KEY CLUB 3636 WOODVIEW TRACE INDIANAPOLIS, IN 46268 USA 1-800-KIWANIS FAX 1-317-879-0204 Official Newsletter of Crescenta Valley Key Club Division 3 FALCON EDITION Greetings fellow Key Clubbers WELCOME MRS. CELESTE LAU-CHWERIUT The first time I met Señora Chweriut, I was a mousy freshman who was extremely intimidated by the large buildings and even larger seniors at Crescenta Valley High and not entirely sure what I was doing in her first period Spanish 1-2 class either. Chweriut, on the other hand, practically possessed everything but those qualities. With a charming smile, a contagious laugh, and an abundance of happiness that just about radiated off of her, she was the perfect first period teacher any scrawny ninth grader could wish for. However, my gratitude for her extends much beyond that. Not only did her charisma play an important role in shaping my future years at CV for success, but she also happened to be the best Spanish teacher I ever had. One of my favorite things about Chweriut is that she is genuine. There are no office hours when it comes to when she is willing to help a student; and her ability to juggle teaching Spanish, regulating CSF (California Scholarship Federation), and being a wonderful mother to her two daughters while making it clear that each of our understanding of the subject is a priority to her is admirable. I enjoyed her class so much because the Chileannative went through tremendous measures to help us experience the Spanish culture in addition to the language. On several occasions I remember she would bake genuine Spanish pastries and cakes for all her classes to taste. And there were many items she brought items straight from Chile for us to see as well. Although all of my Spanish teachers have been satisfactory and efficient, Chweriut always stood out to me because of the passion she had to teach us everything she knew about her language and culture. By the time I finished freshmen year, the buildings seemed quite cramped, and the seniors were not so daunting anymore. But I had also gained a special friend, who happened to be a vicarious Spanish 1-2 teacher. When I found out later that summer that Chweriut had never taught at CV until that year, my respect for her only deepened. I feel proud to say that she is still a great friend of mine, and am even happier that she continues to teach her passion at our school even now. ~Junior Alina Sarkissian On behalf of the Key Club Officer Board and members, I would like to welcome you to our club. I am so happy that you will be our new advisor and look forward to working with you. California Pizza Kitchen Fundraiser Deukmejian Wilderness Park Clean Up After I signed up to clean up the wilderness, I was quite anxious. I usually don't get along with nature and prefer to stay indoors, at all costs. I woke up early on a Saturday and fought with my GPS in order to arrive on time. As we underwent orientation, we became aware that we were about to embark onto the mountain and uproot large plants, opposed to the "light trail repair" that we had expected. However, as time went on, we recognized the passion driving the naturists around us. Interestingly, the KeyClubbers present united and worked as one. We quickly became comfortable with our surroundings and worked together to dig up as many plants as we could. As we labored in the hot sun, we were content to be in the company of others with the same passion to volunteer and enjoyed what would have, otherwise, been exhausting work. ~Tech Chair Andre Aboulian On Wednesday May 19th Key Club held a fundraiser at the California Pizza Kitchen in Glendale. Personally, I am a fan of California Pizza Kitchen so I was excited to get hours for something I enjoy. I was able to get money for Key Club while spending quality time with my family over a great meal. I also found a way to manipulate the situation for the better by inviting my cousins to join us as well. That way I was able to see the family members I do not normally get a chance to see and I made the bill larger so the Key Club would get a bigger cut from the bill. Its seems to good to be true; serving Key Club while doing no more than enjoying a nice pizza dinner with family. 2 KEY CLUB Crescenta Valley D3 newsletter INTERNATIONAL SERVICE! OFFICER OF THE MONTH Yelling out to her members, helping out the freshmen, and running a club of hundreds of students, Jessica Sin is truly the force that drives our club. She dedicated the most hours to key club during her junior year AND during the AP month. Jessica’s efforts reflect her three years as a dedicated member and an officer contributing to serve our community. I personally have known Jessica since the 8th grade, and even then she was a big sister figure always willing to help somebody out. Her outgoing personality and positive attitude always cheers up those around her. Growing from a member, to a representative, and finally to a president, Jessica Sin clearly demonstrates not only her dedication to Key Club but also to our community. Stretching out beyond our Key Club, Jessica also spends her time working with other organizations such as PAVA and the Academy of Science and Medicine. Not only that, but she also excels in academics and leads a group of cellist as section leader without saving her time for her friends. How she balances such a complicated schedule still baffles my mind. As a friend and a fellow officer of Key Club, I gladly nominate Jessica Sin as the officer of the month for May. JESSICA SIN MEMBER OF THE MONTH Although many Juniors can become overwhelmed by their demanding academic schedules and from studying for APs, SATs, and ACTs, Joyce Lee has always managed to keep everything under control and still remain committed to Key Club and the other activities that she is involved in. Joyce has been a valuable and committed member of our club for the past three years and has donated countless hours of service. This month alone she completed a whopping 25 hours! Everyone was amazed when she brought in 50 cans and over 1,000 can tabs, which she had been collecting all year, and donated them to our club. Despite her busy schedule, she always manages to consistently come to meetings and attend events. Aside from excelling in her five AP classes, Joyce is also on the Track team at our school and devotes countless volunteer hours to her church. Although she has a lot going on, she always makes time to answer my questions and put her Calculus skills to work to help me when I get stuck on my Precalculus homework. Joyce is an incredibly hard-working, smart, kind, and caring person, and I am glad to call her my friend. Congratulations Joyce!
