WHAT:
Presented by the new Boston Tea Party Ships & Museum, the 1st Annual Boston Tea
Party Junior Fife & Drum Invitational “Tattoo” honors November 29, 1773, an
important historic date leading to the infamous Boston Tea Party. On this date, the
Dartmouth, the first of three Boston-bound vessels arrived into Boston Harbor carrying
British East India Company tea. This tea undersold the colonial market driving out local
business and gave the East India Company a monopoly in America. The arrival of the
Dartmouth would prompt a series of tense town meetings and 20 days later this tea
monopoly coupled with the lack of colonial representation in Parliament, led to the to the
infamous Boston Tea Party on December 16, 1773. The Boston Tea Party was the single
most important event leading to the American Revolution.
A “tattoo” was originally a form of military music, but the practice has evolved into more
elaborate shows involving theatrics and musical performances. The 1st Annual Boston Tea
Party Junior Fife & Drum Invitational Tattoo is a fife and drum competition featuring
junior fife and drum corps. Emceed by legendary Boston radio icon WBZ NewsRadio’s
Jordan Rich and adjudicated by a panel of judges, three fife & drum corps from

South Meeting House to the Boston Tea Party Ships & Museum at the 241st Boston Tea

ABOUT
TATTOOS: A “tattoo” is a military performance of music or display of armed forces in general. The
term comes from the early 17th century Dutch phrase doe den tap toe ("turn off the tap"), a
signal sounded by drummers or trumpeters to instruct innkeepers near military garrisons to
stop serving beer and for soldiers to return to their barracks. The Dutch phrase “tap toe”
became the English word “tattoo.” Over time, “tattoo” became a synonym for the
corresponding music festivals.
