Conference: Blue Day 4th and Gold Day 6th
¡Bienvenidos a nuestra clase de español!
Course Description:
Emphasis in my class is on communicating primarily in Spanish through speaking, listening, reading, and writing. You
will study Hispanic culture, geography, and history. You will participate in individual, paired, and group activities as well
as complete written and oral exercises to practice new concepts. You will also carry on conversations with the teacher
and other students, and translate pieces of text. This year the focus on grammar will be more intense, since you will be
learning preterit, imperfect, future, etc. These tenses are more challenging so be prepared! This might sound
impossible but I will give you every tool you need, little by little, to be successful. While you might not think you can do
it, I know you can!
Active class participation is the key for your success in learning Spanish. Learning to embrace your mistakes is the
biggest step toward learning a language. If you have a good attitude and a sense of humor, then you will learn a lot this
year.
Materials:
 1” 3-ring binder

3 dividers

Wide-ruled paper

1 Tissue Box ***

Pen or pencil: any color is fine (Except RED) as long as I can read it when I am grading.

A Spanish-English Dictionary-This is an excellent tool for language learners! Students will be using the
dictionary through the year, plus they still will need it for their future years in Spanish. Wal-Mart currently offers
them for under $4.

Recommended: When we do mini-whiteboard activities I will provide you with black dry-erase markers. You
are not allowed to doodle or waste the ink unless it is your marker and NOT BLACK. I will pick up any black
markers at the end of the activity, assuming that they are mine. You may bring dry-erase markers of any color
besides black and I can distribute them to you as you need them throughout the year.

Expected Behaviors
1. Be prepared, ready to start, and in your seat when the bell rings.
2. When I am speaking you are silent and listening. When you hear my voice as I begin to give instruction, I
expect you to immediately pause your conversation and whatever you are working on in order to give me your
full attention.
3. Respect yourself and others, and school property. Words of hate take away from every student’s freedom to
express him\herself which is key to development in a new language. Any words or comments that would put
down any person’s color, culture, economic status, gender, level of intelligence, nationality, religion, sexual
orientation, or weight, will be regarded as highly offensive.
4. Follow directions when given the first time. Ask for clarification if you are confused.
5. Leave personal conversations, personal grooming/make-up, and eating outside the classroom.
6. Only bottled water and sports drinks will be allowed in the class. No snacks, candies, or food are allowed.
7. Each student is responsible for his/her own learning. All work should be completed independently unless
otherwise notified. The teacher is available to you for any additional help needed. Cheating will result in the
grade of a ZERO and I will contact your guardian.
8. You choose to make a contribution of $15 to the FHS office by having your phone out or on in class, so keep
your electronic devices off and out of sight at all times.
9. Keep your backpacks and purses off your desk and lap, and out of the isle. I recommend keeping them in the
basket underneath your desk.
10. Class participation is required and expected. We will all make countless mistakes but we will work together to
fix them.
Failure to follow the expected behaviors will result in the following consequences:
 Verbal warning
 Detention Hall
 Loss of participation points
 Parent Contact
 Conference between student and teacher
 Referral to the office
Some offenses will result immediately in an office referral.

Tutorials:
I am available before and after school to offer extra help to my students;
 8:20am-8:50am (Tuesday-Friday)
 3:50pm-4:20pm (Monday-Thursday)
Grading Policy:
 Daily work----------------------20%
 Quizzes-------------------------20%
 Participation-------------------30%
 Assessments------------------30%
Grades are available for viewing by you or your parent(s)/guardian(s) at the parent portal. Please allow a reasonable
period of time for the teacher to post grades after each assignment is turned in. It is entirely your responsibility to
keep up with your grades online throughout the six-weeks, although I will periodically hand out progress reports in
class.
Class Work and Homework:
You will be clearly informed when work is due and it will not be accepted for full credit after it is collected. You are
expected to complete all assignments and to manage your time and extracurricular activities in a way that you can
meet all due dates. While some excuses are better than others, I maintain a no-excuses policy with regards to late
work. I accept most assignments at any point within the six-weeks for late credit. Please do not waste class time
explaining why you don’t have your work – just get it done and turned in as soon as possible.
Missing Work:
You are fully responsible for getting your work and turning it in on time whenever you are absent. It does not matter
what the reason is. “You never gave me that because I was gone that day,” is not a valid excuse. It is your
responsibility to check for your assignments and get the work completed according to school policy.
Participation:
Participating in Spanish class is very important for you to be successful and learn the new language. You are in your
second year of Spanish so you will be expected to use Spanish in class as much as possible. You will not be penalized
for incorrect answers, so try not to be shy! A positive attitude, a willingness to learn, and being prepared are the most
important parts of your class participation grade. Answering questions and speaking the Spanish language will help
raise your participation score. Behaviors that lower participation scores are not paying attention or not being on task,
working on materials for other classes during Spanish class, talking while I’m teaching, distracting others, sleeping, not
bringing materials to class, not following the teacher’s directions, and not trying. I will raise the participation score of a
student who regularly exhibits the expected behaviors and lower the grade of a student who is not demonstrating the
expected behaviors. You will receive one cumulative participation grade per week, made up of points from that entire
week.
Attendance and Tardies:
The school’s policies will be strictly followed and enforced. Students are dismissed by the teacher and not by the bell.
Any student who leaves without the teacher’s dismissal will be subject to receive disciplinary action.

Parent/Guardian Cooperation and Involvement:
Your parents should feel free to contact me in person, by email, or by phone with any question about how you are
doing. They can reach me at (806) 866-4440 ext. 411
Conference period: Blue Day 4th and Gold Day 6th
Arrangements can be made for conferences before or after school, depending on the circumstances. I can also be
reached by email at [email protected]
Communication:
Talk to me! If you find yourself struggling with any part of this class or if you are going through something I need to be
sensitive to, I encourage you to find a moment aside to let me know. I am not here to lecture you. I am here to help
YOU learn. The more I know about how you learn best the better I can be as your teacher.
Learning Spanish can be a fun challenge. Take risks, relax, and be patient. The goal of studying
Spanish is to communicate! Don't wait until you speak it perfect. Just start talking and you will
begin to get better and better. You will make mistakes but the more you practice, the more
improvement you’ll see.
