4. What is a Solar Storm (threat)

Strong magnetic storm in the sun
Coronal Mass Ejection (CME)
Power grid protected against magnetic storms, we cannot ensure
that the power grid system stays up if a major magnetic storm
occurs (CME).
A magnetic storm may also destroy satellites and disable radio
communication on high frequencies

The FSO, optical communication technology
Uses light propagating in free space to transmit data from point-to-point
(and multipoint) uses low-powered infrared lasers
The FSO technology is useful in military operations where data providing
processes are time-critical
The FSO technology can offer a high-capacity, low power per bit ratio, low
cost and easy deployment
Time saving application offering improved security

The FSO transmission rates are between 10 Mbps and 2.5
Gbps, and rates over 10 Mbps, Wavelength Division
Multiplexing (WDM)
Transmission powers btw 10 to 650 mW.
The wavelength of a transmission signal either 800 nm or
1550 nm
The frequency of the FSO is usually 2.4 GHz
