WILDFLOWER REPORT

WILDFLOWER REPORT
10 August 2016
WILDFLOWER SEASON HAS BEGUN…….. EACH TIME WE GO EXPLORING WE ARE
FINDING SOMETHING ELSE IN BLOOM. ROADSIDE COLOUR IS NOT YET AT PEAK HOWEVER A FEW
SUNNY DAYS SHOULD SEE THINGS PROGRESS FURTHER…....CURRENTLY FLOWERING ARE
ASSORTED WATTLES, BLUE DAMPIERA, YELLOW HIBERTIA, RED & FLAME GREVILLEAS AND
THRYPTOMENE TO NAME A FEW. BLUE BORONIA IS ALSO OUT NOW AT XANTIPPE TANK.
Mia Moon Reserve – our pick of the bunch! Yellow & white pom pom everlastings are flowering
now, providing a nice coverage. On the right hand side as you come in the entrance are pink candy,
blue fairy & spider orchids just off the track in the bush. Continue into reserve – opposite parking
loop in amongst pincushions are stacks of blue fairy. If you walk around edge of the granite rock
back towards the road there are leek and bee orchids. Further west from Mia Moon on the
Wubin-Gunyidi Rd (few hundred metres) and opposite the Mia Moon school site is another
granite outcrop. In the bush skirting western end of rock are spider & blue fairy orchids, plus sun &
donkey in bud. In the bush on the eastern side are good numbers of blue fairy, snail & spider
orchids. The avid orchid hunter will be rewarded here.
Petrudor Rocks – one of our favourite picnic spots which is looking just gorgeous at the moment
with water in the rock pool. Blue fairy & leek orchids found at the top of the rock 24/7 on the right
hand side in amongst pincushions. Would anticipate there should be spider orchids out soon if not
already, so worth exploring here.
Buntine Rock – Please note the track in is pretty rough, better suited to 4WD/AWD. Some nice little
patches of pink & white everlastings plus pincushions through bush. Blue fairy & ant orchids found
under the bush on the right side of track on the walk up from the clearing. Donkey orchids in bud
around the base of the rock. Stunning views from the top of the rock and some small shrubs also in
flower including scarlet honey myrtle, yellow hibbertia and a little purple pea flower.
Jibberding Reserve - some lovely small patches of pink & white everlastings plus some good size
creamy white pom poms if you drive through the reserve.
Wreath Leschenaultia – There is two small groups of these on the Wubin-East Rd, some in the early
flowering stages and others still in bud. If you head east on this road, cross the intersection with
Rabbit Proof Fence Rd and continue around past the bend there is two small piles of rocks on the
edge of the road near the spots. You have to look down the edges of the embankment to find
them. These are the closest group to town however if you are travelling further north there are
other locations where they are in a more advanced state of flowering.
Some reasonable size wreaths are flowering nicely on Goodlands Rd approximately 20km south of
the Gt Northern Highway end with a lot more small plants yet to flower.
If you are heading towards Paynes Find/Mt Magnet, there is a good group of these plants at
assorted stages, with many in full flower just off the Gt Northern Highway 105km north-east of
Dalwallinu. (Just after the Mt Gibson mine underpass, you turn left onto Wanarra East Rd, which if
you follow all the way west will take you back into Perenjori. As you turn left onto this road it bends
around to a T-junction where you will need to turn right. The flowers begin approx. 5km along,
P.T.O for mud map). This road is used primarily by the large mine trucks so while it has plenty of
verge area please exercise extreme caution and make sure you are parked well off the road and be
careful when crossing the road.
Call into the Morawa & Mullewa Visitor Centres for directions to the wreath leschenaultia further
north.
Refer to Dalwallinu brochures for directions to mentioned locations
