Naming Ternary and Binary Compounds
A) BaBr2
Parent
ions
Ba+2 BrBr-
Barium bromide
B) CaCO3
Parent
Ca+2 CO3-2
ions
Calcium
carbondate
1. Name from left to right. Cations (positive ions) will ALWAYS be named first and THEIR NAMES NEVER CHANGE.
2. Name the anion (negative ion) that comes second but CHANGE the ending of the ion name to "ide" unless it is polyatomic.
3. The name of a polyatomic ion NEVER changes. When more than 2 types of atoms are present in a compound there is a polyatomic ion present.
C) NH4Cl Parent
NH4+ Clions Ammonium chloride
D) MgO
Mg+2 O-2
Magnesium oxide
E) LiNO3
Li+ NO3Lithium nitrate

Name the following compounds:
Why don't any of the names have a roman numeral in them?
1. MgO
magnesium oxide
2. LiNO3
lithium nitrate
3. K2O
potassium oxide
All of the metals in these compounds have 1 oxidation state so a roman numeral is not required.
Mg2+
only
4. KNO3
5. Fr2C2O4
potassium nitrate
francium oxalate
Li+
only
K+
only
6. Be(OH)2
beryllium hydroxide
