AP HUMAN GEOGRAPHY/GT GLOBAL STUDIES
Human Geography, as a social science, emphasizes the relevance and relationship of geographic
concepts to human problems. Central themes include globalization, cultural diversity, global forces and local
impacts. Units of study focus on topics ranging from folk and popular culture to urban patterns in the 21st
century. Students will investigate the use of contemporary geographic tools.
The goals for AP Human Geography are based on the five college level goals that are derived from the
National Geography Standards. The goals are for the students to use and think about maps and spatial data,
understand and interpret the implications of associations among phenomena in places, recognize and interpret at
different scales the relationships among patterns and processes, define regions and evaluate the regionalization
process, and characterize and analyze changing interconnections among places.
All students enrolled in this class are required to take either the AP Human Geography
Exam in May and will be responsible for paying the AP exam fee, or the District Exam over Human
Geography. The AP exam is the only one that will allow the students to possibly receive college credit for
geography. Students are advised that the course will require high levels of reading comprehension, analytical
abilities, and writing skills.
Textbooks:

Geography, Upper Saddle River, N.J.: Pearson Education, Inc., 2005

participation. Students can expect to have a Current Events Project each six weeks that will keep them knowing,
understanding, and analyzing regions of the world and what news and/or events are currently affecting that
region.
