across the Pacific Northwest lurks a creature that stirs fear in
the bravest of hearts - Bigfoot. (2) Whether you believe the tales as fact or
fiction, the early sightings were the start of an infamous legend.
(3) In the mid-1800's, a man named Baumann and a fellow camper
was camping in the woods. (4) Discovering animal tracks near their
campsite, but discounted them as bear fracks. (5) Toward late afternoon
' Baumann offered to gather the last of their beaver traps while his companion

returned, his eyes fell upon the body of his ftiend, streched beside the frunk

the body was still warm, but the neck was broken, and there were four great

told the whole story. (9) It had not tried to eat the body, but apparently
romped around it in uncouth and ferocious glee, occasionally rolling it over

1) Another frightening incident took place in the mountain range
near Mount Saint Helen, sevenfy-five miles from Portland, Oregon. (12) My
family went there when I was a kid. (13) One day a group of miners saw a
big ape-like creature peering out from behind a tree. (14) One of the miners
fired at it and it toppled over into a deep canyon. (15) That night the miners
found himself under siege. (16) From dusk until dawn the next day, the
creatures pounded on the doors and walls. (17) Rocks were hurled at the
roof. (18) Rocks were hurled at the door. (19) The miners bracing the
heavy door from inside, but the creatures were angry and determined.
(20) The assault ceased only at sunrise. (21) The miners decided to abandon
the site.
(22)Dr. Richard Benson of the University of Idaho is sure there is no
cause for worry. (23) "What the Bigfoot represents is a modern form of
myth, and we are privileged to be able to see it all in the making."
(24) Still, until a Bigfoot- or its bones- is brought in for study, the
mystery of the wiiderness monster will never be solved.
