Stage 1 – Desired Results
Content Standard(s):










The student will (TSW) produce a piece of writing that demonstrates a command of the
conventions of spelling, capitalization, punctuation, grammar, usage, and sentence
structure.
TSW make complex inferences about text and use textual evidence to support
analysis of text.
Rely on context to determine meanings of words and phrases such as |figurative
language, connotation and denotation of words, analogies, idioms, and technical
vocabulary.
TSW evaluate the connection between different points-of-view.
TSW analyze textual context to distinguish between denotative and connotative
meanings of words.
TSW write an analytical essay of sufficient length that includes rhetorical and literary
devices, a thesis statement, effective introductory and concluding paragraphs, and
relevant evidence to defend their thesis.
TSW analyze differences in characters’ moral dilemmas in A Raisin in the Sun.
TSW analyze excerpts from text and evaluate their contribution to the success of the
story’s plot.
TSW analyze relevance of setting and time frame to texts meaning.
TSW connect literature to historical contexts, current events, and his/her own
experiences.

spelling, capitalization, punctuation, grammar usage, and sentence structure.
Analyze plot structure, conflict, characterization, theme, tone, mood, setting, and
historical connection in fiction and non-fiction.
Make inferences regarding the literature read and provide textual evidence to support
their ideas.
Explain how historical context influences the content and meaning of a work.

of a piece of writing.
Draw inferences and support them with text evidence and experience
Rely on context to determine meanings of words and phrases such as |figurative
language, connotation and denotation of words, analogies, idioms, and technical
vocabulary
Interpret the possible influences of the historical context on literary works.
Identify and analyze the effects of diction and figurative language.





