Volume 2, Issue 2 January 12, 2004 Volunteer Opportunites Appomattox With Junior Achievement A Play to World Premiere in Dalton Wes Phinney is his father’s son and as such, describes himself as an unreconstructed southerner. Because of his interest in history, he entered into a Master’s Program of Civil War studies. During his thesis research, he was surprised to find no documentation relating to the reasons why General Robert E. Lee would agree to surrender his army to General Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox. General Lee had fought against outstanding odds using unusual tactics on many occasions during the Civil War conflict usually, despite the advice of trusted aides. This surrender was completely at odds with the facts known about and characteristics attributed to this great general. A witness to the actual surrender described it as an event that contained little or no drama. As an actor, Mr. Phinney was offended by that particular description. After further research and to his surprise, Mr. Phinney eventually attributed the surrender at Appomattox to the honor of three great men. The first man of course, was Robert E. Grant and the third was President Abraham Lincoln. General Lee obviously believed that the just and honorable course of action was to surrender and by that action reunited his army with the Union. General Grant was just as honorable and generous in the terms of surrender he presented. He signed a parole that returned men to their homes and allowed officers to keep their side arms. President Lincoln had set the tone by proclaiming, “Malice towards none.” It was these very acts of generosity that were a first step to rebinding us together as a nation. Mr. Phinney and many others believe that this started the healing process and saved us from becoming another England/Ireland or Vietnam continually beset by acts of aggression, retaliation and strife. Meeting Summary President Ed Donn called the meeting to order. Walter Carter provided the Invocation/Inspiration. Helen Keys announced that member billing was ready and available for pick up at the Sign-In table. After all Committees reports, the Program presentation and questions the meeting adjourned with the Pledge of Allegiance. More Kiwanis Christmas Party Close Ups This Civil War play authored by Wes Phinney was written as a drama in two acts. In the first Act, General Lee is in the parlor waiting for the arrival of General Grant. History tells us that he waited for approximately 30 minutes. The thoughts that might have been in his mind during those 30 minutes will be presented to the audience.
