PANDAMONIUM! SAVE THE RED PANDA ZOO CHALLENGE
DIRECTIONS
Imagine you are a zookeeper at a zoo that has just built an exhibit to house and protect the beloved Red Panda. Your
challenge is to create a plan to care for, feed, and learn all you can about the Red Panda to help it thrive and remove the Red
Panda from the critically endangered list. Use what you know to answer the following questions.
ZOOKEEPER PROBLEM
ANSWER
Your zoo will receive 2 adult Red Pandas. One weighs 4 kg and the other
weighs 5 kg. What is the combined weight of your new Red Pandas?
4 kg + 5 kg = 9 kg
Each Red Panda will need to eat about 4 kg of fresh bamboo shoots daily to
stay healthy. How many kg of bamboo shoots will you need to feed both
pandas each day?
If one Red Panda eats 4 kg of fresh bamboo shoots each day, how many kg
of bamboo shoots will you need to order for that panda each week?
(1 week = 7 days)
4 kg + 4 kg = 8 kg
4kg x 7 = 28 kg
*Note: Children may add 4
7 times or draw a picture of
4 kg for each of 7 days.
The length of the head and the body of one of your Red Pandas is 60 cm. Its
tail is 40 cm long. How much shorter is the tail than the head and body?
**Challenge: On a separate sheet of paper, make a picture of a Red Panda
that has these measurements.
Each day, a Red Panda spends about 11 hours looking for food in the wild.
If your red Pandas start looking for food at 8:00 in the morning, what time
will it be when they finish foraging 11 hours later?

Congratulations! Your female Red Panda had two babies! The babies were
born 3 days ago. Their eyes will probably open when they are 18 days old.
How many days does your public have to wait to see the baby Red Pandas
with their eyes open?
The Red Panda babies are very healthy! When the first was born, she
weighed 120g each. She is gaining about 10g each day. How heavy will
she be on Day 18 when her eyes open up?
GRADES K-2

18 – 3 = 15 days
120g + (18 x 10) = 300 g
*Encourage children to use
a number chart or base -10
blocks to count by tens to
solve this problem.
