‘Gone to the dogs’ – what does it really mean?
Encore
By Rafiek Mammon
W
e spent last weekend in Durban – and
Durban is another of
those cities in South
Africa that is not what it used to
be. I remember as a child we took
many of our holidays in Durban
with my parents.
My father had some Indian
blood and I think we may even
have had some relatives there.
Mostly he visited with a friend of
his who was also in the soft drink
business, as he was at the time.
We would stay at what was
then the classiest hotel in town
– the five-star Maharani, which is
now known as The North Beach
Southern Sun, I think. Sometimes we’d stay at the three-star
Blue Waters (depending on how
many family members were on
said vacation) and other times
we’d stay at The Elangeni, the
four-star sister of the Maharani.
The point – it used to be one of
the highlights in the yearly (or
two-yearly) calendar for the family. And it was completely safe,
and lovely.
Strange how things change
over the years – not only the
sentiment regarding Durban,
but how Durban physically has
changed. And I know the adage
about change and its necessity
and all but it’s difficult when the
memories you have of anything
– be it a place or a person – are
sullied to such an extent that revisiting said memory is no longer
worth it.
I remember the immediate
Durban connection from the
minute you got off the aircraft
– there’d be that familiar humidity, and a smell to go with
it! Nowadays even that seems to
have disappeared into (no pun
intended) thin air...
Durban’s North Beach area,
and particularly the old Marine
Parade, is being rebuilt as we
speak. In fact much of the renovation has already been completed. It now looks like a mini
Hawaii, and, like most things
these days, very man-made, very
plastic. This year we needed to
do quite a few trips to Durban so
we could ‘monitor’ the progress
– or lack thereof – of the renovations quite carefully. We stayed
on Marine Parade – now known
as O R Tambo Drive – every time
we had business there. And it is
just not the same.
Walking on the promenade
used to be a beautiful experience. Now the hoteliers warn us
every time we leave the hotel to
be mindful of our wallets and
cell phones – even during the
daytime.
And I know this is a general
phenomenon in the country that
crime is everywhere, but this is
Durban – I have sacred childhood memories, remember? Ones
I want so much to relive as an
adult. My parents have passed on,
and it would be great to remember the times we spent together
in Durban, sacrosanctly. Alas, this
is not meant to be – ever, I think,
for Durban and for me.
The saying always goes – the
place has gone to the dogs. I
think I even heard a colleague
say that on one of our trips to
Durban.

I asked him what he meant by
that statement as I have heard
it many times from the mouths
of others. I always thought they
meant it has gone black or Nigerian or some other unsuspecting
African nation – the “dogs”.
Still, I didn’t want to believe I
was working with a racist and his
answer was that Durban did not
look as “Indian” as it did before.
Then he stuttered a bit, saying
what he really means is that the
‘wrong element’ is seen on, and
prowling the streets.
And in a further break down
of that phrase, he went on that
there are petty thieves, drug addicts, prostitutes and gangsters
skulking the streets. Not once
did he say the word “black”. We
left it at that even though I was
not wholly satisfied with his explanation.
I hear that statement from
time to time about places like
Sea Point or the Mowbray/
Rondebosch area. I even hear
that said about our country
sometimes. What exactly does it
mean, I wonder?
