THE HISTORY On August 26th, 1965, President Johnson signed Executive Order 11241 making any man married after midnight no longer eligible for a draft deferment by marriage. The only place in the U.S. that a couple could get married without a blood test or waiting period was Nevada. Despite the lack of support surrounding her, Claudia Reott and her boyfriend David decided to marry that night to save him from the draft. The two drove to Las Vegas with David’s friend Michael and Michael’s pregnant girlfriend “Dumb Suzy”. They arrived at the Clark County Courthouse and were the last couple to be married that night. Over one hundred marriage licenses were issued that day in Clark County alone. Beth & Russ - The Film Claudia & David - The True Story THE FILM LOGLINE An ambitious young woman must decide what she is willing to sacrifice should she marry her boyfriend before midnight to save him from the Vietnam War draft due to an executive order signed by President Johnson on August 26th, 1965. SYNOPSIS It’s the summer of 1965 and Bethany Stamper has big dreams… mainly going to school to become a nurse. However, her future is about to change when President Johnson signs an executive order stating that after midnight on August 26, 1965, marriage will no longer be considered a draft deferment from the Vietnam War for able bodied young men. When Beth’s boyfriend Russ proposes to her in fear of being drafted, the butterflies take over and she accepts. They hop in the car with their best friends, leaving their hometown of Orange, California behind as they drive to Las Vegas to marry. However, the closer they get to the altar, Beth realizes that she and Russ have very different ideas of what their future together will look like. With her dreams of going to Stanford to study nursing on the line, Beth realizes the sacrifice she will ultimately have to make should she marry him before the clock strikes twelve. DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT In the spring of 2012, I sat in a lecture hall at the University of Rhode Island discussing the impact of the Vietnam War on young men and women in the U.S. during a class titled “Rebel Images in Film”. As I began researching the movements that influenced many of the films we had watched, I came across the date August 26th, 1965. On this date, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed an executive order that stated that any man married after midnight that night would no longer be able to use marriage as a draft deferment. The only place a couple could get married that quickly in the U.S. was the state of Nevada. Teens and young adults all over the country rushed to get married that night in hopes to save young men from the war. The more I read, the more real the story became to me. I couldn’t help but ask myself, what decision would I have made that night? Would I have married my high school boyfriend? Would I have found a friend to marry and save? And what would my life look like now if I had? After speaking to the journalist who was there that night and a few of the brides I was able to learn about their experiences. Shortly after, I found Claudia Reott, the last bride married in Clark County that night. Inspired by Claudia’s story, I Got You Babe follows a young woman’s journey to marry her boyfriend in Las Vegas before midnight.
