In this sonnet, Shakespeare asserts the power of words to immortalize his beloved, comparing the endurance of poetry to the decay over time of seemingly solid "gilded monuments" (recall Ozymadias' attempt?)

NOTING THE POWER OF ART
* This 'powerful rime' is a reference to the poem itself
* The speaker is suggesting that art, as opposed to "gilded"
statuary has the power to keep the soul alive through others'
apprehension of it
FORM AND STYLE
* EXPLAINING IRONY
• the lines asserting fire cannot destroy the poem, "the living
record of [her] memory", are ironic
• fire, of course, can indeed literally destroy a written record
• the lines are meant to be understood metaphorically
11
ANALYZING THE SHIFT IN TENSE:
• the last line - may have changed to present tense to show that
the poem is complete and its POWER is functioning in the
PRESENT
• also highlights the ETERNAL PRESENCE of immortality
