Information about learning in Year 3 The Home/School Partnership Curriculum Newsletter Spring Term 4 2016 We had a fantastic start to the new term by kicking off our new learning theme ‘Heroes’ by taking part in a Greek workshop for our Sensational Start. We had great fun spending the day dressed as Greeks and finding out what life used to be like in ancient Greece. We all enjoyed re-enacting famous Greek myths such as Theseus and the Minotaur and were amazed by seeing Greek props such as helmets, swords. We even had the chance to try some of them on! HEROES This term We will be learning about ‘Heroes’ from history. We will be finding out about famous Greek heroes, Gods and Goddesses. We will learn about the Olympics, including where it first originated, and then compare it to the modern Olympics today. As part of our learning about ancient Greece, we will read a variety of myths and legends in English and write our very own myth. Our sensational start raised lots of questions about life in ancient Greece and we are looking forward to developing our historical enquiry skills. Squidgy! DESIGN TECHNOLOGY ENGLISH We will be looking at the following text to learn about myths so we can write our own. Design and make our own moving pictures to go on the front cover of our own myth Marcia Williams’ Greek Myths / Orchard Book Of Greek Myths by Geraldine Mccaughrean and Emma Chichester Clark systems focusing on levers and linkages Writing Form: To write a myth Understand the features of a myth Plan our own hero and mythical beast and describe their journey and battle with the mythical beast Understand about mechanical Write an effective ending Grammar and Punctuation Use commas for subordinating conjunctions Use adverbials to express time, place and cause Use conjunctions to express time, place and cause. Evaluate our product Apply our skills in measuring Geography Where could it be? Using mapping tools including a globe, atlas and google earth. HEROES Subjects linked to the theme... HISTORY We will be learning about the legacy of the Greek culture and how it has influenced later periods in British history, including the present day. Understand the connections between life in ancient Greece and the present day Devise questions about change, cause, similarity and difference and significance Locate important historical places in Greece. Locate continents, countries and cities. International flags and why they include the colours used. Discover where the Olympics have previously been held and where it will be held this year. MATHS This term we will be looking to master maths in multiplication and division Indoor: We will be continuing to focus on different rolls and balances and how these can be incorporated into different gymnastic routines. We will explore working at different levels and on a variety of apparatus. Outdoor: This term we will focus on improving our aerobic fitness and stamina as part of cross country, working towards the whole school house cross country competition during the last week of term. During these lessons we will explore the effect of pace, breathing and race tactics. Recall facts for the 3x, 4x and 8x tables. PE Answer multiplication questions involving 3 or more numbers e.g. 2 x 5 x3 Solve missing number problems e.g. 80 ÷ ? = 8 = 2 x ? Use the grid method for multiplication Use a number line for division Understand the use of inverse operations to solve MUSIC Solve practical problems To begin to learn simple notes on a tuned percussion instrument, multiplication and division HOMEWORK Mathletics will continue to be set weekly.
