of the Piedmont
remains strong to
its commitment to
provide high-quality,
high-impact programs for our community.
However, like most nonprofits, sustainable
funding continues to be our greatest
challenge. Fortunately, we have been
successful in meeting this challenge by
utilizing a multi-prong approach: adhering
to a strong and dynamic strategic plan;
diversifying our program funding streams
as much as possible; communicating a
strong community impact statement for
our programs; and focusing on increased
donor engagement in order to increase
fundraising dollars.
As a result, we enter the new fiscal year
with a renewed sense of purpose and drive.
Our programs, like the Children’s Advocacy
Center and the Fairview Family Resource
Center, continue to restore hope and
stability to our community. Our staff,
who are the life-blood of the agency,
continue to go above and beyond the call
of duty in their unwavering dedication to
our clients and our mission. And our
volunteers and donors continue to support
the positive impact Family Service has in
our community. All of this creates an
atmosphere of abundance and allows
Family Service to thrive!
As we head into summer, I hope you will
join me at the 7th Annual Jamestown Pig
Pickin’ on August 6th for an evening of
BBQ, southern dishes, a silent and live
auction and music by U.B.U. This is always
an enjoyable way to support Family Service!
Additionally, our Annual Meeting will be at
noon on September 26th at the Sedgefield
Country Club. A former client will speak
about how our services impacted his life and
I will share the state of the agency, as well as
present our annual Julia B. Nile For Love of
Family Awards. Both of these events should
not be missed. See you there!
We thank the following for generously supporting our programs and services.

Message from the Greensboro Foundation Chair - Kim Holleman
"For it is in
giving we receive"
-Francis of Assisi
Wow! It has been an
exciting year for the
Family Service of
Greensboro Foundation.
Congratulations to the
dedicated Board, the
tireless hard working
Guild and the incredible
staff. It has been my
privilege to serve as Chair
of this organization and to
work with this amazing team. This has been our most
successful fundraising year and you made that possible!
Each of our board members participate in a variety of
ways by giving to our Annual Campaign, serving on
committees and sharing their invaluable expertise. One of
the crowning achievements we experienced this year was
due to the hard work of Lynn Black and Robert Ketner
who led the efforts to raise the endowment to $1,000,000
and name our Washington Street facility, the Families
First Center, in honor of past, present and future staff of
the agency.
This year the Annual campaign, chaired by Lynn & John
Black and Elizabeth & Matthew Rankin, surpassed the
goal and raised an incredible $97,000! The Greensboro
Oyster Roast, co-chaired by Leslye Tuck and Missy Akin,
with Honorary Chairs, Leslie and Robert Ketner, was
another huge success raising $258,000! This Oyster Roast
was made possible by so many amazing volunteers and
sponsors that believe in the mission of Family Service.
Thank you to VF Corporation, the Oyster Roast
Presenting Sponsor and to Helen Brooks for allowing
the Oyster Roast to be held on the lawn of her beautiful
home. Thank you to Carolyn Walters, Pearls of the Oyster
Roast chair, for creating a special event for our top sponsors
and to Margaret and Don White for opening their home
for the pre-party.
Board members Lisa Bullock and Vanessa Carroll also
supported Family Service by hosting fabulous events in
their home. While Tina Forsberg and Jim Weeks used
their expertise to lead Strategic Planning.
The Guild of Family Service of Greensboro is involved
in all of the foundation’s fundraising. This year’s Guild
President Diane Conterno-Neese and the fabulous
Guild members surpassed all limits! The Big Hair Ball
was outstanding and raised $134,000! This event, with
Woodruff Family Law Group as the Signature Sponsor,
was led by Indira Lindsay-Roberts, Lex Kulman, Donna
Perkins, Mary Ingram and the Honorary Chair Daniela
Helms. Under the outstanding leadership of Lex Kulman,
the auctioneers Duke and Bird, a heartfelt message from
Carolyn Woodruff and the generosity of our audience,
Fund-a-Need raised $27,000 in 10 minutes! This event
takes a great deal of volunteers to make it successful. In
addition to the many Guild volunteers, thank you to the
Junior Guild of Family Service models, as well as for the
hair, make-up and fashion designers responsible for the
outrageous and sublime fashions featured.
Other Guild events included Sip N' Shop lead by
Charisse Kleinman, Beth Kattman, Diane Pusch and
Cyenthia Barker. This fun social and shopping event
raised $30,000 this year! Thank you Leslie Thomas for
chairing the festive Holiday Happening, Judy Reynolds
for leading Change-ing Lives and Carla Robinson for
heading up Bundles of Giving. The 2nd Annual Clay
Smith Family Appreciation Day & Gratitude Walk,
co-chaired by Magz King and Amanda Feder, was a fun
awareness event for the community. This affair was held in
memory of our dear Clay Smith, former foundation board
member and past president of the Greensboro Guild.
Congratulations ladies, on an amazing year and thank you
for the countless volunteer hours and dedication!
This organization of dedicated volunteers and staff work
diligently to help improve the lives of those in our
community experiencing domestic violence, child abuse,
mental health and substance abuse issues and financial
instability. These folks believe in the mission of Family
Service; empowering individuals and families to restore
hope, achieve stability and thrive through quality support
services, advocacy and education. It is our clients’ success
stories that touch our hearts and give hope for a better
life. Over 17,000 children and adults were served this
year. Thank you to the Family Service of Greensboro
Foundation Board of Trustees; Lindsey Auman,
Lynn Black, Lisa Bullock, Vanessa Carroll, Diane
Conterno-Neese, Daniel Craft, Donald Dibble, Tina
Forsberg, Anita Graham, Beth Harrington, Daniela
Helms, Ron Johnson, Mojgan Jordan, Sterling Kelly,
Kim Ketchum, Robert Ketner, Thais Lewis, Indira
Lindsay-Roberts, Matthew Rankin, Leslye Tuck,
Donald Vaughan, Carolyn Walters, James Weeks and
Ellie Yearns. Your generosity improves the lives of those
in our community.
Super Heroes Soar
Super heroes soared around High Point University
raising over $23,000 for Family Service of the
Piedmont. This is the third year that the Guild of
Family Service of High Point and HPU’s Kappa
Delta sorority partnered for the Super Hero Dash.
“This event was such a great
success with over 250
participants,” said Heather
Schwartz, member of the
Guild and co-chair for the event.
“We enjoyed working together
with the Kappa Deltas from
High Point University to plan
this event, and it was wonderful
to see the interaction between
HPU students and members of
the High Point community.”
The race offered a 5k run for
adults and a 1k run for children
10 and under. The event also
included a bounce house, games,
face painting and food trucks.
Thank you to our sponsors!

Message from the Hight Point Foundation Chair - Elizabeth Finch
American humorist
and Washington Post
columnist, Art Buchwald
once said “the best
things in the world
aren’t things.” I agree
and in fact would go
one step further and
say the best things in
life are people. I have
always felt that people
can have a successful
and happy life if given
the support and direction that they need.
Family Service of the Piedmont gives that
support. They bring hope to those they touch.
Hope that they can become a wonderful parent,
hope that they can get out of an abusive situation,
hope that they can become drug free, hope that
they can become financially independent and on
and on! I am honored to work with an organization
that has tremendous impact in our community and
to serve with dedicated and generous people.
I would like to congratulate and thank Janice
Kubinski and Stephanie Ross for the marvelous
job they did serving as co-chairs of the 22nd Annual
High Point Oyster Roast. Not only was it a fun
and beautiful evening, but they raised a record
breaking amount of over $176, 800! And of
course, our sincere appreciation to Dr. Lenny
Peters for hosting the event on his property and
Barbara and Paul Coughlin for opening their
beautiful home for the Pearls of the Oyster Roast
pre-party.
Heather Fielden was also very successful leading
the Guild of Family Service of High Point in
raising awareness and funds this year. The Guild’s
Holiday Soiree, chaired by Kerie Beth Scott and
Amanda Kaluzny, was enjoyed by over 100 guests
and raised more than $17,000. The Super Hero
Dash, an event co-presented with the Kappa Delta
Sorority at High Point University was chaired by
Guild members Heather Schwartz and Donna
Cumby. This family event is becoming a popular
annual occasion and raised more than $23,000.
Our Annual Campaign, under the leadership of
John Bencini and Cathy Procton, was the most
successful ever and raised more than 10% over our
goal of $70,000. The High Point Foundation
Board of Trustees were also treated to lunch by
Piedmont Board Chair, George Ragsdale, for
being the first to reach 100% participation!
It’s the people we volunteer and serve with that
have made it possible for Family Service of the
Piedmont to offer over 30 programs, serving more
than 17,000 children and adults last year. Thank
you Kay Miller, Bill McGuinn, Julie Shamburg,
Alyce Hill, Beachy Allen, Nancy Amos, Mark
Clark, Matthew Cochrane, Debbie Cottam, Moo
Moo Councill, Tyler Covington, Frosty Culp,
Louise Foster, Jeff Horney, Jane McAllister, Matt
Nowell, Rosalyn Pauling and Michael Smith for
your dedication and generosity. It has been my
pleasure serving with you.

Family Fun Day at the Southside Recreation Center
The Fairview Family Resource Center (FFRC),
a program of Family Service of the Piedmont,
joined other local agencies recently in support of
National Child Abuse Prevention & Awareness
month with a Family Fun Day at the Southside
Recreation Center. More than 200 children and
parents came out to enjoy the beautiful weather,
games, activities and a free hot dog dinner.
The event was a collaboration with the Boys &
Girls Clubs of High Point, Piedmont Health
Service and Sickle Cell Agency and supported by
the United Way of Greater High Point and the
City of High Point. “Over the years, the FFRC
has worked hard to get at least 120 participants for
this annual event. This year all of our hard work
paid off by exceeding our annual goal! All of this
could not have happened without the great help
from the partnering agencies and volunteers,”
shared Donita
Williams, FFRC
Interim Education
Coordinator.
protective factor in the prevention of abuse,
while also sharing what community resources
are available,” summarized FFRC Program
Manager Andrea Dalporto. “It is a wonderful
collaborative effort!”
The dinner
(including cooking
and cleaning up)
was provided by
Premier Federal
Credit Union.
“We are grateful for
the opportunity to be involved with the
Fairview Family Resource Center Family Fun Day,”
said Lori Thompson, President/CEO of Premier
Federal Credit Union. “Giving back to our
community aligns with the credit union philosophy
of People Helping People and participating in an
event like this provides us with the perfect chance
to do so. Our employees thoroughly enjoyed being
involved and helping local families. We appreciate
all that Family Service
of the Piedmont does
and
are proud to take part
in their service to our
communities.”
“This annual event is
a great way to bring
families together.
