The number of
awards our team has received
for projects ranging from public
engagement to urban design,
landscape architecture, and
neighborhood planning.
Whether it’s an urban park, a
commercial center, or a residential
neighborhood, we bring together
the places that make communities
feel like home.
Bringing Communities to Life
An urban park in the heart of a bustling downtown. A retail
and business park. A stormwater management system
running through a residential neighborhood. These may
sound very different, but to us the idea is always the same—
we design with community in mind. We transform land into
places that feel like they belong there. We create spaces that
respond to the land and the people who use them. We do
this because we’re a part of the community too, and we care
about the places where we live as much as you do.
Our approach enabled us to create the master plan for
a new urban waterfront. Multiple stakeholders and six
distinct precincts along the river represented many
different, and at times competing, ideas for what the
waterfront should be. We brought stakeholders and
community members together in an extensive engagement
process. As part of that process, we incorporated their
needs into a design that truly belonged to them.
Our approach made sense when a new community required
that all storm runoff be retained and controlled on a small site.
Rather than take away land or create an eyesore, we designed a
stormwater management system that blends seamlessly into
the community’s parks and trails for residents to enjoy.
By thinking this way, we bring communities to life.
Successful communities are created
where design and life intersect.
From urban to suburban,
we bring a sense
of community
to the places
we create.

Transforming Land
Developing land into a residential or mixeduse community or a public space with parks
and trails requires a mix of technical skill
and creative vision, as well as insight into
development. We merge this expertise to
create value for our clients and community.
Our knowledge of the industry runs deep;
we know our communities, the local
political climate, and the policies that
impact a project’s progress so we can guide
you through the development process. And,
we’re with you from beginning to end.
Our surveyors, engineers, and transportation
experts lay the groundwork for
infrastructure, while our planners create
designs using knowledge of local regulations
to navigate approvals. Our environmental
scientists restore and preserve sites.
Our public participation experts engage
stakeholders to build consensus. Our
landscape architects, architects, and project
managers bring designs to life. Together,
we cover all aspects of land development
while balancing what’s important to the
community and the environment.

Picture a vibrant city with trains
crisscrossing neighborhoods and
people traveling smoothly from schools,
businesses, and homes. Now contrast
that with a vast rural area with thousands
of acres of protected agricultural and
environmental resources. Though these
scenarios are drastically different, our
approach to community development
remains the same—enhance the value for
our clients and create cherished spaces for
our communities. Every piece of land is
unique and so is each one of our solutions.

Creates Lasting Communities
When we were presented the challenge to design the
most sustainable athletic field in the world, we took it.
The heavily used natural grass fields in Battery Park
City were destroyed by layers of debris during the 9/11
attacks. They never fully recovered. Our goal was to
rebuild the fields in the most sustainable way possible,
and to reorient them for maximum space; every extra
square foot of green represented another child who
could participate in meaningful outdoor recreation.
We selected artificial turf instead of natural grass. This
type of turf was more durable and long-lasting, and
it was not dependent on water or sun. It also allowed
for field overlap and site flexibility. Our landscape
architects, sustainability analysts, and toxicologists
began with a life-cycle analysis of all synthetic turf
components designed for a 30-year period. We
combined materials to create a unique turf system
that’s not yet available in the marketplace.

rainwater collected in the storage tank we designed for the
drainage system at Battery Park City Sustainable Ballfields,
all of which gets reused on-site.
Our new stormwater design at the park reuses water
for irrigation and decreases impacts to the surrounding
city drainage system. The resulting system will be 100%
recyclable once it’s lived its useful life, and the fields
have been named the most sustainable in the world.
Nestled between skyscrapers and concrete, the new
Battery Park City Ballfields provide a recreation area for
a community that desperately needed more green space.
Everyone is able to learn and play now, from very young
soccer players learning in small groups to adults taking
batting practice in the net-enclosed practice spaces.

When we start a project,
we’re doing more than just
the work we were hired for;
we’re building a relationship
with a client that we want to last.
And, we work just as hard at that.

Relationships to Last
“We believe in being a part of the communities we
develop. Our 20-plus-year relationship with Stantec has
been successful mainly because they believe this too.”
- Rex Jensen, CEO, Schroeder-Manatee Ranch
At 28,000 acres, Lakewood Ranch will be one of
the largest planned communities in Florida when
complete. It will be a new town built from the ground
up, with a timeline that will exceed 40 years. Planning
a community of this size and scale can be daunting,
but we’re able to do it by sticking to the vision and
maintaining a strong partnership with our client
Schroeder-Manatee Ranch (SMR).
From the beginning, we’ve acted as part of their team.
We share a vision for creating community that is more
about home than houses. By having a master plan
that is flexible and keeping a big-picture view, we’re
helping SMR respond to changing consumer demands
and market fluctuations. Almost 20 years in and the
results speak for themselves. Lakewood Ranch is one
of the top 10 selling communities in the U.S. and the
recipient of numerous awards.
