April 8, 2016 Following are this week’s FIDS updates: Good Character Awards. Congratulations go to our Good Character Award recipients for the month of March: Jonathan MacKenzie, Early Learning (lower school), and Egyptia Green, Grade 3 (upper school). We are proud of Jonathan and Egyptia for exemplifying FIDS’s three Rs: Respecting Others, Respecting Your Community, and Responsibility. Closure of Mansur Parking Lot. The Mansur Parking Lot (the parking lot on Terminal Island where we park the school buses) will be closed for renovation beginning Monday, April 18, 2016, and will most likely remain closed throughout the summer. We are currently working on alternate plans for bus drop-off and pick-up and will provide you with an update under separate cover. FIDS’s STEM Fair Expo. FIDS’s Third Annual STEM Fair Expo will take place in the Neff Family Library on Friday, April 22, 2016. Your child’s classroom teacher will be providing you with additional information, but now is the time to start planning. Please note the following: • • Grades Early Learning – 1: Each class in grades Early Learning – Grade 1 will complete one group STEM Project. Grades 2 – 5: Each student in grades 2 – 5 is required to complete his/her own STEM Project. All projects are due on Wednesday, April 20, 2016. Parents may assist their children with their individual STEM projects (Grades 2 – 5); however, part of the judging will be based on each student’s ability to explain his/her project and discuss the results. As such, it is essential for every child to be actively involved in all aspects of their STEM projects. The Sound of Music. Our after-school drama club will be performing the musical The Sound of Music on Friday, May 20, 2016, at Café Tangier. Following is the schedule of performances: • • 10:00 a.m. – Performance for FIDS students and faculty/staff. 5:00 p.m. – Performance for parents and special guests. Out-of-Office. I will be away from FIDS on Monday, April 11, 2016. During this absence, Ms. Nora Eldrageely, Guidance Counselor, will be in charge. FIDS Specialty Camps. FIDS is pleased to offer four week-long Specialty Camp Programs this summer. FIDS has partnered with leading children’s organizations in our community to bring these intimate recreational/learning experiences to our campus. Specialty Camps are being offered in addition to our regular camp program. Each week, between June 6 – July 1, 2016, we will provide students with immersive experiences in particular areas of interest. Specialty Camp Programs capitalize on the Maker Movement, where students are inspired to “create” in a collaborative setting with their peers, learn, and have fun. As a convenience to our families, all Specialty Camp Programs will be held at Fisher Island Day School in the Neff Family Library. During the months of April and May, we will be hosting “teaser” presentations for eligible students by each of our specialty camp partners. The folks from Clay World presented at last week’s morning meeting; individuals from Design Lab presented today. Representatives from the Nutty Scientist will be at FIDS on May 13th; the date for Moon Amie Productions is TBD at this time. The 2016 Specialty Camp Program offerings and registration form are appended to this newsletter.
