Last Saturday September 05th, I celebrated that Mass at 11:00 a.m. There were over 250 people present. They came from different parishes of the Archdiocese. Some of their families are buried at Holy Cross Cemetery. They take the opportunity to visit the graves of the dear departed before or after the Mass. In my homily, I highlighted the fact that those gathered coming from various parishes are from the Archdiocese; that we all belong to the Archdiocese and then to the national Church and to the universal Church. We are all united by Christ and forged into a family and community. We are the body and Jesus is the head. We are all like branches united with Jesus the vine and one another. His life-giving sap flows into our lives. As for the dear departed, I shared with them what our faith so admirably cherishes as its abiding conviction: that God’s everlasting love revealed in Jesus who died for us will lead the departed into the embrace of God forever and ever. On earth, they channeled God’s blessings to us by becoming living sacraments of God’s presence, grace, and love. We can keep the reality of death in the midst of our life, not in a morbid way, but in a faith-filled and liberating way, so as to re-evaluate our priorities and values and rearrange them for the sake of being “rooted and grounded in love,” as St. Paul calls us to do. So life and death are part of our life; let life lead to love; and let death, when it comes, lead us to the fullness of life with God, his angels, and his saints. Holy Cross Cemetery: ‘As the oldest and largest Cemetery in “the city of cemeteries,” Colma, Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery is rich in California history. This historical legacy translates into the important values of tradition, experience, stability and trust. For over 125 years, Holy Cross management and staff have been committed to providing compassionate and responsive service to families during their time of greatest need. Experience fosters understanding and encourages a caring competence. Holy Cross staff utilizes its century of experience with Catholic funeral and burial traditions to build a bridge of hope and consolation for families during their most difficult days. Our longevity embodies a devotion to excellence and a commitment to service that has endured for generations. ‘The foundation for Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery began when Mt. Calvary Cemetery in San Francisco was nearing capacity. Archbishop Patrick W. Riordan looked south of the city in the 1880's to remedy the need for more burial space. In 1886 he purchased 300 acres of the Buri Buri rancho for the new cemetery in what would eventually be known as the town of Colma. Holy Cross opened in 1887 with people complaining that it was “too far from San Francisco”. Archbishop Riordan’s foresight proved correct, as the area developed into San Francisco’s “City of the Dead”. A reporter for the The Monitor concluded that the Archbishop had chosen the site well. “A more suitable place for the burial of our dead would be difficult to find”. The space currently remaining will serve the Catholic Community for another 150-200 years.’ Please do keep Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery in your prayers and give it all the support and patronage you can give. Pope Francis’ Schedule in the U.S.: Please see in this bulletin the schedule of the Holy Father’s visit to the United States September 22nd through 27th. May his apostolic visit kindle in us an abiding love for the Church and a greater appreciation of the office of the Pontiff, the Vicar of Christ, and all that this sacred office stands for in the Church and the world. Let’s keep the Holy Father in our hearts and prayers specially these days. Hopefully, next time he will be able to come to California. Word of God: The gospel we read this Sunday is central literally to Mark’s gospel. From this point on, Jesus moves inexorably toward the cross. Jesus asks: “Who do you say that I am?” People give all sorts of answers about Jesus as perceived by others. But Jesus is keen on our personal answer to this question. Our faith has been nourished by our parents, teachers, priests, nuns, friends, teachers, and others. But we cannot live on borrowed faith. We have to come personal contact with Jesus and come to faith. It is like our tasting food for ourselves. We cannot taste food from others’ descriptions, but we have to taste and see for ourselves. Jesus is to be tasted and experienced and encountered for ourselves personally. Who do YOU say that Jesus is? What does he mean to you in your present circumstances? How would you describe him given your experiences? What names would you give him based on your personal life-journey? Does he make a difference in your life? These are vital questions to answer if we have to live authentic Christian lives. Pope Francis’ Joke: Speaking on Valentine’s Day in 2014 to over 25,000 people to be engaged or married couples gathered at St. Peter’s Square, Pope Francis said: “We all know the perfect family does not exist. The perfect husband does not exist and the perfect wife does not exist.” Then, after pausing as if for comic effect, he added: “Let’s not even talk about perfect mothers-in-law.” The crowd roared with laughter. Reflecting on the Word Twenty-fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time Perhaps it goes without saying that faith, specifically faith in Jesus, is at the heart of Christianity. In fact, the emphasis that Christians place on faith, rather than specific ritual acts of ethical requirements, is a distinctive if not unique feature of Christianity compared with other religions of the world. This is reflected in the pivotal place that Mark’s Gospel gives to Peter’s confession of faith in Jesus as Messiah. It is at this point that Jesus begins telling his followers of his impending death and traveling with them toward Jerusalem. But Jesus makes it clear that having faith in him is not simply an activity that we engage in with our minds; it involves a commitment of our whole selves, soul and body. To have faith in Jesus, it is not enough to say the correct words, as Peter does, but we must embrace Jesus’ fate as our own: “whoever loses his life for my sake and that of the gospel will save it” (Mark 8:35). The Letter of James says that having the right words but not having the actions that go along with them is like telling a hungry person “eat well,” but never feeding him. It is not really a matter of needing to have works in addition to faith. Rather faith, in the sense that Jesus asks for it, is always a matter of a total commitment of oneself to him and to his cause. We do not need faith and works, but rather what St. Paul calls “faith working through love” (Galatians 5:6) - the faith that overflows into love of God and neighbor. For prayerful consideration and discussion ♦ How would I answer the question Jesus asks his disciples: “Who do you say that I am?” ♦ Who are the people that I see as examples of faith working through love? Praying with the Word Lord Jesus, anointed one of God, make our faith in you not merely a matter of words but also of actions, so that our confession of you as Messiah may be truthful. Amen. - from Living the Word Baptisms are generally celebrated each month on the 1st and 3rd Saturday in English and the 2nd Saturday in Spanish. Please call the Parish Office for times and to register. Upcoming baptism dates are as follows: Sept. 19 (1 spot open) Oct. 3 (1 spot open), 10 (Spanish) & 17 (full) Nov. 7, 14 (Spanish) & 21 Preparation classes for parents and godparents are held on the second Tuesday of the month. Classes are conducted in the Pastoral Center from 7:30 - 9:00 p.m. (Adults only please). Please call the Parish Office at 650-588-1455 for specific dates and to reserve your space for the Baptismal Preparation Classes. An Athlete’s Prayer God, let me play well but fairly. Let compeƟƟon make me strong but never hosƟle. Forbid me to rejoice in the adversity of others. See me not when I am cheered, but when I bend to help my opponent up. If I know victory, allow me to be happy; if I am denied, keep me from envy. Remind me that sports are just games. Help me to learn something that maƩers once the game is over. And if through athleƟcs I set an example, let it be a good one.
