Friday, June 16, 2017
Departs 7 am from Hwy. 172 & GV Park 'n Ride
Start the day with a comfort stop at McDonalds or The End of
the Trail Coffee Shop in Waupun. Then, it's on to the lovely
and quaint Anderson Japanese Gardens, easily the best Japanese Garden in North America. This garden has 12 acres of pristine gardens with surprises around every corner. You will see
winding paths that lead past koi-filled ponds, cascading waterfalls, impeccable landscaping, and handcrafted unique structures. Our adventure continues with another of Rockford's
unique originals, the Tinker Swiss Cottage Museum and Gardens. This Swiss cottage, built in 1865, perches high on a limestone bluff overlooking Kent Creek and is one of only a handful
of Swiss-style homes from the 1800s remaining in the U.S. We
will enjoy a full summer tea luncheon, tour the house and take
in the beautiful grounds surrounding this historic place. Next,
another spot beyond the ordinary is Nicholas Conservatory, a
22,000-square foot conservatory with water features and
sculptures located in the center of fabulous gardens. We will
be treated to Bruce Munro's exhibition. Munro is best known
for large immersive light-based installations and has exhibited
worldwide, including the Guggenheim in New York. We will
then move on to another one-of-a-kind attraction. We will
visit Frank Lloyd Wright's Laurent House, considered one of
Wright's most important works. The Laurent House has its
original furnishings and is beautifully connected to the landscape. It was the only house that Wright designed for a physically-disabled client. Wright personally selected the Laurent
House to be included in a book showcasing 35 of his most significant buildings and called it his "little gem" in Rockford, a
unique architectural treasure. We will make a comfort/dinner
stop on the way home.
