2014 Annual Report - Girl Scouts of Western Ohio

 2014
Annual Report
Girl Scouting builds girls of
courage, confidence, and character,
who make the world a
better place.
A message from our leadership
Dear Girl Scouts Friends and Supporters, We are excited and honored to have the support of generous donors and
dedicated volunteers who helped us serve more than 42,000 girls in 2014.
Together, we are making a tremendous positive impact on girls in our
community. Girl Scouts opens up opportunities for girls to try new things, learn
valuable skills, and develop as leaders. With friends there to support them, Girl
Scouts have a safe place to feel valued and productive.
During this past year, we’ve had some incredible achievements. We continue to
focus on improving resources and support for our volunteers. In 2014, we
launched a new website with a simplified layout and fresh content. Our emphasis
Roni J. Luckenbill

on continual improvement also led to some exciting new STEM program options
for girls including building robots out of LEGOs, designing environmentally
friendly buildings, and learning how electric circuits work. By offering access to
non-traditional programming for girls, we are empowering them to truly be
anything they want to be.
In 2014, the Girl Scouts Research Institute also published “More Than S’mores:
Successes and Surprises in Girl Scouts’ Outdoor Experiences”. This intriguing
study revealed that Girl Scouts benefit immensely from their time outdoors: they
experience personal growth and empowerment, try new things, overcome fears,
and learn teamwork and leadership skills. Outdoor activities have always been,
and will always be, an integral part of the Girl Scout program. From sleeping in a
cabin, to making new friends, to rock climbing or horseback riding, a whole new
Jody L. Wainscott
Chair world is opened up to them, often for the very first time.
Thank you for your support. Because of you, girls are able to discover their
passions, connect with others, and take action to make our community a better
place.
What is Girl Scouting?
Girl Scout Leadership Experience
Here at Girl Scouts, we’re helping girls find their wow, exposing them to new and exciting adventures,
and inspiring them to make the world a better place. Girl Scouts is much more than camp, cookies,
and crafts. Girls learn valuable skills that last them a lifetime. The Girl Scout Leadership Experience
is our “secret sauce” – the method whereby our amazing volunteers and staff provide activities that
are led by girls in a cooperative and hands-on environment.
The Three Keys to Leadership
Through the Girl Scout Leadership Experience, girls will:



Discover - Find out who they are, what they care about, and what their talents are.
Connect - Collaborate with other people, locally and globally, to make a difference in the world.
Take Action - Do something to make the world a better place.
With the help of more than 12,000 volunteers, Girl Scouts are dreaming bigger than they ever imagined.
All activities are unique— designed by girls and for girls. They follow these foundational principles:



Girl Led - Girls decide skills to learn or activities to participate in.
Cooperative Learning - Girls work together to discuss, debate, discover, practice, and teach.
Learning by Doing - Girls reflect upon activities and use experiences to guide their decisions.
Skill Building
Girl Scouting offers girls valuable skills to last a lifetime!
Girls who participate in our program:
 Lead activities
 Set goals
 Explore different team roles
 Explain their ideas to others
 Learn other perspectives
 Meet community leaders
Girls learn much more than leadership and entrepreneurial skills. Girl Scouts also develop priceless
social-emotional skills that prepare them for success at college, in the workforce, and beyond.
Girls also learn:





Responsible decision making
Interpersonal relationship skills
Social awareness
Self-management
Self-awareness
Girl Scouts is for Girls in Every Grade
Girl Scout Daisy (Grades K–1)
From planting a garden, to putting on a skit, to proudly adding that first pedal to
their vest—a Girl Scout Daisy sparkles with “first time ever” newness. Along the
way, she uses her Daisy exuberance to help others—and they’ll never forget how
that feels. Every Daisy meeting is an adventure filled with giggles, energy, and
excitement.
Girl Scout Brownie (Grades 2–3)
Girl Scout Brownies want to learn new things and show off what they know.
They want to explore the world, meet new people, and do something big that
makes them feel great! From taking their first hike in the great outdoors, to
visiting a science museum, to banding together as a mighty team to sell
cookies—Brownies never forget to use some of the money they earn to help
others.
Girl Scout Junior (Grades 4–5)
Girl Scout Juniors are explorers when they go camping for the first time. They’re CEOs
when they market and sell cookies. They’re scientists when they do energy audits, and go
on nature hikes. They're product designers and writers when they earn their Innovation
and Storytelling badges. Girl Scout Juniors are change makers, big-idea thinkers, and our
future leaders.
Girl Scout Cadette (Grades 6–8)
Making true-blue friends, saving the planet, standing up against stereotypes,
using their team power for the greater good—that’s what being a Girl Scout
Cadette is all about. Cadettes blaze new trails in the wilderness, write and
direct their own movies, take the stage for public speaking, make delicious
meals from around the world, and pick up tools to try out woodworking. Their
curiosity and imagination lead the way as they enjoy all kinds of new
experiences.
Girl Scout Senior and Girl Scout Ambassador (Grades 9–12)
Girl Scout Seniors and Ambassadors are ready to take the world by
storm! They can travel to amazing places like Costa Rica, Japan or
India; explore exciting careers in a variety of fields, from science to
the arts, to education, to the government; take on big projects and
help others in a big way. Of course, they can earn their Gold Award,
(adding that “little something extra” to their college application).
Seniors and Ambassadors are eager to spread their wings—and Girl
Scouts helps them take flight.
Girl Scouting in Action
In addition to a lifetime of memories and skills that will help them succeed along the way, Girl
Scouts also provides countless opportunities to experience adventures most girls never
thought were possible! From giving back to their community through a service project, to
exploring cultures in foreign countries, getting their own nickname at summer camp, and
remembering the Girl Scout Promise and Law, fun and adventure never stops.
Local girl wins National Young Woman of Distinction Award
Camille Borders received the 2014 National Young Woman of
Distinction award at the USA’s 2014 convention in Salt Lake City, Utah
this year!
Camille has been a member of Girl Scouts since 2003. For her
project, she organized “Girls Run the World: Political Activism in
Young Women”. This one day event featured a network of
exceptional political women and stressed the importance of genderbalanced leadership in politics. She is collaborating with local political
groups to recreate the event annually and make a lasting impact upon
the community.
The Young Woman of Distinction award is the highest honor in Girl
Scouting. Qualified applicants must be Girl Scout Gold Award
recipients. To achieve the award, girls commit at least 80 hours to a
specific project over the time span of one to two years. Criterion for the girls’ project include
community involvement outside of the Girl Scout structure, providing an innovative approach,
incorporating project sustainability and taking action to educate and inspire others.
Approximately six percent of Girl Scouts nationwide earn this award.
Way to go Camille! We are so proud of you.
Donors
For more than 100 years, Girl Scouts has proudly encouraged girls to do anything they set their
sights on. With support from our generous donors, we’re able to provide the Girl Scouting
experience to girls everywhere, regardless of their ability to pay.
Imagine what an entire generation of girls can do, if we equip them with the knowledge they
need to succeed? We can’t wait to see what the next 100 years have in store.
Thank you!

Each year, we honor exceptional women who are paving the way for future girl leaders.
Honorees are women of outstanding success who are making significant contributions in five key
areas: emotional and physical health; financial literacy; science, technology, engineering, art and
math; leadership and academic success; and global citizenships.
These women give hope and inspiration to girls through their achievements and passion for our
community.

Family Partnership Campaign
We wish to thank all of the families, troops, and service units who have contributed to the Family
Partnership Campaign. Your generosity is greatly appreciated and is an investment in the lives of
girls in our communities.
Girl Scout Promise and Girl Scout Law
The Girl Scout Law
I will do my best to be
honest and fair,
friendly and helpful,
considerate and caring, courageous and strong, and responsible for what I say and do,
and to
respect myself and others,
respect authority,
use resources wisely,
make the world a better place, and
be a sister to every Girl Scout.
The Girl Scout Promise
On my honor, I will try:
To serve God and my country,
To help people at all times,
And to live by the Girl Scout Law.
The Highest Awards
Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards give girls the chance to do amazing
things while working on an issue they care about. Whether planting a
community garden at their school, inspiring others to eat healthy,
advocating for animal rights, or building a career network that
encourages girls to become scientists and engineers, these girls
inspire us.
The Gold Award is the highest and most prestigious award that Girl
Scouts may earn. Girls who achieve this award must complete at least
80 hours over the course of two years towards their project. It must be
independent of their traditional Girl Scouting pathway, and focus on
innovation and sustainability, as well as educating and inspiring others.
Congratulations to the 2014 Gold Award recipients. Well done girls!
