If you described Easter with a punctuation mark, rather than using words, which punctuation mark would you choose? It makes you pause, think and listen, but that’s about it. You enjoy watching the kids in your family hunt for Easter eggs; you eat ham at a get together of loved ones, and politely listen to a preacher. But after Easter break you’re right back to your normal routine, without anything really changing. For some, Easter seems more like a period. Looking back on previous holidays, you hoped you would feel excited, but instead it’s felt more like an empty ritual. Rather than sensing anything on the inside, you’ve felt more like somebody looking in from the outside. If the period is your punctuation choice, the disciples could relate that first Easter morning. Jesus was dead. He was buried. Their hopes were shattered. A period was the perfect choice to describe their dreams that had evaporated into thin air. But wait. Now there’s news of an empty tomb. All of a sudden, the period becomes a question mark. Now the disciples are beginning to doubt. Where is Jesus? Did someone steal His body? How did the massive stone that sealed the tomb get rolled uphill? What does all of this mean? As they’re asking all of these questions and more, an angel appears to them and asks a question of his own. “Why do you seek the living One among the dead? He is not here, but He has risen!” With that stunning announcement, everything changes! Forgiveness flows! Hope reignites! Victory is snatched from the clutches of death! And the punctuation mark becomes an emboldened exclamation point! Which punctuation mark are you using this Easter?
