Learning Target: 7F – SWBAT simplify complex rational
expressions (complex fractions)
Standard: 7.0* Students add, subtract, multiply,
divide, reduce, and evaluate rational expressions

Terms, Equations, Notes
Complex Fraction:
Fractions in fractions son!
Steps:
1) Simplify both the numerator
and the denominator to single
rational expressions (add or
subtract them)
2) Multiply the numerator by the
reciprocal of the denominator
(this is really just a division
problem!)
3) Simplify if possible
Steps:
1) Factor all numerators and
denominators completely
2) Find LCD of all terms!!!
3) Multiply each term by LCD
4) Simplify
Procedures, Examples

What operations/skills are we using from this
unit when we work with Complex Fractions?
Discuss them with a partner and put them in
order. Make sure you are able to explain how to
perform each skill/explain what is essential for
each concept.

Thinking Deeply.....
Think on your own for 30 seconds. You may refer to your notes, steps and examples. Then I will ask students
to respond to the class.
Write your own complex fraction using just
numbers (no variables) and solve!
The complex number should have both an
adding and a subtracting component (one in the
numerator and one in the denominator)
