Once the storm abated, we went outside to see if there was any damage.) (Syn. – lessen, dwindle.) altimeter-an instrument that measures how high something is above the ground. arc-a curved line.( Syn.- curve, arch, or bow) banked-to tilt an airplane sideways when turning. coma-a state of deep unconsciousness from which it is very hard to wake up. consuming-use up, to take up the interest or attention of; to destroy by fire. (Syn-absorb, devour, ingest) depress-sadden, discouraged; to cause to sink down to a lower postion. frustration- a feeling of being unable to get anything done. (syn. disappointment) grimacing- having a facial expression usually indicating a negative reaction to something. (disgust or disapproval) (syn.-frown or scowl) hordes- a large, noisy, moving crowd of people or animals. (ex. The hordes of tourists wandered through the streets. ) (syn.- crowd, mob) hurtling- to move suddenly or violently at great speed.( syn.- hustle, scurry) initial- first or at the beginning. (syn.-original, start) intervals- a period of time between events or states; pause. (syn.- gap or interruption) keening-having a very sharp edge or point; to mourn in a loud wailing voice. massive-large, heavy, and solid in structure. (syn.-monumental, substantial) rudder- used for steering, it is a hinged wood or metal plate attached to the back of an airplane, ship, or boat. slewed- to turn, twist, or swing about especially out of a course; veer spasm- a sudden tightening of a muscle that cannot be controlled. (syn. cramp or convulsion) turbulence- irregular atmospheric motion with up and down currents. (ex. The plane was moving violently around in the sky due to turbulence in the air.) muck- soft, moist barnyard manure. Filth, mud, or dark rich soil.
