Just a few more days and the halls will be filled with students and
staff. August 30th marks the first day of school and the schools
are a buzz in anticipation of the coming school year. Sports practices have begun, the finishing touches of paint are drying on
some of our freshly painted walls, and the staff is preparing for
this week’s professional development days.
Our technology staff has been working diligently throughout the
summer to add 220 Chromebooks, set up Chromebook carts in
classrooms, reset lab computers into Chromeboxes (Neverware
Software), updated all the Wi-Fi routers / switches, updated
computers and added more iPads. We are also migrating email
service from MeritMail to our Google Apps domain.
It was a pleasure to meet Timothy Busfield, actor and director,
who stopped in at Central Office to see me over the summer. He is
working in the area and is interested in sharing his craft with students through various workshops. We hope to hear more of his
ideas in the near future.

One way to help your child succeed in school is to be involved in
their education and to maintain positive communications with
their teachers. I encourage you to reach out to your child’s teacher anytime you have questions or concerns. If you are unsure of
who to contact when you have a question or concern, I suggest
you review the “Chain of Command” included with this newsletter.

TRANSPORTATION UPDATE
The Bath Community Schools
district transportation department
welcomes back all returning
students and extends a special
welcome to any students and
parents newly enrolled in our
school district.
GENERAL INFORMATION
Parents and students can expect bus pick up times to be fairly consistent with last
year’s pick up times. Please be patient the first week of school as we all adapt to
the bus routes. Some bus route adjustments may need to be made during this time
as we work to accommodate approximately 500+ students needing transportation
on a daily basis. Please check with your student occasionally to see if their bus driver has notified them of any route change information. Students are expected to be
at their respective bus stops five minutes before their regularly scheduled pickup
time. If you are new to the school district and need to arrange transportation or
have other questions or concerns, please contact the transportation office through
one of the contact methods listed below:

The Bath BeeHive…a partner in your child’s educational experiences!
The Bath BeeHive is an on-site childcare at Bath Elementary ~ quality care at an affordable
rate right here at your child’s school! The Hive provides the following programs: Latchkey
services (both before and after school) and Preschool (classes for toilet-trained children age
3 to 5 years of age/wrap around care option available).
Latchkey services are provided both before and after school. The BeeHive hours are 7:00
a.m. until 6:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. We are also open for latchkey care on half-days
and most full days out of school (e.g., professional development days). Parents appreciate
the convenience of having their child right here – especially when sports practices are in the
early evening hours! Students have a combination of structured activities along with freedom to make other play choices. Afternoon latchkey students also have snack-time and
homework time – two activities that are very important to the success of all learners!
Preschool is a child’s first impression of their educational future. Our goal is to make this beginning to learning fun and functional! There are three preschool groups to choose from—
two AM classes and one PM class. One AM class meets Monday/Wednesday/Friday, from
9:00 to 11:30, with the other AM class meeting Tuesday/Thursday, from 9:00 to 11:30. Our
PM class meets Monday through Thursday from 12:15 to 3:15. We are currently accepting
toilet-trained children age three through five to join us! (Birthdate of September 1st of enrollment year).
Our preschool wrap around care option offers preschool students the option of care
Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m to 6:00 p.m. for students ages three to five years of
age already enrolled in one of our preschool classes. Please check with Mrs. Brown for
availability.
n
We have a Preschool Parent Orientation on Wednesday, September 7th from 6:30 p.m. until
7:30 p.m. for both AM preschool classes. The PM Preschool Parent Orientation is Thursday,
September 8th from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.! These meetings are for all preschool parents—
new or returning. We will be discussing classroom policies, curriculum, schedules, etc.
While parents are meeting with Mrs. Brown in the library, preschoolers will be having playtime in the BeeHive with our preschool staff. This is a wonderful opportunity for our preschoolers to have a chance to play and get to know each other! Attending the Parent Orientation meeting will also give families another chance to ask questions, drop off enrollment
paperwork, and pay fees.
Please contact Jeannine Brown at 641-6218 or by e-mail at
[email protected] for assistance for any of our programs. The Bath BeeHive accepts childcare assistance from
the Michigan Department of Human Services and services provided by the BeeHive can be claimed on both Federal and
State tax returns.

FREE AND REDUCED-PRICE MEALS AVAILABLE AT BATH COMMUNITY
Bath Community Schools announced its policy for providing free and reduced-price meals for children
served under the National School Lunch and School Breakfast Program. Each school and/or the
Central Office has a copy of the policy, which may be reviewed by any interested party.
Household size and income criteria will be used to determine eligibility for free and reduced-price benefits. Children who are recipients of Michigan’s Family Independence Program, Food Assistance Program, or Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations households automatically qualify for free
meals. Food Stamp/CA families who have not received a Direct Certification letter from Bath Community Schools, prior to the 2016/17 school year, need to complete a free and reduced application. Foster children that are the legal responsibility of a welfare agency or court are also eligible for benefits
regardless of the income of the household with whom they reside.
Parents may access the application for free/reduced meals online at www.LunchApp.com. Paper application forms will also be available upon request in each building office. We encourage you to apply
online through www.LunchApp.com and If you do not have access to a computer, one will be made
available for you to use at the school. The information households provide on the application will be
used for the purpose of determining eligibility and verification of data. Applications may be verified at
any time during the school year by school or other program officials.
All households must list the names of all household members, the amount and source of monthly income received by each household member, and the last four digits of the social security number of the
adult household member who signs the application. If the household member signing does not have a
social security number, he/she must indicate that a social security number is not available. An adult
household member must sign the application.
If a household member becomes unemployed or if the household size increases, the household should
contact the school. Such changes may make the children of the household eligible for benefits if the
household’s income falls at or below the levels shown above. Applications for free or reduced price
meals are accepted at any time during the year. If a doctor has determined that a child has a disability, and the disability would prevent the child from eating the regular school or child care meal, Bath
Community Schools will make any substitution prescribed by a doctor at no extra charge. The doctor’s
statement, including prescribed diet and/or substitution, must be submitted to the Food Service Department at Bath Community Schools.
Under the provisions of the free and reduced-price policy, Cathy Zeeb, Food Service Director, will review
applications and determine eligibility. Parents or guardians dissatisfied with the ruling of the official
may wish to discuss the decision with the determining official on an informal basis. Parents wishing to
make a formal appeal for a hearing may make a request either orally or in writing to: Jake Huffman,
Superintendent, 6175 E. Clark Rd., P.O. Box 310, Bath, Michigan, 48808. Non-discrimination Statement: This explains what to do if you believe you have been treated unfairly. “In accordance with
