Art Smart: Dance/creative movement
and Music
To incorporate arts outside, I brought out the radio
for the children to dance to. We played many
different songs, some which gave instructions such
as Skip to My Lou, and others where the children
could create their own dance moves. The children
danced around the playground. Some children
joined hands while dancing, and at one point we
had a giant dancing circle going on.
We learn to coordinate movement to music. We
learn to develop imaginative skills using our
bodies. We learn to express ourselves through
dance. We learn to appreciate and sing songs
from varied genres and cultures.

Art Smart: Visual Art
Today was art day. We asked the children what kind
of art they would like to do. Many children said
drawing while others mentioned sand art. At the art
table, we put out colored sand and glue. The
children used their creativity to create unique works
of art. At our small square table, the children used
markers and crayons to draw pictures and get well
cards for Miss Shanna.
We learn to use art materials and tools purposefully
and creatively. We learn to experiment with visual
media and materials. We learn to critique and make
observations about artwork and illustrations.

Science Rocks
During morning meeting, we reviewed what we had
learned about the planet Mercury. We then began
learning about the planet Venus. We learned that
Venus is the brightest planet in our solar system. We
learned that it is the hottest planet in our solar system
because the heat gets trapped by its atmosphere
(big science word). We learn that Venus is the
second planet from the sun and that it takes Venus
243 days to orbit the sun!
To continue our solar system project, the children
helped do some research using our classroom
computers. We needed to paint our paper mache
Mercury. In order figure out which color to paint it,
I helped the children do research. They typed in
the “What color is the planet Mercury?” When we
found the results, Cash read the paragraph for us
and we learned that Mercury is dark gray with
many craters. At the science center, the children
helped make gray paint by mixing together black
and white paint. They used bubble wrap to paint
the planet to give it some texture.
