WAC Activities Guide Middle and High School Global Learning WACtivity: Sustainable Development Goals
Name ______________________________ Below are the 17 Sustainable Development Goals that the United Nations has set to complete over the next 15 years. Each goal contains a lot of more specific goals that countries will work together to accomplish. Think about how all these goals fit together, and in some instances, how they work against each other. Which solutions are proactive? Which solutions are reactive? Here is a specific goal for ten of the categories: 1.
No Poverty
:
By 2030, eradicate extreme poverty for all people everywhere, currently measured as people living on less than $1.25 a day 2.
Zero Hunger
: By 2030, end hunger and ensure access by all people, in particular the poor and people in vulnerable situations, including infants, to safe, nutritious and sufficient food all year round 3.
Good Health and WellBeing
: By 2030, reduce the global maternal mortality ratio to less than 70 per 100,000 live births 4.
Quality Education
:
By 2030, ensure that all girls and boys complete free, equitable and quality primary and secondary education WAC Activities Guide Middle and High School Global Learning 5.
Gender Equality
: Eliminate all forms of violence against all women and girls in the public and private spheres 6.
Clean Water and Sanitation
: By 2030, achieve universal and equitable access to safe and affordable drinking water for all 8.
Decent Work and Economic Growth
: By 2030, achieve full and productive employment and decent work for all women and men, including for young people and persons with disabilities, and equal pay for work of equal value 12.
Responsible Consumption and Production
: By 2030, halve per capita global food waste at the retail and consumer levels and reduce food losses along production and supply chains, including postharvest losses 13.
Climate Action:
Improve education, awarenessraising and human and institutional capacity on climate change mitigation, adaptation, impact reduction and early warning 15.
Life on Land:
By 2020, promote the implementation of sustainable management of all types of forests, halt deforestation, restore degraded forests and substantially increase afforestation and reforestation globally Choose

of the Sustainable Development Goal categories (focusing on the specific goal listed above). For each one, decide which subtopic (from the Pathfinder brief about Smart Village) is most closely related to that goal. Now, choose two other subtopics and come up with a change in the community in that subtopic which will help us to reach this goal. Example:

Identify one main challenge __
Parents keep students, mostly girls, home from
school so that they may help on the farm Change in the Solution that integrates multiple subtopics: Install selfrun dripline irrigation systems and education programs on how to use and maintain them. This will make it so that parents allow their students to go to school, rather than making them stay home and work on the farms. Greater education for the youth would help further generations; we can solve this by combining education and agriculture. 1)

__________ Other questions to consider in your research and solutions: ● Who is the change coming from? ● How can the solution take into account: anthropology, sustainable, local materials, community voices, and community expertise? ● Do some digging into the UN SDGs website. What is missing here? Are these solutions holistic? ● How similar are these Sustainable Development Goals to the UN’s Millennium Development Goals?
