INTRODUCTION
THE INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC BAND PROGRAM AT ST JOSEPH’S PRIMARY SCHOOL
This brochure is about St Joseph’s Primary School’s instrumental music band program and this
introduction describes how that fits into the range of music opportunities that are available at the
school.
The St Joseph’s Primary School instrumental music band program offers quality teaching on a
diverse range of instruments, especially woodwind, brass and percussion instruments. John
Stefulj, director of the instrumental music band program, is a professional performing and
recording artist with several decades of dedicated teaching experience, providing dynamic and
outstanding teaching to students learning band and orchestral instruments.
There should hopefully be sufficient information accounted for in this brochure to answer your
initial questions and to prompt you about any further queries you might have, so that your family
can make an informed decision about involvement in the instrumental music band program, which
includes a junior music program and a main instrumental music band program.
GENERAL OVERVIEW OF MUSIC AT ST JOSEPH’S PRIMARY SCHOOL
Music lessons at St Joseph’s Primary School are affordable and convenient.
There are three music teachers at the school. Kathy Bianchi is the classroom music teacher and
she conducts the school choir. Tracy Erskine teaches guitar, strings, keyboard and voice at the
school. John Stefulj teaches woodwind, brass and percussion instruments at the school and he
directs the concert bands and other ensembles in the school’s instrumental music band program.
John also offers music theory and musicianship lessons for students wishing to take exams
through the Australian Music Examinations Board (AMEB), Trinity College of Music London (TCL)
or the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM).
Students learning an instrument with John also have the option of taking practical exams if they
wish.
Fees vary for different kinds of instrumental music lessons and this brochure outlines the range
of lesson fees for the instrumental music band program that John takes. This includes the main
instrumental music band program and a junior music program that he has started this year.
Involvement in the bands, ensembles and choir is free.
LESSONS WITH JOHN ARE NOW ALSO OFFERED ON SATURDAYS
Starting this year, John is offering lessons at the school on Saturdays for students who, for
whatever reason, would benefit from Saturday lessons in preference to lessons on school days.
Presently, this is mainly for students doing the main part of the music program, however, it is
possible that some students doing the junior music program with John could have their lesson on
Saturdays instead of Thursdays.
JOHN STEFULJ AND TRACY ERSKINE EACH RUN A JUNIOR MUSIC PROGRAM
Tracy and John each run a junior music program for students in grades 1 to 3, where younger
students can choose to get some experience on a wider range of instruments, taking home a
different instrument each week instead of just focussing on the one instrument.
Students enrolled with Tracy in her junior music program will mainly learn the abovementioned
instruments that Tracy teaches in her main instrumental music program (i.e., guitar, strings,
keyboard and voice), with a little bit of experience on the instruments that John teaches.
Conversely, students enrolled with John in his junior music program will mainly learn the
abovementioned instruments that John teaches in his main instrumental music program (i.e.,
woodwind, brass and percussion instruments), with a little bit of experience on the instruments
that Tracy teaches.
3
PROGRESS AND BENEFITS COMPARISON BETWEEN THE MAIN INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC
BAND PROGRAM AND THE JUNIOR MUSIC PROGRAM THAT JOHN RUNS
There are some differences in progress and benefits when comparing the main part of the
instrumental music band program that John takes with the junior music program part of the
instrumental music band program that he runs.
Naturally, it is unlikely that students in the junior music program would progress as fast on any
particular instrument compared to students who are just learning the one instrument through the
main instrumental music band program, so it is anticipated that junior music program students
would need longer to gain the proficiency needed to join the Friday beginner concert band or the
Monday intermediate concert band, which are conducted by John. Whilst junior music program
students will have a lot of fun with their peers and at home as they play several instruments each
term, most of them will find that they will not progress sufficiently to join either of the concert bands
because they will not become sufficiently acquainted with any of the instruments they encounter
through the junior music program. Of course, any junior music program students who do develop
the proficiency to join the Friday beginner concert band (or even the Monday intermediate concert
band) will certainly be encouraged to attend rehearsals.
The aim of offering a junior music program is to give younger students a sense of enjoying more
variety and a chance to play a broader range of instruments so that they can be better informed,
to help them in choosing which instruments they might prefer to do more with in later terms whilst
in the junior music program and also to encourage them to consider an instrument to focus on
during their later primary years, especially from grade 4 through to grade 6.
THE JUNIOR MUSIC PROGRAM THAT JOHN RUNS IS PART OF THE OVERALL
INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC BAND PROGRAM THAT HE TAKES
The junior music program that John runs is part of the overall instrumental music band program
that he takes. The main part of the instrumental music program that John runs generally involves
students who have chosen to have lessons with him focussing on just one instrument, such as a
woodwind instrument (e.g., flute, clarinet, saxophone) or a brass instrument (e.g., trumpet,
trombone, euphonium), or percussion instruments (unlike the woodwind or brass instruments,
where students play one instrument, percussion students need to learn several types of both
tuned percussion instruments and untuned percussion instruments).
Even though the junior music program that John runs is part of the overall instrumental music
band program that he directs, students doing the junior music program with John are also given
some experience with the instruments that Tracy teaches, so they can gain insight into whether
they would like to be involved further in the main program that Tracy runs or in the junior music
program that she runs.
THE JUNIOR MUSIC PROGRAM WITH JOHN IS ON THURSDAYS
Students enrolled in the junior music program that John runs will have their lessons on Thursdays
at the same time each week. There is also an option to have lessons with John on Saturdays
(see page 3 above for more details about Saturday lessons).
THE MAIN INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC BAND PROGRAM WITH JOHN STEFULJ
For the main part of the instrumental music band program that John runs, all students from grades
2 to 6 can choose to learn a woodwind or a brass instrument or they can choose to learn
percussion instruments. In some instances, students in grade 1 can enrol in the main instrumental
music band program. Because of the nature of percussion instruments, students choosing
percussion would learn both tuned and untuned percussion instruments, whereas students
choosing woodwind or brass would just learn the one instrument that they choose. Lessons for
the main part of the instrumental music program that John runs are usually held during school
hours on a rotating system of lesson times, with grades 2, 3, and 4 on Fridays and grades 5
and 6 on Mondays. There is now also an option to have lessons with John on Saturdays (see
page 3 above for more details about Saturday lessons).
4
THE MAIN INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC BAND PROGRAM WITH JOHN IS ON MONDAYS FOR
GRADES 5 AND 6 AND ON FRIDAYS FOR GRADES 2, 3 AND 4.
Students enrolled for the main part of the instrumental music band program that John takes (not
in the junior music program that he takes) have lessons on Mondays if in grades 5 or 6, and on
Fridays if in grades 2, 3, or 4. Lessons are also on Fridays for any students in grade 1 who are
enrolled in the main part of the instrumental music band program that John takes (not in the junior
music program that he takes). These lessons are timetabled on a rotating basis. So, a lesson at
11:30am on one week might be at 12:10pm the next week and then at 1pm the next week, and
so forth.
STUDENTS AND PARENTS OF STUDENTS LEARNING AN INSTRUMENT AT SCHOOL
WITH TRACY AS WELL AS THOSE LEARNING AN INSTRUMENT PRIVATELY OUTSIDE
THE SCHOOL ARE WELCOME TO CONTACT JOHN TO JOIN THE MONDAY BAND OR THE
FRIDAY BAND
All students learning any instrument are encouraged to contact John about joining the bands that
he runs before school on Mondays and on Fridays. Arrival time is 7:15am to set up and be ready
to start by 7:30am. Rehearsals usually finish by 8:15am, to pack up and put everything away by
8:20am.
Students do not have to be enrolled with John to join.
They could be having lessons with Tracy Erskine at the school or they could be learning privately
outside the school with anyone.
So, students do not have be taking lessons at the school and they do not have to be learning with
John or with Tracy in order to join the bands that John runs before school on Mondays and on
Fridays.
Any parents who have some music experience and an instrument are encouraged to come along
to band rehearsals if they want and are able to attend.
It is free to be involved with the bands that rehearse with John before school on Mondays and on
Fridays.
STUDENTS CAN ENROL IN A MAXIMUM OF TWO INSTUMENTAL MUSIC ACTIVITIES
There are several scenarios where a student might want to be involved in more than one
instrumental music activity at school. These scenarios are described in detail below.
DOING BOTH THE JUNIOR MUSIC PROGRAM AND MAIN BAND PROGRAM WITH JOHN
Students in grades 1 to 3 can also enrol in the main instrumental music band program to focus
on learning just one instrument instead of or as well as doing the junior music program. If a
student wants to do the junior music program and also have lessons that focus on one instrument,
then the main consideration will be whether the student will be able to do that without any adverse
effect on class work. For that reason, John will maintain ongoing consultation with the parents,
class teacher and the principal (Martin Lewis), and the student would need to choose what to stop
and what to continue for the time being if it looks like the student is not able to do both and maintain
school work properly and they find that they are not able to shift at least one of the weekly lessons
with John to Saturdays (see page 3 above for more details about Saturday lessons).
A discount is offered for enrolling a student in the main instrumental music band program that
John runs if the student is also enrolled in the junior music program that he takes.
Similarly, if a student is doing the junior music program with John, then a discount is offered for
any siblings enrolled in the main instrumental music program with John.
5
STUDENTS ARE WELCOME TO ENROL SEPARATELY WITH BOTH JOHN AND TRACY
Students are welcome to enrol with both Tracy and John at the same time, so enrolling to learn
with one teacher does not mean that a student is not allowed to enrol with the other teacher.
However, there are no discounts offered for enrolling a student with both teachers.
So, for example, students in grades 1 through to 3 are welcome to learn guitar with Tracy and do
the junior music program with John, or learn percussion with John and do the junior music
program with Tracy, or do both John’s junior music program and Tracy’s junior music program.
Likewise, students from grades 2 through to 6 can do the main instrumental music program with
John and also do the main program that Tracy runs. So, your child, if between grades 2 and 6,
could perhaps learn violin with Tracy and clarinet with John.
As mentioned, the main consideration in such instances would be whether the student will be able
to do that without any adverse effect on class work. John will maintain ongoing consultation with
the parents, class teacher and the principal (Martin Lewis), and the student would need to choose
what to stop and what to continue for the time being if it looks like the student is not able to do
both and maintain school work properly and is not able to shift weekly lessons with John to
Saturdays (see page 3 above for more details about Saturday lessons).
A STUDENT CAN LEARN 2 INSTRUMENTS WITH JOHN IN THE MAIN INSTRUMENTAL
MUSIC BAND PROGRAM
There are several ways for a student to learn two of the instruments that John teaches in the main
instrumental music band program.
The student could alternate instruments in lessons each week, having a lesson on one instrument
in one week and then have a lesson in the next week on the other instrument, swapping each
week. The lesson fees for that would be the same as if learning one instrument and it would be
considered as one instrumental music activity at school, not two. However, both instruments
would still need to be practised at home each week, of course.
Obviously, students learning both instruments this way would not progress as much as they would
if learning only one instrument or if having lessons on both instruments each week, either in two
shorter individual lessons put together as one longer lesson for both instruments, or, for one or
both instruments, going into a group of 2 or more students at a similar standard who are learning
the same instrument.
If learning both instruments each week with John (not in alternating weeks), to calculate the
weekly lesson fees for the second instrument, halve whatever the lesson fees would normally be
for learning the instrument with him either individually or in a group of two or more, depending on
what arrangement you want to make and the options available at the time for learning the
instrument, and apply any relevant discounts (e.g., “stream 1” enrolment, sibling discounts).
Again, the main consideration will be whether the student will be able to do that without any
adverse effect on class work. For that reason, John will maintain ongoing consultation with the
parents, class teacher and the principal (Martin Lewis), and the student would need to choose
what to stop and what to continue for the time being if it looks like the student is not able to do
both and maintain school work properly and is not able to shift at least one of the weekly lessons
with John to Saturdays (see page 3 above for more details about Saturday lessons).
Learning 2 instruments with John in the main instrumental music program would result in a change
in the one-off establishment fee (see page 16 below for information about the establishment fee).
If hiring both instruments from the school, there would be a discount for the hire of the second
instrument (see page 16 below for instrument hire information).
THE INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC BAND PROGRAM - FUN & HELPS STUDENTS TO EXCEL
The Instrumental Music Band Program is fun and helps to develop the skills and discipline
required to participate in the various ensembles within the School community, which carries
over into other areas of life and assists in activities in later years, such as in high school and
beyond.
6
WHO CAN ENROL?
Students from grades 1, 2 and 3 are welcome to enrol in the junior music program that
John runs.
There are two streams of enrolment available in the main instrumental music band
program with John, which is open to students in grades 2 through to 6. In some cases,
students in grade 1 can enrol.
One stream (“stream 1”) is for students who choose to enrol for
the whole year. Because this enrolment stream requires a fullyear commitment to the program, a discount of $3 per lesson is
offered. Students starting at any point during term 1 or term 2
can choose “stream 1” enrolment. Naturally, at the time of
enrolling, there will be no charge for any weeks that have
already occurred during the term. “Stream 1” enrolment is not
available to students starting in term 3 or term 4.
The other stream (“stream 2”) is for students who enrol for just
the term at the beginning or at some time during the term.
Naturally, at the time of enrolling, there will be no charge for any
weeks that have already occurred during the term.
All students learning an instrument in the instrumental music band program with
John will be required to join the school band when proficient enough.

My greatest passions are playing music and teaching music. I love it. Being a performer, a
composer and a teacher is a simultaneous experience for me. When I am doing any one of those
things, I am doing all of them.
All of my students know that the most important thing about playing music is to always have fun
and that the way to do that is to always play your best, always be humble and always be confident.
As a multi-instrumentalist, producer, composer, researcher, educator and consultant, I have
written, arranged, performed, recorded and taught with artists throughout Australia as a
professional musician and dedicated teacher since the 1980s.
My overseas travels have included an eventful performance, research and professional
development expedition in the United States (New York) and Brazil (Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo
and several other cities), where I explored many avenues towards increasing my enjoyment of
more effective music-making and teaching.
My work continues within and across a variety of contemporary, traditional and indigenous
multi-arts as part of my lifelong commitment to cultural enhancement throughout communities,
including activities in ensembles, recordings, clinics and festivals.
I realise my enthusiasm towards composed and improvised music by blending both approaches
comfortably, which has led me to experiment in many acoustic and electronic mediums,
permitting me the enjoyment of a broadening media base through involvement in a range of
educational, theatre, film, television, radio, street performance, multimedia environments and
other art forms.
Through primary, secondary and tertiary level teaching within organisations and privately, I have
shared my experiences from a broad range of music and associated environments, and similarly,
I find teaching to be integral to my sense of creativity and contribution in performance.
I have worked with students in schools through conducting (orchestras, ensembles, bands,
chamber groups, etc.), teaching many genres (e.g., classical, rock, pop, jazz, funk, country, folk,
blues, traditional, ancient, contemporary, different cultures, experimental music), with students
learning instruments from all families (woodwind, brass, percussion, strings) being active in many
playing environments (schools, workshops, camps, tours, concerts, festivals, charities and so
forth), and adjudicating (examinations, eisteddfods, competitions, etc.).
I have prepared many students who have wanted to undertake examinations (e.g., performance,
theory, musicianship), including those desiring to undertake AMEB and TCL programs.

FOR THE STUDENT …
MY INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC BAND PROGRAM STUDENT
CONTRACT
(PAGE 1)
Dear Student,
Your parent/carer might want to sit with you and help you with this page and the
information on the next page.
These two pages are really meant for students who know what the words mean if
they are doing the main instrumental music program (not the junior band program).
It would be great if you can give me a copy of these two pages and keep a copy for
yourself if you and your parent/carer agree that reading this page and filling in
the spaces will help you to remember to keep going with playing music and learning
with me.
Do not worry if your parent/carer does not want you to fill in the spaces on these
pages. That is alright, too, as long as you know what it is about.
Have fun.
Kind Regards,
John Stefulj
John Stefulj

Student’s name:
I understand that enrolling in this program is voluntary. I have chosen to be a part of
the program. To do it properly, I will remember that the most important thing about
playing music is to have fun. Remembering what is on this page and the next page
will help me to make sure that I have fun on my own at home and at school with others
who play music.
By being in the program, I am a very important member of a team, so I have certain
responsibilities to the other members in the team.
I have either read the instrumental music band program brochure with the help of a

INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC BAND PROGRAM
LESSON INFORMATION
All instrumental music band program lessons during school time are in the second and third
session (i.e., from 11:30am until 1:30pm and from 1:55pm until 2:55pm). There are no
lessons in the first session (from 8:30am until 10:30am) because the school uses that
session for uninterrupted core learning activities, including actions to improve literacy and
numeracy across the school.
Lessons for the junior program with John on Thursdays (open to students in grades 1, 2 and
3) are held at the same time each week for the student groups, as that makes it easier for
students in the younger grades to remember their lesson time. The minimum number of
students per group in the Junior music program is 4.
Weekly lessons for the main instrumental music band program on Mondays (for grades 5
and 6) and on Fridays (for grades 2, 3 and 4, with some grade 1 students in some instances)
are scheduled on a rotating basis so that students do not miss the same class each week.
Every attempt is made to schedule main instrumental music band program lessons each
term so that they don’t clash with class work that parents or teachers have asked not be
missed for certain students (including specialist lessons for all).
Alternative arrangements can be made to have lessons outside of school time, including the
Saturday lessons that have just commenced from 2017. There is also some availability for
lessons after school on Mondays. There is a space on enrolment the form to include such
details. Feel free to make any extra notes on the enrolment form if necessary (see page 9
above for the enrolment form).
If you want to enrol your child in a group lesson with 2 students in the main instrumental
music band program and there is no partner available on the same instrument at a similar
standard, then you will have the option to enrol your child with either a larger group (if
available) for the instrument or you could upgrade to having 20 minute individual lessons. In
case this is applicable to your child, please indicate your preferred type of lesson on the
enrolment form by numbering the boxes in order of preference.
When settled, students will be expected to know when their lesson time is each week and
they will need to bring their instrument and music to each lesson. To progress effectively,
students need to practise regularly and to be punctual and co-operative in their lesson.
LESSON AND REHEARSAL ATTENDANCE
Students are expected to attend all lessons. Students in the Monday and Friday concert
bands need to attend all rehearsals. The main instrumental music band program lessons
are held on Mondays for grades 5 & 6, and on Fridays for the younger grades. The junior
music program lessons are on Thursdays.
Parents will have John’s mobile number (0407321019) and his email address
([email protected]).
If a student is to be absent from a lesson or rehearsal for any reason, whether sickness,
exam or excursion, please use this contact information to notify John directly by email,
SMS text message or phone call (leave a voicemail message if needed), preferably the
day/evening before the lesson/rehearsal or by 7am on the day of the lesson/rehearsal.
This will help to clarify the student’s safety and it will guarantee a makeup lesson when
possible. A makeup lesson cannot be guaranteed if proper notice is not given.
13
IMPORTANT DATES EACH TERM
In each term, the final scheduled lesson day for the main instrumental music band program (i.e., Monday for grades 5/6 and Friday for the
younger grades) and for the junior music program (i.e., Thursday) will be reserved mainly for having a make-up lesson in case all makeup
lessons have not been provided before then. If all lessons for a student are already up to date, then the final lesson will serve as an extra
lesson (at no additional charge). This also applies to students who have lessons on Saturdays. The weekly before-school band rehearsals
will also occur on the final scheduled Mondays and Fridays in the term.
The table below shows important dates for each term. In 2017, the starting dates each term for lessons and rehearsals, in-term dates for no
instrumental music lessons (due to holiday or student-free days or other whole-school activity like a sports carnival), and final dates of paid
lessons and makeup lessons will be:

PAYMENT OF ACCOUNTS
Usually before lessons commence and within seven (7) days of receiving John’s invoice (usually as an email
attachment), lesson fees are paid in full into the account shown on the invoice. Occasionally, paying within
that timeframe might prove difficult. In such instances, just contact John to make a more manageable
arrangement.
No more than 8 lessons will be charged per term, so occasionally it will be possible to have one or maybe
two free lessons during a term.
The option to enrol in “stream 1” (i.e., for the whole year discount scheme) is available for students doing
the main part of the instrumental music band program that John takes. This applies to students starting in
term 1 and continuing from the prior year or for new students enrolling sometime in either term 1 or term 2.
“Stream 1” payment is a “whole of year” payment and usually needs to be made within a week of receiving
the invoices, one for each term (issued simultaneously). The payment covers the time from when the student
starts lessons in term 1 or term 2 until the end of the year. There is no “stream 1” enrolment option for
students starting in terms 3 or 4.
For the “stream 2” option (for students doing the main instrumental music band program with John) and for
the “junior music program”, enrolment relates only to the term, not to the whole year. Students can enrol in
stream 2 or in the junior music program at any time in any term during the year.
When enrolling, fees will only be calculated from the time the student will have the first lesson during the
term, so there will be no charge for any prior weeks.
The enrolment form is above on page 9. It lists the junior band program fee (i.e., $13 per lesson) for
lessons with John. It also shows the basic range of fees for the main part of the instrumental music band
program with John, including the types of discounts available under stream 1 and stream 2. For a more
comprehensive list of fees available under the main instrumental music band program with John, refer to
page 10 above, which shows the full range of lesson fees without discounts and with discounts (for
“stream 1” and “stream 2” enrolment).
WITHDRAWAL
Students enrolled under stream 1 of the main part of the instrumental music band program with John (i.e.,
“stream 1”) will be enrolled for the whole year, and cannot withdraw during the year except on compassionate
grounds or for other significant reasons (e.g. relocation), where refunds or credit can be arranged for
withdrawing early.
A student enrolled under either stream 2 of the main part of the instrumental music band program with John
(i.e., “stream 2”) or in the junior band program with John can withdraw from lessons at the end of a school
term. If a student enrolled under either stream 2 or the junior band program is wishing to withdraw from
lessons in the following term, the parent or carer needs to send a letter (or email) to John Stefulj (Instrumental
Music Band Program Director) before the end of the term, and unless notification of withdrawal is received
before the end of the term, the full fee for the following term will be charged.
As student enrolment is charged on a term basis for both stream 2 and the junior band program with John,
students enrolled in either stream 2 or the junior band program with John need to complete the term and
cannot withdraw from the program during the term.
TERM MATERIALS FEE (JUNIOR MUSIC PROGRAM WITH JOHN)
John charges a very small fee for some basic materials in the junior music program that he takes. Page 17
of the appendix below shows details about this. For the first term that a student is enrolled in the junior
music program, $20 is charged for all materials needed. For each subsequent term in the junior music
program $13 is charged.
15
ESTABLISHMENT FEE (MAIN INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC BAND PROGRAM WITH JOHN)
A one-off fee of $175 will occur for any student first starting to play an instrument in either “stream 1” or “stream 2” of the
main instrumental music band program with John (not the junior music program with John), payable as part of the initial
account. This will cover the supply of general materials needed to do the main instrumental music band program, as well
as special equipment needed to get started, depending on the instrument, including reeds, reed guards, greases, oils,
lubricants, brushes, cloths, music stand, music tutor book, and homework/practice notebook.
A few of those materials (e.g., reeds, greases, oils, lubricants) will occasionally need to be replenished, but that will not
be overly-expensive and can be done either directly with commercial suppliers or through John at cost. Reeds (for clarinet
and saxophone) are the most common item needing replacement regularly. The reeds obtained with the establishment
fee will last for about 1 term.
The one-off establishment fee for learning 2 instruments in the main instrumental music band program with John will be
$275. It is not twice as much because much of what is needed for playing one instrument and doing the instrumental
music program can be used for both instruments.
Pages 17 to 20 of the appendix below clarify what materials are needed for playing the different instruments that are
available to learn at the school in the junior music program with John and in the main instrumental music band program
with John.
REFUND/CREDIT
Apart from the one-off establishment fee (used immediately to pay for materials purchased for lessons), the balance of
your payment for lessons will be kept in the designated account mentioned on the invoice until the lesson has been
delivered. That way, if your child has a substantial reason to miss so many lessons that makeups are not possible (e.g.,
overseas, significant illness/injury preventing playing for several weeks), then options are ensured to either credit that
money to the following term or refund it.
INSTRUMENT HIRE INFORMATION
It is essential that all music students have daily access to their chosen instrument if enrolled in the main instrumental
music band program. A number of instruments are available for hire from St Joseph’s Primary School. These can be hired
from the school each term and the hire fees will be added to your school account. Students continuing from the prior year
should consider getting their own instrument as new students starting at the beginning of the year will be given preference
to hire, so that instruments will only be issued to continuing students at the start of the year if they are available. Hire fees
will be apportioned depending on when new students commence during a term, as follows: $40 (i.e., 100%) if starting
between weeks 1 & 3; $26 (i.e., 65%) if starting between weeks 4 & 6; and $14 (i.e., 35%) if starting after week 6. For
students learning 2 instruments with John in the main instrumental music band program, the instrument hire is not twice
the price. A 50% discount is offered on the hire of the second instrument, and that is also apportioned depending on when
the student starts in the term.
The following instruments are available for hire from the school:
Flute, Clarinet, Alto Clarinet, Bass Clarinet, Soprano Saxophone, Alto Saxophone, Tenor Saxophone, Baritone
Saxophone, Trumpet, Trombone, Euphonium, Percussion kits (snare drum and glockenspiel)
ASSESSMENT
At the end of each semester, John will provide a progress report, which will usually go out with the other semester reports.

APPENDIX:
EXPENSES FOR MATERIALS IN THE INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC BAND PROGRAM
Including term materials fee for junior music program with John, and
one-off establishment fee for main instrumental music band program with John
Junior music program materials fee (upfront costs each term)
For students enrolled in the junior music program with John, the invoice each term will show the lesson fees (i.e., $13 per lesson, with a maximum of 8 lessons charged in a term). The invoice for each
term will also show a fee to cover materials supplied to the student during the term. There will be no charge for some of the materials that students use.
When students first start the junior music program with John, they are supplied some things that they can continue to use in subsequent terms. They will only be charged once for those things.
Anything that a student can only use once during the term will need to be supplied again in subsequent terms.
The total materials fee is $20 for the first term that students start the junior music program with John in 2017.
For students continuing the junior music program with John in subsequent terms (including in the following year), the materials fee is $13 for 2017 and it will not be much more next year.
This is how the materials fees are spent:

Main instrumental music band program one-off establishment fee
There are three (3) types of costs involved in getting materials for a student starting the main instrumental music band program, and the only one that parents need to pay is the establishment fee. The
second type of cost is a partial subsidy. It is needed for all instruments, except flute and it is a contribution that John pays to help get an item if it is not completely covered by the establishment fee.
Parents can pay instead or they can reimburse John at a future time, but that is entirely optional. The third type of cost is a full subsidy. It is needed for percussion and all woodwind instruments, except
flute and clarinet, and it is a contribution that John pays to cover the full cost of any items not covered by the establishment fee, so that students can get the most from their experiences in the program.
Like the partial subsidy, parents can pay instead or they can buy the items from John at a future time, but that is entirely optional.
Establishment fee
For students enrolled in the main part of the instrumental music band program with John under either “stream 1” or “stream 2”, the one-off establishment fee ($175) covers materials that are generally
only able to be used by the same student.
In other words, the establishment fee mainly covers things that are either perishable or can only be reused by the same person if the item has been personalised or used extensively by a student during
the term.
Full subsidy
There are naturally a few things that automatically come with instruments that students are either supplying independently or hiring from the school. However, for some instruments, in addition to what
is normally included with the instrument, John will supply additional materials needed in order to get the most from the instrumental music band program. He will subsidise the full cost of those extra
things, so they will need to be returned to him eventually. There is the option to buy those things from John if eventually desired in the longer-term. John would need to be paid the cost price of any
fully subsidised materials that are lost or broken (apart from normal “wear and tear”).
17
Partial subsidy
Also, for a couple of instruments, there are some things that the establishment fee will not fully cover. In those instances, John will partly subsidise the cost in order to help students get the most from
the instrumental music band program. If a student chooses to play an instrument where this is the case, then there is the option at any point to pay John the portion he subsidised or down the track he
will reimburse the portion paid from the establishment fee towards the item and retain it when the student has finished using it.
One of the instruments incurs an establishment fee that is $10 less than the amount all others are charged.
This is all clarified below, including the establishment fee, and showing full subsidies in a separate list and partial subsidies highlighted in grey as well as in a separate list, so that everything is able to
be properly tracked and accounted for ethically, and it is possible to plan ahead, budget and make relevant decisions by looking at the information about the instruments your child has mentioned.

Note: For items that John has fully subsidised, the student
has the option at any point to buy at cost price.
Otherwise, John keeps and cleans any reusable fully
subsidised items when returned. In due course, he
will give new students the option to use and consider
purchasing either new items or the returned reusable
items used by prior students for a reduced price. The
subsidised provision of such materials is a fairly
recent development to the school’s instrumental
music program, so students presently only have the
option to use new materials.
