Administrator’s Letter November 11, 2011 Dawn Masko, City Administrator 1. Make a Difference Day Many thanks to our Community Connector volunteers from the 6th CID at Joint Base LewisMcChord! Their crew of volunteers did a fantastic job yesterday and we can’t thank them enough for their efforts. They made a difference in DuPont by painting bollards at Sellers Park, planting the circular flower bed at Clocktower Park, installing shelving at the Community Center, and painted part of the inside of the Community Center. We are fortunate to have these dedicated partners at JBLM. 2. Point Defiance High-Speed Rail Bypass Project The WA State Department of Transportation (WSDOT)has recently developed an Q&A sheet based on questions received from the community regarding this project. The Point Defiance Bypass Project proposes to reroute passenger trains to an existing rail line along the west side of I-5 through south Tacoma, Lakewood, and DuPont. Due to concerns expressed by the City of DuPont and City of Lakewood, WSDOT has been conducting an environmental assessment and recently completed gathering data on noise impacts in several locations adjacent to the bypass rail line. For additional information on this project and to view the Q&A sheet, please visit Point Defiance Bypass Project. 4. Annual Advent Wreath Making Activity Join the DuPont Historical Society on Saturday, November 12th from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM for the Historic Village’s annual Advent Wreath making activity! The Village tradition of making Advent wreaths was begun in the early 1970’s as a way to prepare for the upcoming Christmas season. Villagers and church members gathered together and added fresh greenery to Advent wreath frames, which were later lighted and hung from the lampposts throughout the Village. Today the tradition continues because of dedicated community volunteers. Volunteers should arrive at 10:00 AM at the Public Works Shop (old Fire Station) located at 301 Louivers Avenue in the Historic Village. Bring gloves and hand pruners. The work should be done by 1:00 PM. Coffee and hot cider will be served. Please contact Barb at (253) 229-5810 or Lee at (253) 267-5267 with any questions. 5. All coats will be given to “Caring for Kids” – a non-profit organization that provides services to children in need in the Steilacoom and Clover Park School Districts. The firefighters and Lions thank everyone in advance for donating to this worthy cause. 10. Winter Safety Tips The cold weather winter season is here! The Fire Department would like to remind everyone of some winter safety tips to stay warm during the colder temperatures. Dress appropriately before going outdoors. The air temperature does not have to be below freezing for someone to experience cold emergencies such as hypothermia and frostbite. Wind speed can create dangerously cold conditions even when the temperature is not that low. Most of your body head is lost through your head so wear a hat, preferably one that covers your ears. Wear waterproof, insulated boots to help avoid hypothermia or frostbite by keeping your feet warm and dry and to maintain your footing in the ice and snow. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ City of DuPont 1700 Civic Drive DuPont, Washington 98327 253-964-8121 phone 253-964-3554 fax
