Bringing new levels of comfort to our Ireland - France routes
“I have very simple tastes. I am always satisfied with the very best.” Oscar Wilde
Continuing our tradition of naming ships to celebrate Ireland’s literary heritage (Jonathan Swift 1999 & Ulysses 2001), we are delighted to announce the name of our new
Cruise Ferry to France - Oscar Wilde. This name was chosen to honour Ireland’s most famous wit & dramatist and the many links he had with France. The ship is the most luxurious ever to sail
between Rosslare & France and with bright airy cabins, stylish lounges and a wide choice of entertainment and dining options, brings new levels of comfort to our overnight service.

Ireland has a fine tradition of literature, drama and stage performance and the Gaiety Lounge is
named after Dublin’s famous Gaiety Theatre. Oscar met his wife Constance Lloyd there while
giving one of his popular lectures and many of his most famous works have been staged there.

Following his release from prison in May 1897, Wilde immediately went to France hoping
to regenerate himself as a writer. He settled in the seaside town of Berneval-Sur-Mer,
a resort favoured by poets and painters, near Dieppe in Normandy where he wrote
“The Ballad of Reading Gaol”.

Oscar Wilde spent his last days in the Hotel D’Alsace situated on the vibrant and fashionable
Left Bank of the River Seine. The Left Bank in Paris is renowned for its stylish cafes and
relaxed eating ambience and our Left Bank Brassiere is the perfect place to experience
a real taste of France.
Oscar Wilde was born in Dublin in 1854. His father, Sir William Wilde, was a well-known surgeon
and his mother, Jane Francesca Elgee Wilde, wrote popular poetry and prose. In June 1855,
the Wilde family moved to Number 1 Merrion Square, one of Dublin’s most fashionable addresses.
