After reading Chapter 8, complete the following activities.
1. Vocabulary building: Find synonyms for the
following words






shrivelled
recoiled
careering
thrust
bundle
raging.
2. Word classes: Read the sentence below and identify two verbs, one adverb, two adjectives and
one pronoun.
She finished lamely, blushing. That speech had been difficult to make, but she was
determined to get through it.
3. Semi-colons: Read the following sentences from the chapter in which the semi-colon has been
removed and add them back in, in the correct place.
a. She was to be paid by being given her board and lodging free there was no money to pay her
a wage.
b. The door of number 45 was open a painted sign proclaimed that W and F Garland conducted
their business there.
c. His eyes were green she hadn’t noticed that before.
4. Spelling: Look again at the words you have just read in Chapter 8 and correct any incorrect
spellings. Beware - not all of them are wrong!

5. Imagery: Find a simile, a metaphor and an example of personification from the chapter.
Write an explanation of why it is effective, what connotations it creates and how it makes you
feel about what is being described
6. Summary: Summarise the events of Chapter 8 using your own words.
