Emily Butka read a tribute to Nelson Mandela, who passed away December 5. Mr. Abbott read the
poem “Invictus” by William Ernest Henley, which Mandela recited to other inmates while imprisoned:
Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.
In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.
Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds and shall find me unafraid.
It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate,
I am the captain of my soul.
Y Day today.

raised in both Jewish and Christian traditions but the song is not about religion – rather about being
with friends and family. See Campus Candids for a very brief clip.
Construction Update
Tomorrow construction is essentially complete.
 The sod will be laid in the Quadrangle today but ropes will be installed, to block foot traffic,
until the grass has really set in.
 The tower stairway (between the Commons and Haertter Hall) is open.
 The new conferences rooms (#1 and #2 off the Commons, #3 across from the bookstore and #4
on the second floor of the Commons) are open for business – contact Debbie Drummond to
reserve space.
 The college counseling offices will move to the east end of the Commons this week.
The new spaces were built LEED certified but they also need to be used properly. We are all asked to
observe the following.
 During cold weather, use the vestibule entries to Haertter Hall and the Commons.
 Use the water bottle dispensers and single stream recycling.
 Flush up for minimal water use and down for maximum.
A few other final use notes:
 During the day the performance gym will be closed. Ball players may use the field house courts.
 No balls in the Commons.
 Students should not be in “back of house” of Haertter Hall unless there for classes.
