Lesson 5: India: It’s Different Landforms Lesson Plan Suggested time: 8-9 periods (40 mins each) Content Objectives Tools/Materials Used Introducing the Lesson Methodology • The Northern Mountains • The Northern Plains • The Thar Desert • The Southern Plateaus • The Coastal Plains • The Islands To enable the students to: • recognise the major landforms of India • identify and describe the Himalayan Mountains, the Northern Plains, the SouthernPlateau, the Thar Desert, the Coastal plains and the Islands • mark these landforms on a map of India Timeline 3, physical map of India, a black board and chalk. Use the Let’s begin… as a warm up to introduce the lesson. Ask the students to identify the landforms from the picture given and label them. Teaching the lesson • Describe the size of India and its population. On a world map show students the sizeof countries like Russia, China and Canada. Tell them these countries are larger than India. Then show them India on a map. • On the physical map of India, show students the various landforms in India. • Ask students which mountains separate India from China. Explain to them that the Himalayas are a mountain range. • Show students pictures of the Himalayan range and Mount Everest. On the political map you can also show them the states these mountains pass through. Ask students what they think the climate in such place would be like. How would the people living here need to dress? • On the physical map of India point out the rivers that begin in the Himalayas. • Explain the term terai. Tell students which states of India lie in the terai region. • Explain the term plains. On the political map of India, show the students the Gangetic plains and ask them to tell you the names of some well-known cities in the region. Explain why this region is good for agriculture and why it is thickly populated. Also tell the students about the climate of the region. • Explain the term deserts. On the physical map of India show the desert region of India. Ask students why they think the region is not thickly populated. Show them pictures of a desertand point out the kind of vegetation that grows there. Also explain why camels are used in the desert. • In the Let’s talk… section, discuss in the class what would the children like our country to have-more plains or deserts? • Explain the term plateau. Show them the Deccan plateau region on the map and the rivers that flow through this region. On the political map, point out the states that come under this region. Tell them about the climate and the vegetation of this region. • Tell students what a peninsula is. Show them a map of India. Ask them to name the water bodies that surround India. • Ask the students to mark the sentences as true or false in the Think and answer… section. • On the physical map of India show students the hilly region that lies to the east andwest of the Deccan plateau in India. Tell them these are the ghats. • Explain the term island. On the physical map of India point out the islands that are a part of India. Show them pictures of the Andaman and Nicobar, and Lakshadweep islands. • Explain the term coastal plain. On the physical map of India point out the Eastern Coastal plain and Western coastal plain. Let’s answer… • The teacher can help the students complete Exercises A, B, C, D and E on pages 32-33orally. The children can then be asked to write the answers on their own. Let’s do… • Project Work (F.1) The students are required to write a diary entry as asked in the book. (F.2) The students will collect pictures of each type of landform of our country and paste these pictures on a chart paper.
