Heinrich Himmler = Head of the SS Josef Goebbels = Nazi Propaganda Minister Heinrich Himmler Head of the SS Childhood and appearance Born in 1900 to the son of a teacher and did well at school. Himmler was a timid, frail and clumsy man. However, he was a hard worker and an efficient organiser. Although he took overall control of the Holocaust, he fainted at the sight of Jews being killed. Early Career He joined the Army in 1918 but did not fight in WWI. He joined the Nazi party in 1923 and took part in the Munich Putsch of the same year. Role in Nazi Germany 1929 Made head of the SS (Hitler’s private army) 1936 Made head of all police in Nazi Germany, including the Gestapo (the secret police) 1941 Set up the Death’s Head units of the SS that ran the slave labour camps and carried out the mass murder of Jews. Josef Goebbels Nazi Propaganda Minister Childhood and appearance Born in 1897. Was crippled by polio as a child. Goebbels was small, intelligent and very intelligent. He was a very good public speaker—Second only to Hitler. Early Career He was declared medically unfit to fight in WWI. Goebbels joined the Nazi party in 1922. At first he opposed Hitler, but then he supported. Role in Nazi Germany 1928 Put in charge of Nazi Propaganda. He was a brilliant propaganda designer and thinker. 1938 Gave orders for Kristallnacht (attack on Jewish property). 1943 Put in complete control of the Nazi war effort. As defeat loomed he helped organise ‘Total War’, raising morale and help for victims of allied bombing raids.
