April 17 (International Day of Farmer`s Struggles)


Documentary film maker, Morgan Spurlock of
Super Size Me fame, has a lesser known project
called “30 Days.” It's a documentary series for
television where he takes on various issues by living
them out for 30 days. The first episode deals with
the topic of minimum wage. There's a very
revealing moment when he and his wife have to
choose between healthcare and food. Consider
playing the clip where they are faced with that
decision and ask the congregation about how
having to make choices like that may impact your
spiritual lives.

Feeding America and hundreds of food banks all
over the country recently partnered together to
share real stories of hunger. They set out stacks of
paper plates to be used as slates for community
members to write down their stories of food
insecurity. Pick some of your favorites from the link
below and encourage the congregation to respond
to what they read. http://bit.ly/1QtW5GV

Bring an assortment of items (bag of seeds,
hammer, book, jar of pennies, etc). Using some of
the resources included below, share with the kids
how some people don't have enough to eat. Show
them each item one by one asking how they could
use them to help those who are hungry: start a
garden, contribute to Pennies for Hunger, etc.
 A hymn about discipleship: setting captives free, feeding
the hungry, working for justice.
 An invitation to stand in the tradition of sharing “first
fruits” by bringing our best to share with others.
 This hymn underscores the importance of practicing
faith compassionately by both providing for other's
needs and by removing the obstacles that prevent their
needs from being met.
