We are fortunate so far in not having the wicked weather of last year! Now that most of the quarter assessments have been completed, we can focus on topics! The kindergarten hallway bulletin boards are filled with snowmen, snow globes, and snowflakes. The Arctic and Antarctic Regions will be explored in the coming weeks. This topic works nicely with our current reading module of Informational Text. We will read many non-fiction stories and write about both the animals and people who live in these regions. Kindergarten will also look forward to several celebrations in February. We will have our Someone Special Social on Feb. 12th and 13th. FIRST GRADE NEWS: January began with some frigid weather. Students were anxious to get outside and release their extra energy. With such a break from school and recess, students needed a review of procedures and rules. In reading, students are working on writing directions, sequencing, and distinguishing between fiction and informational text. Students can continue to work on extending their thinking when they read to include questions such as: How do you think the character is feeling? How do you know the character feels that way? Why do you think that happened? In math, students practiced writing teen numbers in a variety of formats such as picture notation with a ten stick and extra ones (circles) and expanded form (i.e. 13= 10+3). Students then took that essential understanding and applied it to comparing numbers. Students need to be able to add and subtract numbers from 0-18 fluently. Students are learning strategies to help them with their facts. Strategies include Making a 10 , Using Doubles and Doubles +/- 1. Please contact your child’s teacher if you have any questions about these strategies or any other math concepts. Please continue to work with your child on his/her sight words that come home each week along with the spelling pattern for the week. Students should be able to apply these words and patterns within their writing. Page 6 Volume 18 Mosinee Elementary News Issue 7 January, 2015 2ND GRADE NEWS: This January second grade has been busy getting back into the full swing of learning with a blizzard of activities. We have been finishing up our Folktales, Fairytales, and Fantasy reading and writing for our language arts. Now we are ready to learn more about informational text, as we have been learning lots about Dr. Martin King Jr. Students will be choosing a Famous American soon, as they will then be doing some research and writing projects about their Famous American. We always look forward to learning some interesting facts about our Famous Americans, and work on our summary writing skills. Famous Americas are always a super fun learning activity!! We have also continued to work on sharpening our fact fluency skills with addition and subtraction, make sure to be practicing those at home too. On top of all of our exciting learning, we have also taken time during January to do our mid year assessments: SMI, Fontas and Pinnell reading assessment, PALS testing, Words Their Way, and math tests. It has been a very busy month!! Make sure to check out the date your 2nd graders class will be going snowshoeing at the school forest in February! Snowshoeing at the forest is always an exciting adventure! Second graders will also be going to the Grand Theater on March 19 th, to see a Flat Stanly performance. Finally keep on reading!!! Our 2nd grade reading program continues through April, so keep writing down those minutes your child reads at home, so they can be a part of our super cool reward reading celebration. 3RD GRADE NEWS: January is an exciting time in third grade. The students are back from the winter break eager to learn and work. It has been observed that many children are not bringing proper winter gear to school. The children do go outside during these cold winter months and they must be prepared. It makes for a very uncomfortable recess if they do not have snow pants, boots, winter jacket, mittens and hat. As the year is almost half over, many students need to replenish their school supplies. Please ask your child if they need more pencils, glue, notebooks, or erasers. Please be sure that all of these items are labeled with your child’s name. The following students celebrated their January birthdays AND half birthdays with a birthday lunch on January 21: Nicholas R., Olivia C., Francis W., Spencer S., Kyle R., Taylor I., Alyssa H., Angel B., Michael D., Bryn S., Olivia S., Alli C., Mya T., Bryton L., Garrett S., Gaudalupe C., Noah N., Daniel Z. and Parker B. The first graders will be starting with our animal friends unit and the kindergarteners are starting to find books indepently on the shelves instead of using the library tubs. It is a very busy time in the library. Stay warm with a good book! Page 9 Volume 18 Mosinee Elementary News Issue 7 January, 2015 PHYSICAL EDUCATION NEWS FROM MR. MIELKE : Tumbling Around! The students have been playing, dancing, playing instruments and singing songs to help keep warm. This month our composer of the month is Franz Joseph Haydn. The students learned about Haydn and his music, including ‘The Surprise Symphony’. I encourage you to ask your child what the ‘surprise’ is in the symphony and also why his nickname is ‘Papa Haydn’. The 3rd grade students have begun working on the songs for their upcoming concert which will take place on Friday, MARCH 6TH AT 1:30 p.m. in the Creske Center Auditorium. This year the students are learning songs by 7 famous classical composers including: Bach, Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin, Brahms and Tchaikovsky. These happen to be the same composers that we are learning about each month with the rest of the grades as well. More information will be coming home next month about the concert. Please mark your calendars for the concert, we hope to see as many of you there as possible. One other project the 3rd grade students will be working on before their concert is making homemade instruments that will be displayed at their concert.
