WELCOME TO THE ENGLISH TOOLKIT FOR LATINOS IN FOODSERVICE!
Dear Student,
Welcome to “Workplace English.” You, as a student in this course, have the goal of improving your English so
you can advance in your work responsibilities. Your employer is showing its commitment by investing in you as
an employee. This is also your opportunity to invest in yourself.
This course is different from traditional language classes. The classes are not formal, but very practical. We will
not concentrate on grammar, or on perfect sentences. Instead, from the first class, we will use the English you
need to communicate with customers and other workers so you can do a good job.
As a student, you must take responsibility for your own learning. The number one thing to do is relax! Don’t worry
if you do not understand every word or if pronunciation is difficult. The goal is not perfection, but communication.
Number two, participate. Try to speak, even if your English is not perfect. If you are confused, ask questions. If
you understand only one word, listen again and again until you understand two words! Help the other students.
This is not a competition, but a chance to work together.
Practice, practice, practice! During your free time, watch television in English, or listen to English music. Read
an English magazine or newspaper. Have a conversation in English. Make one hour per day “English only.” If you
practice more, you will become more comfortable speaking English, and your English will improve! With more
English, you will have more opportunities.
The last thing to remember is to have fun!

INTRODUCCIÓN
Bienvenido al curso “Inglés Del Lugar de trabajo.,” Usted, como estudiante en este curso, tiene el objetivo de
mejorar su inglés para que pueda avanzar en sus responsabilidades laborales. Su empleador, está demostrando
su compromiso de invertir en su formación como empleado. Al mismo tiempo, esta es una oportunidad para que
usted invierta en sí mismo.
Este curso se diferencia de otras clases tradicionales de idiomas. Las clases no son formales; son muy prácticas.
No nos vamos a concentrar en la gramática ni en tener oraciones perfectas. En cambio, empezando en la
primera clase, vamos a utilizar el inglés que usted va a necesitar para comunicarse con los clientes y con sus
compañeros de trabajo, lo que le permitirá hacer un gran trabajo.
En su papel de estudiante, usted debe tomar la responsabilidad de su propio aprendizaje. Lo más importante
que debe hacer es relajarse. No se preocupe si no entiende todas las palabras, o si la pronunciación es difícil.
El objetivo no es la perfección sino la comunicación.
En segundo lugar, participe. Esfuércese por hablar, aún si su inglés no es perfecto. Si está confundido, pregunte.
Si sólo entiende una palabra, continúe escuchando cuidadosamente hasta que entienda dos palabras. Ayude a
los otros estudiantes. Esta no es una competencia sino una oportunidad para trabajar como equipo.
En tercer lugar, ¡practique, practique, practique! En su tiempo libre vea televisión o escuche música en inglés.
Lea una revista o un periódico en inglés. Converse en inglés. Dedique una hora del día a “Inglés Únicamente”.
Entre más practique, más tranquilo se sentirá hablando inglés y mejor será su domino del idioma. Entre mayor
inglés entienda, mayores serán sus oportunidades.

BENEFITS OF STARTING AN ENGLISH PROGRAM

Focuses on everyday English and takes the emphasis off of grammar.

Allows learners to use their newly acquired English skills immediately.

Improves recruiting and retention.
This Workplace English Kit includes: a facilitator’s guide, 5 student workbooks, a bilingual quick
reference poster, 2 instructional bilingual CD’s and a vocabulary flashcard deck. HOW EACH CHAPTER IS LAID OUT
While each unit presents new material, the structure is the same in each chapter:
• Section 1 Think About This: Here, learners are introduced to the general concept of the Unit.
• Section 2 Real Words: With the support of the audio CD, learners listen to English translations of
words relevant to the Unit’s topic.
• Section 3 Putting it Together: Following up Section 2, this Section uses the CD to provide
English translations of common and more complex phrases relevant to the Unit’s topic.
• Section 4 In Action: Here, CD support helps the learners grasp the real-world use of the common
words and phrases they’ve already learned by putting them together in complete
dialogues.
• Section 5 Check It: Now that learners have been exposed to the Unit’s vocabulary and its
application, they will review the material through a facilitated activity and Skillbook
exercise.
• Section 6 Practice It: A facilitated activity and Skillbook exercise helps learners practice the
words with their peers and gives you an opportunity to recognize and assist with any
comprehension problems.
• Section 7 Say it Right: A facilitated activity and Skillbook exercise gives learners an chance to
apply what they’ve learned so far using complete sentences with their peers. Listen in to
clarify questions and guide learners to correct pronunciation.
• Section 8 Use It: By now, learners have a firm grasp on the Unit’s concepts. In this section, they
can demonstrate how much they understand by applying the knowledge in a facilitated
activity and Skillbook exercise.
• Section 9 Listen In: Learners continue to apply what they’ve learned by listening to a CD track,
then answering questions about what they heard.
• Section 10 Discuss It: With help from you and their peers, learners are ready to take what they’ve
learned and apply it to their specific environment.
• Everyday English: This informal close to the Unit focuses on material that will help learners
understand concepts such question words, days of the week, weather, and colors.
